rome total war was just unbalanced when it came to the fighting. it was pretty much all luck. like how they started to overrun your walls..... 7 people could have easily stood there and hit him from all sides at once and killed them as they came up.
True, especially about the Urban Cohorts. The game does cheat a few times on seiges where some of my units are going up the ladders they just fall off so I lose like half of each unit. Kinda sucks!
Know your units, strengths & weaknesses. Protect your flanks with cavalry units, know your enemy (units and the way they are layout) such as formations. Defending is usually a good way but sometimes it could turn against you. It's mostly knowing what your enemy is going to do but there are loads of tactics to use against other armies.
