Anyone know in a classic WWII movie when a soldier yells at the other soldier in a tank caught on fire, "Jump Joe, JUMP!...I can't, I got no legs!!!!!!!" Who knows the name of that classic WWII movie??...It's either in the 1940's or 1950's
1:16 Looks like the preacher is going to get frostbite if he doesn't have trench foot already. The latter of which probably took out as many men as German fire.
I first saw this movie as a child and it has shaped my vision of how I see our country and many of my beliefs. to me it is one of the greatest movies of all time. My Father was in the 42nd Rainbow division that freed Dachau- can't spell it but you can look it up. This scene applies so much today- More than ever.
My parish priest was a chaplain with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy during the war. He could really preach and could teach all of us a few things.
"Let us all pray in his own way to his own god". This is Hollywood's attempt to put it's athiestic, pagan, self belief, doctrine on the world. There are definitely many gods, as this scene shows. The scriptures are very clear that there is only one Father, and he is not a god. Definition in hebrew for God=Demon. And the archeological evidence backs up the scriptures that His name is Yahweh, not God. Great movie, maybe, but this message is totally unscriptural.
Isn't his point that any one who claims one religion or no religion as the only way no different than fascism? The scene is cut, but the agnostic/atheist/doubter joins in. What some people call an attack on religion is often a call for freedom. Resistance to being force~fed under the guise of freedom. How can one force someone to say 'one nation under God'? Read the Constitution. Freedom to believe as one wants. & how is love defined to any one religion?
Do you truly mean an attack on religion or an attack on the ethics and morality which spring from most religion? A point frequently overlooked these days, is that no other country in the history of the world ever gave so freely of her sons, daughters, and resources to free other peoples, than the United States. US leaders aside, the US citizen-soldier's values were to FREE others, not conquer, and that ethic traditional came from a {predominantly] Christian religious value.
@dday0606 Ideals are one thing, reality is another. You're right about all the values of freeing others, but when you look f.e. at US foreign policy in Latin America, especially Central America, from the late 1800s until pretty much now, you see a very different picture: military intervention motivated by economic interests.
I'm not talking about religion here, but when you talk about how the US always gives resources etc to free others, you do not do justice to a large part of history.
It seems to me that the call for freedom of religion" has morphed into "freedom from religion." the last time I heard controversy about the "under God" part of the pledge of allegiance, it was about being forced to hear it, not being forced to say it.
Similarly, we have "freedom from speech" where speech codes at universities reflect a perceived right against being offended.
It is this aspect of the "attacks on religion" I find worrisome.
Well, I do not know if one can be forced to hear it, yet one should be free to say it. A problem comes when it is such a ceremony in a public school. Offering to opt out is a poor option. A child will feel undue pressure, feel outcasted, be forced to make a public statement on a matter that they should not at that time & place. To express fully feelings & opinions, perhaps, still incipient & inchoate, against a seemingly monolith, one reduced in simplicity, yet with strong implications.
your ramble is a study in modern progressive-ism. a talk in circles with no answer where all is right and nothing is wrong
I have a copy of the Constitution on the shelf above this computer. It is no more than a pamphlet 22 pages long.
art. 1. sect 1-10 is legislative. art. 2: 1 thru 4 is executive, art 3: 1-3 is judicial: art IV, V, VI,VII is housekeeping . Does Amendment 1 to the constitution illustrate your point somehow, if you actually have one?
@s6u6r6f6 Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. What is your point?
One cannot force someone to believe in someone else's god.
"We must never again let any force dedicated to ... a super idea or a super anything become strong enough to impose itself ... We must be smart enough and tough enough in the beginning to put out the fire before it starts spreading."
god, good and evil were concepts created to soothe our fears against the unknown? Years ago an airline had a slogan that said "for years mankind has looked to the heavens for the extraordinary." We do not just create concepts to soothe our fears. We have an innate desire for the unknown, transcendent, and ultimately the supernatural. Have you ever watched Star Wars? We can find our answers to the unknown, tranScendent, and supernatural in one divine person. HIS NAME IS JESUS. READ THE BIBLE.
Astounding what atheists can ignore. What arrogance and contempt many have. There has been a change recently in the atheism industry: they're now more "anti-theists", at war with God. We've seen the usual atheist suspects urge their flocks to attack the faithful as ignorant and enemies of learning, etc. How sadly wrong.
What is it about the idea of God that fills them with such hatred? Isn't it enough just to not believe? Why do they seek to destroy believers?
@OtisWild Go to the root cause of terrorism. Why do Muslims attack us? Im sure its not because we are rich and free and it won't be stopped by being tough . U will probably find that some blame lies at our feet nd we are too selfrighteous to see it. Just like the unfair portion of the blame on Germany for ww1 and the heavy burderns placed on her lead to suffering and thus the Nazi rise to power came back to bite us in the ass. Most Taliban r just angry farmers who have had families killed by us.
Why not just buy it? You Tube is already under pressure from Fox and others to remove ANY and ALL clips of copyrighted movies. When you ask something like that, it adds to claims of copyright violation. Fox blocked one of the 'Patton' clips I had here. I post clips to urge others to BUY a legal copy of the movie-there are plenty of sources of legal movies at low cost. Since Fox's action, I have removed ALL Patton clips, and no longer urge the purchase of Patton.

god created everything. god created hitler. therefore, the chaplain says they must fight against what god has created. consistency is lacking methinks
God Created, but humanity is always given the free choice to corrupt[or not] what is given. God also created Satan, [if you believe in evil], but God did NOT create the corruption of power Satan chose. The CHOICE to build or destroy is given to each individual.

and the choice is guided by emotions in one way or another. god makes things corruptable and thus contributes to suffering. god creates the desire within people to want to corrupt. god created the rebellious nature of satan that led to satans choice of rebellion. choice is not in a vaccuum: it stems from feelings that are beyond our control
What a silly attempt to give semantics power over God.
Can you not, for discussion, concede a supreme being whose purposes, methods and plan are so far beyond human capacity as to be inconceivable? I think I'll grant that an intelligence with power to create might be beyond the ability of human minds to understand it.
I guess I just don't have faith. I'm an a-nihilist - can't believe nothing somehow made itself into something, and then turned itself into the universe, to life and man.
not really. because why would god create humans who are incapable of understanding him? why would he deliberately create ignorant creations? isn't that like creating faulty software that increases the chances for suffering of those who struggle to understand why god allows so many awful things to exist and yet claims to love unconditionally. so no, that sort of god doesn't make sense to me.
believing something created the universe doesn't equate a sentient creator, much less god

The attack on the individual's freedom is what worries me.
The freedom to choose one's own sense of spiritual conscience, & the time & place & manner of expressing that.
