Buck would have never made it big had it not been for the musical genius of Don Rich and there's some who say the ungrateful sonofabitch never deserved him. Perhaps the most unlikeable man in all of C & W--Buck Owens. Sure love to see Don's superlative licks though!
Miss you both Buck and Don. Buck was never the same after the tragic motorcycle accident that took the life of his musical soulmate. I'm so glad to see this performance on here.
Don Rich's playing is what good country picking is all about! Don really made the "whole sound" shine with his Telecaster and harmony vocals. Any idea who the (heard but not seen) piano player is?
Buck Owens went through a severe depression when his best friend and band mate Don Rich died from a motorcycle crash. Today's country doesn't even come close to having the talent that Buck Owens and the Buckaroos had. Thanks for posting!
I love the story behind this song... The guys who wrote it were driving along, wanting to write a new song, and they kept passing Exxon stations, who had tigers on their signs, so they used that as the basis of the song. I think it's funny how such a huge hit could come from seeing too many Exxon stations... Lol, I love this son!!!!!!!!! :D
Wow -- 1969? That was the year we married, and the moon landing occurred-during our honeymoon. Amazing...brings back memories. I wasn't into country back then, but I do remember seeing/hearing this...probably cause of my Dad watching Hee Haw. What a hoot! (as in "hootenanny")
This takes me back to being a kid growing up on the farm and my mother had the old radio playing in the farm house and this song was high on the charts
DANGEROUS Don Rich!

Buck seems to back off on the 'twang' of earlier versions of this song. That's the best part! (even if it is corny!)

Buck and the boys would come in at one 90 minute or so session and record a season's worth of songs for the shows, according to the show's producers.

Right on!! Don is all over that Telecaster in this one!! I like the original bass guitar line over this one, though.
But, you just can't beat Don Rich and Buck Owens together!! Today's country doesn't even come close.
