Yes this is a derivatives meltdown. Mortgage-backed securities have all kinds of embedded OPTIONS(a kind of derivative). The producer of a mortgage has the OPTION to change the rate hence the term adjustable rate mortgage. The buyer of the mortgage usually has the OPTION to prepay. But as you point out this is the tip of the iceberg. Think of anything you wanted to bet on and there would have been an investment bank willing to produce a derivative security for you. Bookies are now calling in.

There is strong intelligence pointing to two different events that have a high probability of taking place.
