  • George Harrison, once spent an evening playing George Formby (1904-1961) records to Bob Dylan, who remained quite baffled and impervious to the Lancashire ukulele virtuosos' charms. Pete York, drummer with Spencer Davis is also a Formby

fan and gives his own eerily accurate immitation of his unique vocal style. George has been described as being 'daft as a brush' a rather unfair assessment in the view of many leading musicologists.

  • incredible accurate imitation of Frombys voice, but agreed the hairstyle is intriguing!

  • I've seen this guy on a website called Splitting Images as a look-alikey. I must admit he looks nothing like George but damn his voice is spot on. If I hadn't seen his face on this vid I'd swear it was the King of Wigan himself.

  • Plays really good, sings badly. ><

  • I couldn't have put it better myself, CidSilverWing...oh well ah did, didn't I ? giggle.

  • What a wonderful impersonation of the great man! Smashing uke playing, great Formby timing&pitch and even the cheeky expressions! Best I've ever heard or seen. You deserve to be known globally for this, that's the truth! More power to you!

  • Falklands82, you are too kind; my having recorded this - after filming a uke-less and unconnected commercial for German TV, about eight years ago.

I knew both George and Beryl, and worshipped George's two quite different off-stage and on-stage personas.

Keep in touch. Google me and I'll tell you more.

  • Wow gerry - that was amazing! George was a wonderful man and you have done nothing but justice to his memory. I was given a ukulele for my birthday 3 weeks ago and I am completely addicted. I've just mastered this song and was looking for some inspiration when i came across your video - and boy, have I been inspired! When I have practiced it a bit more, I might even post a vid of me playing it...

  • nelliejellynoonaa, you *must* get your tribute on You Tube as soon as. George has been my own reason for living, for nearly 60 of my 68 years, and I still love him to bits. Google me, and I will tell you more about the man, and the dynamic lady behind him.

  • Hey Gerry, it's Fred's grandaughter Bethany. Great video!!

  • Thanks dear lass, it's a pleasure to hear from you...and many, many thanks. Gerry.

  • Wow, you could not be more authentic than that...marvellous....George Formby..his 103rd birthday is just coming up...shame he died so young.

  • You're very kind Russell, and comments like that make my humble efforts to impersonate George all the more worthwhile. Bless you mate. Gerry George.

  • Look at *Churchill's World Cup Message* - on You Tube - and you will see me as Winston Churchill (recorded last May, on Paddington), doing my utmost to spur-on the England team, in advance of that disappointing outcome.

I only came across it this evening, so there you are, I've got another You Tube appearance in the Pipe...no pun intended.

Cheers and God Bless You. Gerry.

  • Really Enjoyed your video. Great playing, great impersonator, and a Great Uke!

  • YOU ARE THE ALL-ROUND UKULELE KING, MATTHEW

    Dear Matthew,

Yesterday I watched your several tutorial/entertaining videos, and marvelled at your evident mastery and musical brilliance on the uke; also your generously simplistic and patient style of commmunicating, which is markedly reminiscent of the side of George Formby that I knew and adored.

You are the King on that instrument, Matthew - absolutely out on your own - and so very like George Formby in manner and unaffected charm.

  • Enjoyed this immensely. What is the make and age of your banjo ukulele?

  • Hello Dale77s,

So nice to hear you enjoyed this piece, which I did about eight years ago, at the end of an otherwise unrelated TV commercial shoot called *Life Is Boring Without Music*. My uke - I have about six - is a Jack Abbott Special, which he made for me in 1974, if I remember correctly...and it gets better with every year that passes. giggle. Cheers. Gerry.

  • It looks great. What others do you have in your stable? What banjo uke would you recommend for someone looking with so so skill? Also - more videos of George Formby songs, please!

  • Dale, you are in the land of the finest banjo-ukuleles ever made. The Ludgwig - made pre-war by the Ludwig Drum Company, of Damien Avenue, Chicago -was a favourite with George Formby, and he was lucky enough to own two concert classic models. If you can get such an instrument, do so, and grab it with both hands.

  • I've got four Abbott ukes, Dale, plus a UB Gibson (like George's), and Windsor Whirl. Pre WWII, Gibson made marvellous ukes, and you might get a used one, if you hunt hard enough. Good luck. Gerry.

  • nice 1 son

  • Thanks very much, dear pal. Sincerely, Gerry George.

This was me - relaxing in between filming an unrelated television commercial, in a field near London - about eight years ago. You are very kind.

  • WOW! Realy superb,he is the best George Formby tribute i've seen. I wonder would he be interested in recording for my video archive ?

    Regards

    Jim Clark

See hundreds of unique videos of acoustic musicians and poets under my youtube name of vidlad

  • Dear Jim, I would be delighted to record anything for your archive. This was me, relaxing in between filming an unrelated television commercial, in a field near London, about eight years ago. Cheers. Gerry George.

  • Thanx Gerry,

I just spotted your website and what an amazing man you are I would be honoured to video you,and will try calling you in the next few days.

    Regards

    Jim Clark

  • Thanks Jim, ring me any time, on the numbers posted on either of my websites, and I will be equally honoured and privileged to be filmed by you. Cheers. Gerry.

  • bucktoof pilled up in the middle of nowhere

  • Tombstones too, eh what ? But don't be kidded, dear pal, they are not my own - rather modelled on George Formby's, and I only use them when I'm impersonating the maestro. This is me, about eight years ago, in a field near London, in between shooting an unrelated television commercial. Many thanks. Gerry George.

  • legend

  • You are too kind dear Ricca: I loved the man, the legend, and the really warm and kindhearted fella that dear George Formby actually was. This has been my reason for impersonating him, over 45 of my 68 years.

I'm seen here, having a quick burst on the ukulele during the making of an unrelated television commercial, in a field near London, about eight years ago. Renewed thanks dear friend. Gerry George.

  • That was excellent.

  • Many thanks, Frankie. Gerry George.

  • fantastic well done

  • You are a pal, Guttworms. Much appreciated. Thanks!

    Gerry George.

  • haha wat a legend...awesome

  • Naive, yes - that was George, or was it ? - rather he liked us all to believe that, but really (behind the clown) was a very wonderful and sharp-eyed craftsman, who could not only bash a ukulele like a Strad, but could also act everyone in the business off the stage.

Now he *was* an awesome legend...whereas I am but a shadow, and merely a mediocre albeit devoted follower, by comparison. But thanks, all the same. Gerry George.

  • Hey, thanks ! Gerry George

  • bucktoof

  • Thats so cool.

  • Thanks moktook - that's a cool name, by the way - and it's great to know also, that cool guys like you, like dear George Formby, who got us through the Depression and the subsequent World War, with his infectious chuckle, his uke, his cheeky songs, and his genuine warmhearted love of everyone, rich or poor, young or old, everywhere. Gerry George.

  • very good 100%

  • Many, many thanks, Porkpieman7. George was my reason for living, for many years, and I have been impersonating him for more than 50 of my 68 years on earth. This little bit of fun was shot during the filming of an unrelated commercial, in a field on the outskirts of London, about eight years ago, when both the crew and me, had a great deal of fun, and concluded that everything had in the words of Formby:

*Turned Out Nice Again*. Cheers. Gerry George.

  • Cool

  • Best George Formby on you tube. EXCELLENT!!!

  • Dear Stiggpots, you make me blush; my impersonation being mainly that of the man, rather than the instrumentalist...because there are many better uke players than me, although none quite so good as George, who was a *one-off* to say the least. Cheers and many, many thanks. Gerry.

  • Don't be so modest. :o)

  • that was very good! reaaly!! i want to be related to this guy!

  • You are, EDickinson: welcome to the Formby Family !

    Every good wish. Gerry George.

  • 10 out of 10

  • *It's In The Air* comes to mind with your kind and generous posting, Autopilotflight. Thanks very much, and keep in touch. Cheers. Gerry.

  • Great!!! Very talented.You captured George wonderfully!!!Thank-you

  • Many thanks for ths EddieMemphis; your kind words meaning everything to me. I loved the man, in that he was all that, and more of his screen persona. Cheers. Gerry.

  • Totally agree but what do expect from a Pro
