There pretty cool patterned snakes I saw one a long time ago. I was impressed by its size compared to the garters I was catching as a kid. Back then it was kinda scary cause we were young and dumb and didn't have internet to look it up. I went to the library to figure out its natural geographic habitat.
@remmajekim666 u sure it was a fox snake? fox snakes have very small fangs used to grip prey as they contrict it, i've been bitten by them many times, its barely ever left a mark
the first time i saw one of these guys in the woods it scared the holy crap out of me because i saw its rattle and yes for those who deny it fox snakes have rattles they just very rarely use it
@Songboy1997 me too. I'm in Illinois and never knew we had snakes like this here. I was 17, walking back from the dam at Shabbona Lake Park, starting to dehydrate from the heat, when I almost stepped on one. It made a rattle sound with its tail and hissed...I ran, lol
Why would you want to bother a snake like that. It is terrified of you. These snakes have a great temperament by nature. You had to of turtured it to get it that upset.
No one tortured this snake :-) If you meet enough fox snakes you'll eventually come across a couple that have a lot of spirit like this one. This feisty guy was video'ed for a bit then let go on it's way. Believe me, no one here would EVER hurt a snake.

They don't actually have rattles but when their tail is a blur vibrating in dry brush or grass it both looks and sounds as if they do!

They just rustle their tails in the grass. No Rat Snakes have rattles or venom either.
