I have been a die-hard Cavies fan from the 80's. I was at the Bloomington regionals in 93 and saw Star beat the Cavies like they stole something. I was really mad at the time and didn't agree with the results, but the more you watch this show and listen to the music, it becomes very clear how ground-breaking a performance this really was. I wish Star was still around shaking things up. Maybe if they were, they could remind the drum corps world how to kick butt without synthesyzers a
Saw this in 1993-at DCI they did get jipped -because judges didn't agree that art could be part of the winning DCI performance. hey were aready to leave regardless-they had performers that actually got injured in earlier years from crowd booing and tossing things at them.Change is hard to accept. They were awesome, innovative - and changed DCI. I loved and still love Drum Corp and DCI.Seeing them again this year in the reunion performance-they haven't done corp in 16 years and they were AWESOME!!
never forget seeing the traveling show with Canadian Brass. It was the first time I actually got to talk to both James Mason and Bill Cook. I was floored at just how genuine and warm they were while actually listening to a 'young guy's opinion... and the cherry on the sundae? I saw the show on July 4th at the Planting Fields Arboretum on Long Island. One of the Canadian Brass guys said "we just want to thank you for celebrating Americas Independence with a bunch of Canadian horn players".:)
your wrong you dont get paid you HAVE TO PAY get your facts straight star of indiana didnt get paid you are so wrong and i dont care if you posted this a month ago
Umm get over it! Both of you acting like immature dumbasses calm down and enjoy this video of BLAST in the making! Its history so calm down with your disrespectful stupidity!
I have always wondered about Star 93, I marched DCI 94, did we (DCI) loose something in not giving the Championship to them that year? would they have stayed? and by the way any thoughts on Phantom 08?
On Phantom, I think they got lucky on that night. BD had been undefated until Allentown a week before, and they were beaten by Cavies, not Phantom. In Quarterfinals, they were in third, then they moved up to second in semis trailing BD by a healthy two points. In finals, BD had a bad night and Phantom had a good night resulting in them winning by only 25/1000 of a point. It was a groundbreaking show, but if champions were judged by thier performance thruoghout the season, then BD would've won.
just my opinion ...but perhaps BLAST started because of the B.S. judging in DCI!!! Star was completely jipped in 1993! Hey, Cadets were great, but STAR raised the bar...especially in 1993. IMO they transcended DCI and the judges didn't know how to handle the situation. STAR was so unique and freakin clean it came down to TASTE and the judges just rejected STARS' style..boooo!!! that's my opinion.....
I have seen both Cadets and Star 93 many times and I can see why the score was so close..Cadets had a great show with an amazing closer...but Stars' entire show was jaw dropping. Finals night belonged to Star IMO.
I agree... i was on tour with cavie's staff all summer in 1993 and no one... i repeat NO ONE had ever seen anything remotely close to Star's show... incredibly executed clean... all facets. They went undefeated in percussion all summer... but not just percussion was perfect... brass, visual, concept and the GE... awesome. 93 cadets was good, sure... but nothig original, business as usual... and really sort of dirty and tangled.
I never understood why it was necessary to kill the drum corps to start the brass theatre. If it had to be one or the other, I'd MUCH prefer to still have the drum corps around, but why not do both? Could have done brass theatre in corps' off season. All that trouble to create a consistently awesome corps, with good financing, and then just kill it. Breaks my heart.
I always wondered what members who marched Star as a drum corps thought about the transition. Especially those who marched both on the field, and the stage during that time. (93-Brass Theatre) The move they made was incredibly bold, and brought something new, and exciting. Still if the corps I had marched pulled the same move I admit I'd be heartbroken. I just can't imagine wearing the same uniform on a stage. Just my thoughts of course.
I marched Star from 1993-95. I was a little scared about sacrificing my age out year in 94 to go 'indoors' but it ended up being amazing. We went from learning 12 minutes of music to learning a production that was over an hour and a half long and had to be adapted to be perfomed in both arenas and orchestral sheds. As a part of that group I was able to perform at the Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia, Lincoln Center (twice), Wolftrap, and a bunch of arenas across the country.
So I'm curious as to what this was meant to be. I understand Star ended in 93, so is this the Blast! before it officially became Blast!...and I know Star and Blast! are really one in the same
I still dont understand why they use concert euphoniums and baritones?

Star already made plans to leave prior to the 93 season, would have made no difference whether they win or not.

Star would have gone to Brass theater reguardless of if they won or lost, the desicion was made before the season started.
But I agree that star should have won 93.

I didn't really like Star 93 visually. Too much crap on the field. Those spinning stars!
The brass though...yeah.

I miss Star of Indiana in DCI and they were WAY before I marched (in 2007).
DCI would not be where it is today if Star stuck around for another few years.
