  • Wow! She was SO beautiful AND talented! May she rest in peace.

  • Without a doubt Phyllis Hyman performed and sang this solo like Ella Fitzerald. They both are legend and dearly miss.

  • One of pop , jazz and R&B music's most classy Ladies.Beauty talent, brains,Phyllis had a way with a song that was just different from how anyone else sang. In an era of exceptional singers she rose like cream to the top. I still grieve her death.

  • her voice is so beautiful. R.I.P. P. Hyman. This is what u call voice control, something that a lot of artist today lack.

  • It just doesn't get any GREATER!

  • she looks stunning! just beautiful! Lord... such a sad ending!

  • she is my favorite singer

  • I have been a fan of Phyllis Hyman's for most of my Adult life. Candles, A glass of wine, and Phyllis playing in the back ground, this Diva can set a mood like no one else. I was introduced to her by someone I hold very dear in my memories and I cherish them both.

  • Revisiting the great Phyllis Hyman this week. Absolutely timeless and classic work of art, Phyllis as well as the song! Coffee, croissants and Phyllis . . .

  • What a talent! The world lost a treasure when she passed.

  • rose petals seem to fall ...... etc

I see her fav singer Nancy Wilson influence. what a talent !!

  • Like this if you think she and Jazmine sullivan look a like! :o)

  • Lady Phyllis is my favorite female artist. I feel every song she sings. I understand how lonely is was. Im the same way. I wish she could have found true love she would still be here with us. She is missed......... I love you girl..........

  • OHH MY GOD!!! PHYLLIS WAS SO DRAMATIC AND PASSIONATE BUT I FORGOT !!! She had to have FELT this SONG IN HER HEART!!! DUKE had all the Jazz Divas lining up to sing THIS SONG including ELLA, SARAH AND DINAH WASHINGTON...but PHYLLIS MADE THIS SONG HERS'!!! NO ONE has sung it More DRAMATIC and PASSIONATE THAN THIS!!! I LOVE YOU PHYLLIS AND I WILL ALWAYS MISS YOU!!! R.I.P. SISTER! YOU DID YOUR WORK ON EARTH NOW DO IT ON THE OTHER SIDE TOO!

  • I love love love this song, but I could feel the pain. I don't think it was meant to be painful be I felt it. What a gift. What a beautiful Jewel. R.I.P Ms. Hyman

  • She was so beautiful, but her life was so tragic, everytime I see her I think Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway for some reason.

  • Just stunning!

  • I'm honored to have witnessed this !! Thank you so much!!..She is still a gift to us !!! Master class of the highest level !!!!!

  • WOW, DIVA!

  • An absolutely powerful performance. She sang this classic song to perfection. She had beauty, exceptional talent, God given vocal chords and sang every song with heartfelt passion Her special talent left us way too early but she did leave wonderful music that will live on.

  • Gone but NEVER forgotten! The tone of her voice was so rich. Wish she was here today to teach these wannabe singers how it's done.

  • Style and talent! Classic.

  • Perfect

  • REGAL!

  • Pass me a shot a whiskey or a glass of jack daniels nd tha rest is history nd put on the phyliss hyman or nancy wilson nd i be good any day.... classics juss never grow old

  • So much emotion in her performance ...Quite mooving . Its like shes acting aswel as singing .

  • Pretty lady ...

  • Nice one . Shee put so much feeling into the song. I felt it through my computer screen...

  • BRAVO

  • Breath taking is the only thing that comes to mind!!!

  • Beautiful in every way! Wonderful

  • She was wonderful, and like all of us just human, with her problems, happiness, and sad times, yes she sufferred from a DISEASE, so please don't villify this woman, or focus on how she died, celebrate her life and memory, be kind, as she was very kind.

  • I get so mad when I see Phyllis b/c she was/is so BEAUTIFUL! Gee! Just makes me angry! But mental illness is something serious. In the African Amer community it is kind of shunned upon for whatever reason....dang Phyllis! Why? :-(

  • Still love it!!!!!! thanks for posting!

  • This is only woman in the world for me... I even prayed for her to be my wife..and to have our beautiful children with. but hey! it was not to be.. I was only 16 give me a break..but now I'm 46 and I am still in love with you Miss Phyllis Hyman...AS the Late great Luther Vandross once said...Forever, for Always, for Love..

  • The only woman in the world I prayed for to be my wife...hey! I was only 16 give me a break..lol

  • Wow! shut down my current petty disposition. Her voice her presence fills me with such vunerable need . I feel devinely human and wanting in a devinely, unpretenious way. I get how cliche it is for a black gay man to connect/feel about a performer like Phyllis, that aside, I also miss how I would randomly meet a guy and we'd connect through her music. ....first. Those type of connections today are rare....and I desperatrely miss them both.

    Mr.Funky

  • Oh my God..her immense talent and gifts were eclipsed only by her beauty..inside and out..Allah if it be thy will...b please with beloved sister Phyllis...

  • R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman. Beauty, style, class, and that MAGNIFICENT voice... Oh, my God... what a gem we lost...

  • Comment removed

  • What a gorgeous woman with such a rich voice...Gosh the world truly lost a one of kind talent!

  • Man, this woman is fcking gorgeous.

  • Phyllis was sooooooooooooooooo smooth....a superb talent,

  • SHE IS A TRUE DIVIA !

  • It's a ashame that she is gone. She was so beautiful!

  • I MISS YOU PHYLLIS!!

  • she kinda look like Selena Quintanilla from far!!!!!!!!!

  • I love Phyllis. Beyonce is not playing Phyllis Hyman. That is completely false so i won't even attempt to get upset by that comment. lol. I dnt even think they are making a movie about her but if they do they need to get an undiscovered actress. Theres other faces that need to be seen and im tired of seeing the same played out, tired singers playing these great artists. Phyllis was special and we dnt need a known artist taking anything away from her.

  • As I watch Miss Hyman sing.. I am reminded of the time when "great singers" truly felt the words they sang. Go back and look at some of the best female singers and you will see just what TALENT! is. Billie,Sarah,Ella.. The look of pain and joy on their faces. They were will to open wounds and their hearts to give you a glimpse of themselves. I have everything this great lady sang.. and I will cherish her, for allowing us see who she was through her music.

  • What an outstanding performance. Such a beautiful talent gone way too soon! RIP Phyllis!

  • What an outstanding performance. Such a beautiful talent gone way too soon! RIP Phyllis!

  • i love how when she starts singin i feel like im listening to a singer in the cotton club waaaaaay back in the day lol

  • This was the first Broadway show I had ever seen and her performance still takes a huge place in my memory bank. I remember how in awe I was of her naturalness, her beauty, her flow, her Her!!!!!!!!!

  • hauntingly beautifully sung

  • She was sooo Beautiful so was her singing voice ! You understood how she felt every song .

  • We love you Sophisticated lady! Phyllis had so much class that no one can touch today. We miss u!

  • Such great talent, I miss her even still today.

  • why is it the great ones die young???

  • Jazmine Sullivan kinda looks like Phyllis Hyman, don't you think? Oh, and I heard that Beyonce was supposed to play here in a biopic...but I think Jazmine Sullivan should do it because she looks more like her than Beyonce and could mold her voice better to Ms.Hyman's style.

  • @yemonja100 I'd rather see Chrisette Michele play Phyllis in a biopic. Chrisette Michele can do really good vocal impressions, and has a great understanding and apreciation of jazz.

  • if only they had youtube when i was a kid i would bask in all this, she was so pretty and talented, she leaves parts off her soul on stage

  • Phyllis Hyman is the ONLY singer who can perform a classic by Duke Ellington. You even think about gettin someone else your only fooling yourself.

  • u can hear that TONI BRAXTON is highly influeneced by PHYLLIS HYMAN and KELIS is highly influenecd by Toni it's amazing to see where things begin

  • B R E A T H T A K I N G . . . . .

  • she was bad

  • luv every note your at home now ucan sing for him he needed ur voice

  • STOP......just enjoy the talent of this woman they both stand alone with their accomplishments

  • WoW!...RIP Phyllis!

  • BRAVO!

  • 3:05 till the end LORD HAVE MERCY PH! GIVE ME MY LIFE I LIVE FOR YOUR RIFFS!!!!!!

  • Diana Ross had never that class!

  • Who cares she sings wayyy better than Diana.

  • @TheCmelmoneyman I agree. Diana was not more talented than Phyllis at all. Diana Ross slept her way to the top because she was dating Berry Gordy, and HE is the reason she got to where she is. She didn't make it on her own merit. Phyllis was and is great. She just had some problems and needed help. Things were different back then, and she may not have known how to handle her problems.

  • @TheCmelmoneyman and looks wayyyyy better too.

  • @MaxMikeLatino please do!

  • You're a trashy piece of shit. Why are Diana Ross fans so obnoxious in every place they go?

  • Listen Max...

Phyllis had a mental illness, that is the reason she take her life. Man, you do your homework before you make lame comments. Plus, I don't even think of Diana Ross when Phyllis steps out on stage.

  • I know she had mental heath issues! But in that outfit in this clip she did something Miss Ross did three years earlier.

  • @MaxMikeLatino Isn't this for a show? You know Phyllis didn't dress like this! I mean, if you're really a Phyllis fan, you do. She was farrrrrrr more extravagant. At least that's how I remember her.

  • This is from the Musical "Sophisticated Ladies". The Video is out there somewhere and it is incredible.

  • @Rmasai Or anyone else for that matter. I don't know why she commited sucide. She had a mental illness, but who really knows what the cause was. One thing is certain. Very few could go with her vocally. Then AND now.

  • Phyllis tried to take her life several times, it was definitely caused by her mental illness. Her mental illness and suicide is discussed is detail in her autobiography, "Strength of a Woman: The Phyllis Hyman Story".

  • @dtrim84 Phyllis suffered from chronic depression among other things & she didn't like how the medications prescribed for her made her feel. The VH1 program "Unsung" did a documentary 45 minute segment on her which tries to explain all the things going on in her life leading up to the suicide. It's here on YouTube. It's a beautiful & yet truly sad story of the end of a Dynamitely Awesome career.

  • @dtrim84 she was bipolar and she felt she couldn't find true love

  • @dtrim84 You are right "VERY FEW COULD GO WITH HER VOCALLY." Her voice is so dark, rich and smooth. She's one of those singers that you will never get tired of listening too. You can get you a cup of coffee (or wine) and put Phyllis on and just sit back, relax, breath, think happy thoughts. There are soulful singers out there but none compare. GONE TOO SOON.

  • @dtrim84 Well, there have been several speculations---one being she suffered from depression and an accumulation of personal and professional issues, one being that her record labeled dropped and sign Whit Houston after she was told they would make her the next Diana Ross.

  • @Rmasai Agree..She had a serious mental illness..bipolar. That IS why she took her life and anyone who doubts that's the reason need to read about her a few times

  • @Rmasai Amen Rmasai! Thanks for the comment.

  • @MaxMikeLatino Hyman is better than Ex-Diva Ross.

  • @MaxMikeLatino max...smh. that right there is a great,

  • @MaxMikeLatino Go have your ears & eyes checked...

  • @MaxMikeLatino thumbs allll the way down!

  • @prettybooswag I said she was stunning meaning she's beautiful. What the helle are you talking about? and know I didn't dislike this

  • the look, the voice, FLAWLESS!!!

  • Simply "the voice".

I hate that Phyllis was so tormented in this life...

  • Allison Williams does a show of all Phyllis's music. Shes great

  • I'm familiar with her work...you're right...great underrated singer

  • That piano player...wow.

  • haha I know the person who sorta of look like her and has the voice to match KEKE WYATT

  • the only person i could think of with a voice similar to that of hers is toni braxton

  • Jasmine Sullivan

  • I wonder who would play Phyllis Hyman best if they ever did a movie about her....????

  • @stewartduane

The late eighties artist Vesta could probably do it

  • jazmine sullivan

  • I think she'd be a great fit too. There were so many sides to Phyllis though. I can see VAnessa Williams, Jill Scott, Queen Latifah (not really for the vocal but her overall look) etc. It's a wonderful thing to think about.

  • @stewartduane there is a unknown person out there watching & studying her as we speak!!!

ya know she will have to lip sync... but so what?

  • Wonderful!!!

  • There's just something about the voices that come out of Philadelphia: Phyllis Hyman, Jill Scott, Patti LaBelle, Stylistics, Teddy Pendergrass, Jasmine Sullivan...nothing but SOUL.

  • great observation.. your absolutely right

  • @LaBelleOfTheBall Detroit has a nice sound as well...

  • Beauty and class. We love you Phillis!

  • Look at those lips. Oh my goodness!

  • She was such a stunning woman and her voice makes you want to scream!!! Just awesome

  • OMG!!!! Now that was "the voice" !!!!! Jeezus

  • That's SANGING!!!

  • Just fell in love with this woman all over again....what a fantastic vid thanks...LOVE IT!

  • she was so sexy!!! a COMPLETE lady!!! hmmm!!!

  • Wow

  • 2:50 - 3:11 I got goosebumps!

  • 1:54 blew me away

  • She was so beautiful

  • Truly, one of a kind :(

  • She was just... gorgeous...

  • What a woman!

  • I have to have this soundtrack and play

  • Love her interpretation and expression in this tune. Beautiful.

  • YES PHYLLIS @ 1:56

  • Yes, and notice how she's always aware of the LYRIC. When she improvises, it is very tasteful and with a purpose. She continues to tell the story without filling up space with predictable riffs just for the sake of riffing.

OH, and I almost forgot the gorgeous tone and use of dynamics..

  • So true. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any current r&B singers who don't do those "filler" and predictable rifts....

  • Gosh, she is just beautiful beyond words.

    Definitely a Diva AND Legend.

  • LOL That look at 3:55 - that was Grandeur at it's finest. Gone Phyllis!!!

  • She makes you feel every emotion with every note...just gives me chills. She was more than a songstress, she was a

    DIVA. EXTRAORDINAIRE

  • This woman CAPTURES every intense emotion of love and passion as she sings...Phyllis (I call Lady Phyl affectionately) had it going on even with her own personal challenges...she would have turned 60 this year and she is GREATLY missed...thanks for sharing this clip.

  • A celebratory song, but she somehow makes it aching and pained toward the end. So real and arresting

  • I miss her and all the music that could have been. I treasure her performances in Sophisticated Ladies. Thank you for posting them.
