20 years later this goal must still torment Calgary fans. If Flames had scored in OT then their next opponents would have been LA who strugggled in 1st round to get past a Vancouver team that finished last out of 16 playoff teams and then Minnesota who finished 15th. Calgary would have had about a 50-50 shot in Final vs Pittsburgh who needed six games to dispose of the North Stars. So close, yet so far.
As a Canucks fan I don't like either team, but I've been watching hockey since '69, and this series was the most entertaining brutal series ever.Hats off to both teams!
@eeti27 It wasn't that he wasn't happy... His knee was shot that year and he could barely put weight on it. He only played 53 games because of it. Look at how he comes off the bench... He's moving like he's 90 yeas old!
I'm an Oilers fan and THAT was indeed the best series I've EVER witnessed. Like many have said - an absolute war EVERY night (look how awkward Messier looks as he leaves the bench). But full credit to the Flames though - for almost a full decade the best 2 teams in hockey were in Alberta.
Both the Flames and Oilers battled for league supremacy in that era,let alone the Battle Of Alberta!Hats off to the Oilers for winning a Stanley Cup & at least reaching the final 4 twice after that post-Gretzky!Being a Flames fan, that's not easy to say!
This Game 7 Flames OT loss had to be the most devastating of all their record setting Game 7 OT losses because of Theoren Fleury's heroics just 2 nights prior to that.Tikkanen scored a fluky goal but they all count!
that had to be the greatest series ive ever seen in my life. Every game was an absolute war! The fighting the hitting the goaltending that was amazing.
After oilers beat the kings next round and they werent playing well against the stars somebody asked muckler what was wrong with the squad. Muckler said we still have scars from the series with the flames!
One thing's for sure, they didn't come out of the Flames series unscathed and while it didn't quite catch up with them against L.A.,they totally fell apart against Minnesota! The following season's Oilers roster was considerably different than this one,as they lost Messier to the Rangers, & Glenn Anderson & Grant Fuhr got traded to the Leafs. That's just to name a few.
U know what that could of cost them the cup again that season u were right and just like iw as saying they fell apart against minnesota.
Actually im not sure how they would of faired against the pens though that would of been a great series the oilers vs the pens. If calgary would of won in game 7 that year i dont think they would of won the stanly cup either
Calgary and Edmonton that year besides thep ens were probably close to being best two overall teams in the nhl.
dont forget that the Oilers were down 3-0 in Game 7 but Tikkanen scored hattrick included game-winning goal
