If you want to really learn bunkai and your instructor only teaches "basics" then get out and train in other martial arts (as the okinawan masters did) then your bunkai knowledge will explode. I recommend Silat, escrima, southern white crane to name a few. I comment from over 30 years experience in martial arts and since the early 90s have learned more about karate training in other systems than the previous 20 or so years training with japanese and english instructors.
Let's qualify that though. If you are a black belt, and have only been taught basic bunkai, then yes, certainly look elsewhere. But if you are kyu rank, that's not so true.
He is only showing one side to the Bunkai...There are many different bunkai, and sometimes its best to show the basic's, and let you figure out the true Bunkai, or maybe it's you'r not ready to learn yet. Look deeper and don't be so jaded...it's a science my friends.
Perhaps it would be simpler to say that these are very, very basic. Nothing advanced, but nothing wrong with a particular application if it works and you stay within the kata structure. But it really is just showing super basic block-punch type moves. Naihanchi contains so much more.
Thanks, I will do that. Thank you as well for posting the vids. IMO there are not enough Isshinryu vids out there. It's nice to know that you help fill that void.
Not quite sure what you mean. Weak definition, weak opponent, weak attack by opponent? Derogatory comments are easy. It'd be nice if you provided a little more insight to your meaning.

Just out of curiousity though, why do you name those arts for learning bunkai?

Good kihon bunkai.... Todays' oyo bunkais are too much complicated and there's no kata in that. This is a good kihon bunkai from Sensei Uezu

Nothing derogatory about it. Just there needs to be more "spirit" more... "LIfe to realism"

Ah. I see. Well, it is ONE explanation of the movements. For a stronger spirit, watch him do the kata itself. Thanks.
