  • Its the COOKIE MONSTER!

  • Just for the record this has nothing to do with a WWI soldier. Google Banjo Paterson and then the poem's title and you'll learn all about it.

  • You know what Tom Waites , you were my beacon when I was having a bad time but I came out of it stronger, thank you

  • Superbe!!! Émouvant!!!

  • god save cown under ever!!!!!!

  • Your opinion is limited to a simple growl in his voice. The man is a poet, performer and innovator. If you feel the need to draw comparisons, then do so, but give credit where credit is due. No one discounts what Armstrong has accomplished or his legacy, but Waits, beyond the gruff in his voice, is a completely different artist with a whole separate genius.

  • @volksball Waits is a performance artist that you either 'get' or you don't. I don't always understand fully what his meanings are but seldom have I seen or heard a musician who can so suddenly transport you to another space and time. He is unique and taps into those places in our hearts that we are out of touch with and pulls them up for examination like no one else has done in a long time. This old tune dating from WWI about a shattered soldier has never been done with more passion.

  • @willmoyer1 hahaha, shut up douche bag. That is his voice, always has been.

  • Easily one of the best music videos i've ever seen.

  • Het mooiste van het mooiste! Bedankt Tom! I <3 it!

  • @laceylocket1 nobody is asking you.

  • Tom Waits is not music as I have seen it in any incarnation before. This is good...I believe I can go to bed too now. This isn't a funny comment...it's true! Beautiful and ugly at the same time. Like life. ZzZzzzz...

  • there is only one tom waits

  • Comment removed

  • now i can go to bed. thank you Tom your the best

  • ha ha ha what a epic voice

  • me cagaste

  • epic

  • Wonderful....

  • he is the most

  • Powerful and emotional song - beautifully written, and enigmatically performed by the great Tom Waits. Love this so much!

  • le dernier des beatniks

  • Now let me think...what is that old saying?.....oh yeah...SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER!...please

  • @pyrofella There's another saying too. It's called SHUT THE FUCK UP.

  • @pyrofella Nobody cares what you think. Why don't you blog about it?

  • @pyrofella Hey dicksplash, It's 'DON'T shoot the piano player'

I'm sure you'll find some Big Fun vids if you look hard enough

  • @beanzyred Well said. Super performance with a great song.

  • He's Awesome!!!!... That is all lol

  • I think isn't 'Wal;tziong Matilda' but rather 'No More Waltzing Matilda' whichisaabout a wounded military veteran whose been terribly changed from foghting. Listen to the actual lyric.

  • Tom Trauberts Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen) is the actual name of the song...not Waltzing Matilda. But yes, probably one of my favorite Waits tunes.

  • hello genius perfection

  • it's really great. tom waits at his best- if you don*t like it, never mind, keep on seeing casting shows with stupid little boys and girls who don*t know anything about music, this man has to be respected for his way of life

  • I'm speechless...

  • Simply put: THE best. Tom's a national treasure. No songwriter holds a candle to him.

  • creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps

  • The contrast between his gruff cartoonish voice and the delicate nature of the song is ironic and intriguing. I like it.

  • @jerzeq3 spoken like a true and blue hipster

  • Read your history, children.

  • Never disliked an ugly non-voice more.

My rusted John Deere tractor makes a better noise BUT it never pretended to be a musician.

  • @kjallesoft I don`t think there is any reason to offend someone. If you don`t like this, that´s ok; this is not for everybody. But at least you should appreciate the work of a singer and songwriter, who is not a casting-show winner or one of those day flies, that sing songs their record label tells them to without being even able to write their own music. The voice may be too extreme for you, but it fits the song. At least appreciate the work of an artist, even if you don´t like it. It won´t hurt.

  • @kjallesoft It's cool if this isn't your bag, but I can't help thinking how much you are missing the point... There are plenty of beautiful "technical" singers out there to choose from. Enjoy them!

  • I found this amazing song, in a "Golden age' of the witnesses jehovahs, 1996...

when I hear this music, i think my heart is will broke...

  • 1:09 we have found the new joker for the new batman film, ladies and gentlemen..

  • Can't beat that...

  • heres to your heart tom i'd waltz with you anytime

  • An amazing and unique talent. Thankyou Mr. Waits!

  • Liebe die Stimme... bekomm immer Gänsehaut...

    Love this voice ...

  • Throat

  • "Don't plant your bad days. They grow into weeks. The weeks grow into months. Before you know it you got yourself a bad year. Take it from me. Choke those little bad days. Choke 'em down to nothin'. They're your days. Choke 'em!”

    Tom Waits

  • when I'm down and out, walking around, it's one of the tunes that I have in mind, keeping me from jumping, keeping me alive.

  • 0:45 Charles Manson

  • @DoobstockProductions Ha ha that made me laugh.

  • 271 people should have been a blow job

  • As often as I listen to it, this song always makes me down and sad, but yet I love to play it over and over again. Sad can be so beautiful.

  • Far and away, the most soulful video on all of youtube.

  • I so love Tom Waits! What a performer!!!

  • I wish he'd come to New Zealand so we could see him live!!

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • Honest , dont get the joke. He cant sing ,come on, most every day people i know can sing better than that. He plays the piano ok is all.

  • @Angus1966 don't hate, appreciate

  • @MegaSam1234 Tom is great. He is lennon without mcartney. solo is not his forte. i love any artist giving it an honest go. His music is honest , i could never hate tom waits. Just not my taste is all , i still love him though.

  • @Angus1966 thats cool everyones entitled to their taste in music

  • @Angus1966 You are so missing it. Tom can sing so well, he just has his own distinct style, much like Dylan. Beyond all that, he has written some of the most innovative and creative music the 20th/21st century is privileged to experience.

  • @Angus1966 Rubbish. That is an epic performance of a great song he sings it with soul and passion it's asbsoluteley exquizid you just don't aknowledge him for the great singer\songwriter. he is one of the all time greats and those who don't understand that frankley doesn't appreciate good music that's the end of it

  • @rosseland84 I fully subscribe your opinion,great performance

  • oh matilda! my matilda!

  • The soul of an angel & the voice of a devil. Gotta love Tom. F'ng genius!

  • elo from poland

  • Meine Tochter heißt Mathilde und sie liebt dieses Lied. Nur weiß sie nicht, dass Mathilda die "Watzrolle" der "Tippelbrüder" ist. Egeal. Das Lied isst einfach G E I L!!!

  • as ive allways said fukin shit hot and ur a prick if u dont agree

  • Mustachioed Saxophonist

  • THIS GUY SOUNDS LIKE COOKIE MONSTER... LMAO

  • @DiamondPriest Everyone else here are Tom Waits fans. We know he has a beautiful gravelly voice - this is one of the many reasons why we love him. You don't need to tell us what he sounds like. Show some respect.

  • @StrawberryJungle

    But he's gor the point.

  • randy newman + cookie monster = simply amazing!

  • Tom makes it all worthwhile

  • just beautiful

  • holy shit is a locast

  • C is for cookie, that's good enough for me! Oh Cookie Cookie Cookie Starts With "C".

  • the greatest!

  • This voice is unique.

  • hits me in the heart!

  • seriously. there are some songs you just take refuge in. and this... seriously...

  • This song is one of my favorites songs for all time. Tom Waits are one of the greatest songwriters ever. One of a kind.

  • But the voice sounds so artificial.... I mean, I would believe it, if the guy would be 80 or 90 years old, but it sounds so played when I look at him.....

Sorry at all fans of this beast ^^

  • @Zimminimal i get what you mean. i think he's just trying to create an atmosphere to his music. he's not trying to be fake, but give it a different feel than it would if he sang normally. check out the album closing time, you might appreciate that a little more. listen to "ol' 55"... probably one of his best songs.

  • I love Tom Waits. And I love this version of such a beautiful Australian song x

  • TOM

  • TRAUBERT'S

  • BLUES

  • really amazing this voice. must be hard to sing this song with this deep bariton voice

  • My co-worker always refers to Tom as "The Cookie Monster", But he also loves his work and always asks me to play some more cookie monster.

  • I'm italian i'm 16 years but i love Tom Waits!

  • @Killer33716 Buon per te, giovane amico. (Sto usando Google Translate per questo, mi dispiace se non esce a destra.)

  • we need a time machine and 259 condoms

  • @djakubo HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA

  • @djakubo NO NO WE NEED ABOUT 300 BECAUSE ALL THE RETARD VIRGINS ARE GONNA KEEP DISLIKING

  • Totally unique and so wonderful! Lucky us :)

  • Great artist.

  • >A Leonard Cohen from 80

  • sorry but he is great...

  • waltzing matilda is an ausie traditional song like la bamba for mexicans. the chorus tom uses is taken ( and twisted) from it, with his own verses.

  • a genius

  • he makes me cry with his amazing voice

  • amazing voice

  • This man really knows how to deliver! If you enjoy the music of Tom Waits you should check out my cover of Chocolate Jesus on my channel.

  • please don't ever delete this

  • Tom Waits doesn't just sing a song - he feels it. Nobody does it better.

  • Fuck, i cannot stop watching it, i just LOVE it

  • @zoenie123 but then the music would not be nearly as good.

  • @zoenie123 You are cancer. You will serve no purpose in the world. Please remove yourself from humanity.

  • Comment removed

  • @DefD7 Thanks for your advice ... :-) .. I will take it into consideration

  • @zoenie123 Listen to some of his earlier stuff ("Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You", and "Ice Cream Man" are very good). His voice is much more pleasant.

  • @RadicalDreamerWD Thanks, I will listen to it :-)

  • hyvä biisi

  • love...like an old wound that won't heal..........brilliant.

  • chip white rules I saw these guys at the Beacon 1977 great then and now!!! p.s,= I always called this song Waltzing matilda

  • is he mark lanegan father?

  • he influences my music so much, reverbnation com / twelvestring

  • one of the most influencing poets and musicians of my life. listening to this song makes me want to start smoking again...the best looking somewhat ugly person in the world

  • one of the most influencing poets and musicians of my life. listening to this song makes me want to start smoking again...

  • if he is not well, than many more of us should get ill !

  • Too hoarse! Sounds like he is not well.

  • No mate. Just. No.

This is nowhere near what the orginal song was meant to sound like; all the feeling that was put into making it has been taken out.

  • @CreepingBoNE I would see your point, if he was singing the original song. the only similarity is the chorus. listen to the lyrics in this song and see it on its own merits, not through a blinded sense of aussie pride...

  • @unciePaul I'm not saying it BAD persay; just that I feel it doesn't do the original song justice.

  • @CreepingBoNE The Aussie version is not the original either

  • @morrismadeleine It was written by an Aussie, FOR Australian's; that's all I need to know.

  • such an amazing song, so touchy and heartbreakin` thx Tom Waits you´re brilliant

    *****

  • never tire of listening to this. TW is in a class on his own. Nobody else like him.

  • GOOSEBUMPS!!!!

  • AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ah lads the Pogues do the best version of this song, slightly different. But more original. Unless we are talking about 2 different songs........which we are not, Tom you are the man, total respect.

  • @polmaccaba01 Yes, the Pogues sing "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda", This is in fact "Tom Trauberts Blues", then there is of course the actual song "Waltzing Matilda", which both songs refer to...

  • @pirateofthecarabiner Piss off....yeah, that's it...

  • @polmaccaba01 Two months, and all you have to say is Piss off? Brilliant.

  • it's an acquired taste, but boy is it delicious.

  • Hello Tom! You just made me very very sad... i'll take it as a bonus........

  • There is no God - PERIOD! And the clocest you ever will get to one is.... true music!

  • @Runnershighfive

Of course there is. I dare to say it after your period. But I agree, for most of us, true music comes closest to Him/Her/It.

  • Oooooh, cough please!

  • legend

  • It's hard not to love Tom Waits !! Very brilliant.

  • @sonjaantke: Well, it's not so hard for 253 senseless people. I pity the fools. Tom Waits is embodied art.

  • My fav

  • hits me in the heart like a crack from a rusty 44 magnum.

  • 33 years of gravity !

  • wow he is so young

  • lol less smoke more win

  • Way, way better than the album version. The strings on the album make it too sentimental.

  • When you look at other artists of the 70's, and what complete failure some of the styles they followed and dressed in, Waits looks like he just walked out of our time, and somehow bent space, and popped up in front of this piano . He could easily pass for a metal band front man.

  • Cookie Monster sure can sing !!!!!

  • @reecemchale I'm pretty sure he wrote this song. This isn't the Australian song you're probably talking about. That might have something to do with him being born in California instead of Sydney, my friend. He just uses these alliterations to other stories/songs in his own music.

  • @DarklyDreaming827 yep...the only part that is the original is the chorus...wonder if he had to pay banjo pattersons estate anything..just like Men at Work were sued for a 5 second similarity to Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree on Down Under ...anyway this song makes me feel like a nice single malt scotch!

  • He's not Australian and boy can you tell.....I hate this version. Give me the broad Aussie accent anyday!

  • He's 28 years old here, voice is shooking

  • '77 seem wrong 2 me

  • Is that his natural voice?

  • @twseel yes my friend!:D

  • Very powerful and beautiful,too!

  • i'm 16, likes to write, enjoys coffee or whiskey with a god book or audio book, read philosophy, astronomy and human nature.i live a long way away from my friends. It gets lonely for obvious reasons that's when tom waits is truly amazing. Love him.

  • Fantastic song and a great voice.
