If this is your career path than your doing it for the wrong reasons!!! Training and forcing an animal to be in unatural habitats is abuse. Check out "The Cove" its a movie that shows you exactly where these animals come from. Go ahead and do a degree in Vet Tech and take an intern with a rehab facility. Zoology or Wild life biology-you do not have to work in a zoo and can even further your education to a vet.
@MsSimplicities I agree... The cove is a very sad movie.I watched it right after I visited discovery cove Orlando and was sick ...If you truly have a passion for animals do not support them being in an unnatural habitat.
If you love animals and want to help them, then rescue rehab and release them. Dolphin trainers get to baby talk and pet these animals that are kept in swimming pools...but they just don't respect the nature of the dolphins...which is a free, wild, migratory animal that belongs in the ocean.
Working at these prisons is an act of selfish love. It's an indulgence to experience captive creatures that belong home. People who truly love animals will want for the animals to be happy and free.
@MrConnorGames I used to believe that they were, but I was a gullible child then and believed what the trainers at the show told me. Then I got older and thought about it. Now, I have difficulty imagining how anyone would be happy in a place like that. Small space, Same companions, dead fish, all excessive noise, no waves, no surfing... To me, it sounds like a circus, display case, and prison blended into one.
Hey, yall, I think more zoos and aquariums should accomodate veterans! Who agrees? Not all of them coming back from Iraq or Afganistan want to do industry or security work, maybe they want to do something related to animals, such as in the zoo world or aquarium. Hey, that sounds like me, and I have a wildlife degree! Can I get any supporters out there? Thanks!
Does all of these girls look beautiful. I think zoos descriminate a little too much against the male genders or the so/so looking older people. I been following the path to volunteering and working with wildlife but I still get the evil eye sometimes or most of the time and I am professional....It is a daunting and rewarding career but very competitive with these pretty girls around. Not that I am against it but there should be a balance. A fair balance...Yeah?
i want to do something with animals but i have a disability which is terrible i want to know if there is anyone out there who was successful with a disability
@ProphetGuardian 2) I find it more likely that a young person with a passion for these animals would be so impacted by the experience that they would no longer want to even see them in captivity, let alone train them to do tricks. former Sea World Trainer - Carol Ray. CNN.
@ProphetGuardian 1) It would be surprising to me if a young person could see these beautiful and intelligent mammals in the environment they are meant to be in, and then still want to work with them in captivity. I have to imagine that would take a lot of rationalizing.
@metridium Points 1 and 2 excellent. Its funny how when your average Joe or small time animal worker does something wrong the activist go crazy. But when big dealers like Sea World keep a large whale in a tank barely big enough for a goldfish silence as they look the other way.
@Orkid8591 There's always a way! I drive 2.5 hours one way each weekend to volunteer at a zoo in a neighboring zoo. When it comes to your dreams, go the extra mile! Or...10..or 50....:) Don't let the distance stop you!
more than the distance, they wont let me, a 16 year old volunteer anywhere. they say you have to be 18+ and have to have experience dealing with people (like customer service)...
the nearest zoo for me would be Safari, its around 2-2.5 hours by car (i dont have a license and my parents dont have the time, the bus takes at least 3 hours). there is a biodome, its also 18+ but its a lot nearer than the zoo. there is an SPCA 10 minutes by bus, but again, 18+. is there any other way?
@lovlyanime I think you should volunteer with domestic animals(Local animal shelter). They are more worthy of support. See zoos for what they are: display cases. The animals probably aren't very happy in such small places. Be careful of who you choose to support.
I wanted to be a zoo vet, but I had to drop out of school due to a nervous breakdown. None of the vets want volunteers and the closet zoo is over an hour away and I can't drive. I'm really thinking about just saying "fuck it" and joining the ALF.
i truely hope i can be a marine trianer, those that trian and swim with the killer whales and do shows with the dolphins i mean it would be soo cool to be 50 feet in the air with a killer whale!! =) <333
Well, I am volunteering where I can, and I get work experience at our local vets. I also study a lot. And I am studying GCSE as Well as BTEC in Science.
I too love hearing them! I really hope that I could work with animals when I am older. I am starting to train now and I am only 14! It shows how much animals mean to me.
@ TheReebecakeenan i watched that movie and it was sad!!! I totally agree that all animals at marine parks should be free!!!!

I encourage everyone who wants to visit/work with animals at the zoo or sea world to watch "The Cove" animals are meant to be free.

14 and already worked at two different nature centers near me. Snakes and frogs and birds. Pretty cool. Good to live near DC

What sucks about zookeeping is that you need to shovel animal crap. Yeah. But allot of other stuff too that are rewarding. So I guess I'll go for it.

The surveys we have conducted ... show that the overwhelming majority of our visitors
leave us without increasing either their knowledge of
the natural world or their empathy for it. There are even
times when I wonder if we dont make things worse by
reinforcing the idea that man is only an observer of
nature and not a part of it. President- The Zoological Society of Philadelphia
