The explosion is the overheated oil returning to the reservoir and blowing the top off, then caught fire. The official cause is brake drum failure, but you will have that when you let a load of that size drop even a little. Operator error is more likely.
They are going to love me for this...It happened in 2008 at the Westfarmers Curragh coal mine in central Queensland, Australia. The only injury (minor) was the operator of the Lampson 4600 translift that was supporting the dragline boom and incidently dropped it.
It is actually an equipment failure. Look to the right of the video & you can see the explosion before it drops the boom. The Dragline was being rigged up at the time of the incident. Hats off to the Crawler operator in the middle of the video. It could have gone over as well!
I was working at this mine on that day.. i didnt hear/see it as i was in a digger.. but we had to drive past it.. we were told NO PHOTOS AT ALL.. so this has been leaked from higher up... as far as i can tell, the dragline boom looks like it was always going to hit the crane boom no matter how slow it was lowered... and usually they use the pennant ropes of the dragline itself to lower the boom.. so no idea why they were using a crane

We've rigged a BE 2570 boom and raised and lowered it with the hoist. It's bigger than that Marion 8050.
