  • I have the same command, but I use ''Freedom!''. Started as a joke, lol... Now everytime I let her off leash to run around I yell ''Freedooooom!'' and she runs off to play, haha! Always makes people laugh. :)

  • OMG I was just walking my dog and wondering how to let him know that since we are home, he no longer has to walk by my sides. You answered my question as though you were here in my living room. Your dog seemed so normal, not like the "highly trained" dogs other videos use.

  • hey my name is whitney i am 14 years old. i recently got a GSD.. for an early christmas gift. ive always wanted one. she is 4 months old. i am trying to teach her leash walking. not very successful. please any tips would be much appreciated. thanks, whitney.

  • im gettting a baby Pomeranian, ive never seen them on a leash - are they not very active outdoors? and what age shuld i start the leash training?

  • hi my dog is a 8 mo old bull terrier mix

he is okay in walking he will sometimes try to pull

i tryied heel but i think he dosent get it

i need to know a way to get him to understand what in means better same with break!

  • hi what breed is champ

  • @umurcan96 pitbull aka am staff

  • Hi! :)

I have an spirit and lovely rottweiler, 10 months old and 71 pounds! Huge i know ... the thing is that he is a semi-trained dog but i haven't been able to make him walk with the leash properly, he pulls too hard and drag me around the street, so i have stop taking him out because i'm afraid he might run out, hurt me or hurt himself ,so do you recommend me any special technique for him?

I would love to take my dog to the park and be in control of him!

  • @itzamariecole ok. I love rotties. The more u don't take him out, the more hyper he is. I would reccomend using a Gentel leader or prongcollar. I use both for my dog. Works gr8. Another thing, when he pulls, stop walking until he stops, looks at u and there is slack in the leash. Plz reply if this is helpful. oh, and u can talk 2 ur local shelter about what they think would be the best training tool 4 ur dog. hope this is helpful!

  • @itzamariecole mines 11 months and 110. you should have and should still be walking him every day. theres no leash law where i live and mine hasnt been on a leash since he was 6 months its all about positive reinforcement. if you have to, start in your back yard or some where fenced in so you know he wont be able to run off. then dont discipline him for doing bad things but reward him when he does what you want. it wont take long before you notice a difference.

  • can someone help me ugh i have a little pitbull shes about 3 months and im trying to get her to walk on leash but she wont she keeps pulling and trying to get out of the leash and wont walk :(

  • that makes so much sense.

  • Awesome Advice

  • this is very good information. don't let the dog stop you, only you can make the dog stop cause if the dog stop to sniff on the ground, you'll never know if he really has to go or just marking his territory. i didn't know anything about this when i had my dog. now i'm ready to get another dog and learn from my mistakes.

  • Good point.

  • How do you teach the dog to 'break'?

  • i got a Shnauzer he never listens to me when we walk. when he sees another dog he goes ape-shit !!! i try to make him walk by my side and somtimes im succesfull but not always and im getting really frustrated now these days. What should i do???

  • hey, the lil guy tries to listen, it's just that going out is so EXCITING!! be zen dude

  • yeah i know what you mean, i got more control now

  • OMG...I have the same issue with my schnauzer...she is great with all her other commands..but walkin on a leash is a nightmare!!!! tried everything!!

  • Thax

  • My dogs go crazy when another dog approaches us when we are walking. The chichauah does not like other dogs and is getting harder to handle as he gets older. I try turning his head, Tell him no and stop and sometimes that works. Other times he is out of control. How or what can I break him of this when we are out walking?????

  • @Thewaterofthepool and tajuan1998, The problem here is basically the same. The dog doesn't understand that you're the Alpha and that what you say goes. A lot of times, this can be fixed by making the dog sit before you feed, before you put on the leash... before you do anything, really. Also, don't let them run the house. If they misbehave, make them sit, lie down, roll over, etc until they're back to looking to you. Should help immensely.

  • This information is so outdated, it makes me want to cry....or scream!

Try reading some decent information by scientists who actually understand how dogs learn and it is not by you being the ALPHA.....it is by you understanding WHY the dog is reacting in this way......possibly out of frustration or fear.....so you have to habituate the dogs to other dogs in a calm manner and then build up to interaction if possible...check out a bona fide behaviour counsellor...it will be worth the money spent

  • Being married to an animal behavior modification psychologist, I can say with some general authority that this is not as outdated as you think. Perhaps simplified and put in terms people can understand, yes. Perhaps even oversimplified. However, unless you're yelling at your dog, hitting them, not walking them, or standing in one spot for a half hour (which I hope they're not) it probably needs a behavior counselor like I need a hole in my head. AKA, wasted money.

  • AS an actual animal behaviour counsellor , I disagree, however, it is up to the individuals to seek out the best method for their particular problem.

I don't want to get in to a slanging match with you but I would be interested in the latest (i.e. within last 2 years) science behind your (spouse's ) APLHA thoery please?

I hope it is not based on the work conducted by observing wolves in captivity in the last century?

  • Please help!!

I have a 11 month old Samoyed and he just seems to go ape when he´s on the leash... other that that he listens really really good.. he sits, barks, eats, etc on command... its just that one I cant cope with.. please help

    Thank you :)

  • You need to put your dog in a controlled, calm environment to give him a chance to succeed. Alot of owners, who don't have leash-trained dogs, throw their dogs into the big world (full of stimulus and excitement) and expect them to know how to cope. Try walking your dog inside the home, and praising him for not tugging on the leash. When he's confortable and confident with that, move it to the backyard. One step at a time, set your dog up for success!

  • Good idea.

  • thanks for the support i tried it and it worked

  • i got a puppy named polo and he wont leave the yard and when i pull him he be tryin to get out of the collar and my cousin dog marco is da same way and they are brothers

  • lol

  • I have a Jack Russel Terrier and she ALWAYS pulls the leash, she's actually walking ME! I usually take her out with my brothers, so when she notices that someone from the family is ahead of her she runs and pulls until she takes the lead -_- sometimes i stop and say STAY! but she wont hear me D: not even when she's tired, and I can't stop because she chokes herself with the leash DX

  • You should get a harness for him

  • I have a husky that pulls when you walk it. a harness can help out a bit with that?

  • it just helps for his back but be careful on his age get (side by side harness type) no back pain

  • There's no point putting a harness on a dog that pulls. Harnesses were originally designed for tracking and sled pulling purposes. Putting one on a dog that pulls actually encourages the pulling instinct! Try gently (but firmly!) putting your leg in front of her when she tries to zip ahead. Or have her follow a treat in your hand when she's walking where you want her to. You can also try randomly changing directions when you walk so she learns to pay attention to where YOU want to go!

  • hmm she loves treats, so i guess it should work :)

  • I hope things work out for you and your dog!! Don't forget to phase out the treats and replace them with verbal praise when she's got the hang of it. Also, if she does try to pull, just stop moving; in her mind it should be, "When I pull we stop moving forward."

    Best of luck! :-)

  • this is a great tip thnx...and i agree!

  • that is the same wit my doggie! he is a poodle terrior and he acts the same way! try watching some tv shows about the training dogs topic...i was watching a show and my dog is acting alot...calmer!

  • @Thewaterofthepool For starters get a harness that doesn't choke. I use both an Easy Walker and a collar, and attach the leash to both D-rings. That prevents neck injuries. Refuse to pull or be pulled, absolutely, all the time, no exceptions. Turn around and go the other way, or stop and "become a tree." The instant the leash is loose, mark the glorious event with a click or attaboy, and follow up with a treat dropped BY YOUR SIDE. This video shows how: /watch?v=sFgtqgiAKoQ

  • hi my parents think it will be hard to have a puppy is it plz reply thanks

  • Yes, puppys are a lot of work.

  • Having a puppy is very very hard work, a lot of responsibility and pretty expensive too

  • Great video.. My staffie loves to play hide and go seek. I will grab his fav toy and show him that i have hold of it and tell him to stay. i will then hide his toy anywhere in or around our 2 house. When i return hes sitting there all ready to go. then i tell him to "fetch" and he bolts around the house hunting down his toy. He always comes back with it and depending on haow hard ive hidden it.. my nephew loves to play this game with him and he is sometimes the one being hunted.. great fun

  • But how do we teach the dog that once we say BREAK, they are free? And how do we get them to come back to our side again??

  • do not be afed from the dog and try to geve hem a fod and tatsh hes fase

  • Beautiful dog !!!

  • hey my goldenlabs names champ!! :D aha

  • my tibetan mastiff learnt 'sit' in less than 30 seconds! so did my gsd..

  • good video tho

  • Thanks for the video-- great information, and some stuff that I've never heard before.

  • I have a boxer pup that learned sit in 5 minutes, down in 25 mins, stay in a few hours, come in a day or two, roll-over in about a week.

He was 95% housebroke in about two weeks.

There's a lot of things he instinctively knew. We do training sessions 3x a day (20-mins each) and he would do it 24/7 if he could. He lives for it.

We just learned heal, thanks to your vids.

I have Pulmonary Embolism and have seizures so he's learning how to use a life-alert-system.

Your vids are great. Thank you.

  • thanks i am getting a puppy (i might get an adult)

so i will teach it that!!

  • this might sound dumb but adult dogs learn faster than puppies =P

  • but pups have more advantages, more playful, cuter, and not as lazy lol

  • I have a german shepherd =] She is so sweet. She comes when called and sits and lays down on comand. She knows stay and wait and leave and drop it. Absolutley brilliant. And when she grabs my shoe or something she's not supposed to and she sees me she drops it and puts her ears down and looks all guilty =] The only problem she has is walking on a leash. She likes to walk ahead and I constantly have to tell her easy and pop the leash so she walks beside me. She's already gotten much better.

  • Heya, I got a question, I got a 6 month old border collie puppy and my family and I have a number of problems with him. First of all, when he go on walks he doesnt't walk beside me and pulls a lot, also if there are cars nearby he lies down and tries to chase them. Also, sometimes my mom lets him out of the house and he runs around wild, when I try get him he just keeps running from me and doesn't obey anything I say, Yesterday he found another puppy and fought it, then bit the owner. Help.

  • So then they'll be 2 collies bitting people, great advise!

41kahn1 - Maybe you should take him to training classes and then carry out what they tell you consitantly. Sound like you dog is very frustrated, collies need lots of excercise, mentally and physically otherwise they get bored and start chasing cars and doing other dangerous things; you have already seen this started. Teaching basic commands will give him something to think about. Practice sit, stay, heel, etc at home and on your walks.

  • My sister has a collie that is a niightmare half the time. Everytime I go see her I take her out and run for 15 minutes around the neighborhood (after she does her business) and then she is like putty. Collies are used to herding sheep around in circles in a farm field so they are bred to have energy ALL day. My sis' collie loves running and is a totally diff dog afterwards

  • Maybe your dog needs more exercise and play. Border collies have a LOT of energy. I have one and he is a LOT of work. He`s a great dog but high maintence. I walk him 3 times a day (he could easily walk more than that). I also have another dog that wrestles with him throughout the day. I have kids that play with him, and I can hardly pass him without having to play a little ball with him. These dogs require a lot of attention. I also have a supply of toys for him. He loves shaking ropes

  • hey iv got a beagle and she's about 4 years old

whenever i let her off the leash at the park she is fine, until she manages to find a bit of food

and as soon as she does, she is unresponsive and you wont be able to get her back...

    any help?

  • Try taking some of your pet's favorite treats. While she's playing at the park periodically call her to you and give her a treat. If she finds food and ignores you go up to her and lure her away with her favorite treat. When she gets into someting she's not supposed to say NO then give her a treat and say good girl. Hopefully by distracting her with her favorite treats she'll forget all about that other stuff. good luck!

  • ok i have a problem with my dog. he is a miniature schnauzer named Rascal (lives up to his name). when i walk him he chokes himself and tries to pull me, but hes supposed to walk by me or with me right. how do i train him to do so?

  • don't let him keep walking when he pulls. Just stop walking when he pulls, and ignore him until he stops pulling. Or, if he pulls, stop and turn around and walk back the other direction. He will start to understand that when he pulls, it gets the the opposite of what he wants.

  • thank you so much Rascal understands now that when i stop he needs to slow down, it took like 5 hours to teach him that but it got through to him.

    thanks again

  • @aeilenor Exactly. I think for the tougher cases standing still works better than going the other way. You want to reward a loose leash, but if you have a puller and you start pulling in the other direction you'll never get a loose leash to reward.

  • @aeilenor Id say thats making a dog more dominant than you. Right?

  • @aeilenor exactly. i stop walking when my small dog pulls. nicely said.

  • PLEASE HELP my new puppy is really stubborn i take him outside to walk on a leash he either sits there and wont move or walk 2 steps into a yard and goes to sleep then i tell him we dont live here and i pick him up then he insist on getting down then just goes into another yard to sleep please help

  • I think at times the puppy doesn't understand what is going on. I know that mine was very confused by the leash the first few times I used it on her. Just be patient and be encouraging. I just left the leash on my puppy and walked off and eventually she followed with some coaxing. Then the next step I held on the leash and walked as far as i could and waited for her to come. After a bit curiosity got the better of her and she followed me everywhere...my dog is a boxer though.

  • when i got my 12 week old jack russle cross, when eva i put a leash on he went mental! and just refused to go for walks. so what i did is i put the leash on and made him walk around the yard so he could get used to the feel of the leash

  • HELP!!!! My pup Max is a weiner mix and he loves to get into the trash we have tried to break this bad habit he also refuses to potty train what do i do his behavior is effecting my other dogs!!!

  • I would start by posting a text comment to a youtube video about walking a dog on a leash.

  • first thing you have to do when you catch max in the rubbish is to get a newspaper roll and gentley beat max nose with the tip of the news paper roll and say NO firmly and then dont say anything dont talk to max or praise him just scoop him out of the room, now for potty trainig him is to predict when will the dog has to go usually after play or chewing and ten to twenty minutes after eating or drinking or after sleep and with a leash you go out and when max goes you praise him and give him treat

  • that was a response to kribaby 76

  • Actually no I'm sorry. You don't. I'm sorry.

  • cool but how i teach my dog to be free when i say "the word"

  • my basset/beagle mix - put in new harness and wont walk - jsut sits there- wont wlalk with leash on collar either-- soon as u try to walk he jsut plants himself - so frustrating- trying to leave harness on him so he gets used to it but still he wont walk on it? wih he would jsut pull me and I can control that but he jsut sits and wants me to drag him-LOL

  • I am having a big problem with my 2 yr old beagle/lab,I can't get her to walk around the block, she will walk halfway in any direction and then turn around, she is already overweight due to lack of proper exercise.

How can I get her to walk at least a mile for starters? No incidents happened that would have caused her to stop walking straight ahead.

  • how do i get my dog 2 stop going crazy when i grab the leash

  • Through-out the day constantly grab the leash but don't let her out. Right now the leash means outside. If your picking up the leash all the times it doesn't mean that anymore.

  • you can also, get the leash (keep calm). If the dog gets overly excited put it back, and continue doing it until the dog stay calm. then lightly praise and put it on. Your dog will eventually learn that calm behavior is the best way to get good things, aka walk...

  • this vid was added the day after my golden retreiver dies so sad and thanks this really help this video has help me wid my dog i have a hound mix wid boxer he is so funny looking but i love him so much thanx

  • I have a beagle but, even though he is somewhat trained, whenever I take him for a walk, he has to be on a leash or he'll just run away...for good! what can I do to go to the beach and just walk with him without the leash? any clues??

  • I can feel for you. My dogs come back......usually after me yelling for about an hour all stressed out.

  • Beagles are one of those "always on a leash" pets. Their nose commands them by breed. If let off their leash, they will simply get on the trail of something, and they will run until they get themselves lost.

So, enjoy your beagle in your fenced in back yard running free and then put him on a leash to enjoy a nice walk in the park.

  • You should never let your dog off the leash, anywhere. It's dangerous to your dog and others.

  • Dude.... my dog is a hunting dog, a black lab, and i let him off my leash... so don't think that everyone lives in the city, cause I live in the country.

  • Good information...

  • I hate it when my dog makes the decision. I guess you just can't be wishy washy if you want to be the decision maker. I'm still in training myself :)

  • it's worth it, zeke. A trained dog is a free dog. Free dogs go on picnics, to the beach, meet guests who come to your house and do all kinds of things with the family. An untrained, unruly dog gets stuck in the backyard for all their lives.

  • this is true :)

  • @Darthbelal Great comment.

  • @Darthbelal

Yeah, but there's a difference between a good dog and a pre-programmed dog.

  • oh, nevermind ... this is one that did have a dog, sorry! Was watching some others though that's why. They are very helpful though :)
