Yes, he uses legato. Exploring alternate picking now and was thinking about it but either way is a bit too fast.

Just try starting from the second strings, and it is a bit easier on the shorter bar distance.

Either with legato on 2,3,4 or alternate on 2,3 strings, I almost get to speed,

but legato - don't like it with the guitar unplugged

@Mtc259 Myself as well. I.could pluck fast stuff accurrately. I could fret fast stuff accurrately. But when I tried both, I couldn't do it. One of tje biggest trials we guitarists face is accurrately syncing up our fretting and picking hands. It takes a while to get used to this, but if you try hard enough (3-4 hours a day) you could have this little lick down in about 3 or 4 days to a week tops. And then all other complex things you can play!

Paul states that if you can't do the right hand thing on it's own, then you're not yet ready for the fretting part. But I find there are lots of things I can play fine but struggle if attempting left hand and right hand separately. Infact, if I try picking without fretting I find my left hand doing a mid-air fretting action involuntarily anyway. I hope that makes sense, I am VERY amateur so I'd be interested to hear of other peoples experiences on this matter.

@xstevie666 It's a common issue with left/right hand independence. When you're using both hands, they kind of "lock in" with each other because that's something your brain expects them to do. However that's an automatized process where you're not really aware of your motions. It can be an issue when you're trying to play some more advanced legato and string skipping stuff where the motions of both hands aren't completely synched on every beat. Just practice left hand separately.

For others it is important to master all aspects of guitar playing, even incredible technical speed. This is so when the time comes to express yourself using music, an extreme flurry of notes is at your disposal.

Now if you don't know string names, or a good trained ear, you shouldn't be learning this lick.. There are some pull-offs and hammer-ons, but when you put them in, is up to you and your playing style. ENJOY!
