In India few sisters are going against the Bible. Being a Muslim i have the habit of reading the Bible regularly. But when i ask the Sisters for justice, they create lot of problems in my family with the police officials and politicians, illegally. I hurt a lot. But, i have a great hope in my mind, that Lord Jesus will help me......
One thing that I wish was portrayed was the fact that these Sisters as well as other orders of religious are not only there for themselves, but FOR US! They are there praying for US! That is an awesome thing! Wouldn't you say??!!
I have 2 aunts who are nuns. And they both left their homes in such a young age. Its a calling. I don't know how to describe it and I don't know if I have that calling yet. But life is more than just having sex or checking facebook or texting. When you find something greater and something worth living, all the worldly things become just mere fantasies. God bless all the nuns across the world. They uplift the image of the catholic church around the world ! Praise the lord !
@maria1125 yeah, seeing that the current media only takes out "shocking phrases" to bring down religion or other "different special" things these days! but anyway, I don't think they could alter much between all the happiness and radiant joy! there wasn't any "shocking thing" said!
Silence is probably the most important part of prayer in a lot of ways. Haha I always tell friends that being quiet is the best step; one of my friends who was going throug ha really dry spiritual time decided to just be still and listen to God and experience His closeness and love. I'd say dothat in your daily prayer, and then discern any steps ahead. :) God bless!
As a current postulant in a men's religious community, my brothers and I were extremely happy to watch this show. We were practically cheering. There seems to be a renovation going on in certain Catholic religious communities; we are hopeful about the future!
I thank Oprah for showing sisters that, choose religious life and are "strange." However, I'm sure Oprah had done some research and some of the questions were, I believe, insulting even though Oprah claimed ignorance. Did you hear a voice? Do you reconsider having given up material things and sex? Or, don't you still have sexual thoughts? Oprah's questions should have focused on the deep peacefulness the sisters have in contrast to a world gone mad.
To 1seticat: I hear what you're saying. I'm good with the show because good show business is not about what the host already knows, but is about the host asking the questions she knows the members of her audience have on *their* minds. The difference between a ho-hum host and a superstar like Oprah, is that Oprah is brilliant at sussing what her audience wants her to ask her guests, and then asks it.
Don't disagree, but there is a line one shouldn't cross, when facial expressions & tone are similiar as if she was questioning people who claim alien abduction. She couild have stated a question as follows," So by becoming a Nun, you believe you've freed yourself from the secular world and now better appreciate how shallow that world can be?" Oprah seemed very comfortable with T. Cruise as he jumped all over the place like a monkey on acid regarding his upcoming marraige.
I think that you are wrong in thinking the questions were insulting. As a former seminarian I can remember the questions that my secular friends asked in complete honesty and they were right up that line and even more direct. The fact of the matter is that people do not know the answers to these questions and therefore I thought it was great that she asked these simple questions. You must realize that the world is spiritually dead. Religion is alien to the newer generations.
1seticat, I completely agree with you. But some people who have fully embraced the culture cannot see past the material world of pleasure and belongings.
The questions are a bit off-putting, but they are the same exact ones my secular friends asked me when I told them I'm considering religious life, so it's probably a good thing they got answered. The Sisters certainly answered with grace.
Congratulations on considering the religious life! You will certainly be in my prayers. I hope that you will successfully be able to discern and act upon God's will for your life!
Wow, I'm sooo impressed with Oprah, I never would have thought she'd be interested in learning about the religious. Of course, the Dominican's are a really beautiful order, I wish I had money to contribute the their order. God is good, thanks Oprah!
Very well said but keep in mind... this is NOT for everybody and NOT everyone has been privileged enough to live without the "perverse idols" (Clearly you're not a Sister by your choice of words) so go easy on them ;-)
What impresses me is how well all these sisters reflect their excellent faith formation, giving authentic expression to the freedom and depth of their vocations. It is interesting to watch how easily and charitably they respond to the warped and ignorant fascination of Oprah and Ling with what the sisters "give up" (money, sex, technology) the perverse idols that define Oprah's "normal," but from which the sisters have liberated themselves. What they have gained is the pearl of great price.
Yes, would that we would all reply so "easily and charitably". Notice none of the nuns called Oprah's attitudes or dispositions "warped and ignorant" nor did they accuse her of setting up "perverse idols". No, the Sisters are at too much peace for that, and see Christ in all people, even non-Catholics, too much to respond that way. Wow, we lay Catholics could learn a lot from them - and I suppose that is why we are posting on youtube rather than giving ourselves in love to God so radically.
I'm at a loss to see how a blunt assessment of popular culture expressed in direct language is somehow contrary to a Catholic Christian attitude. Is there anything untrue in my observation? Read a little St. Peter Damien. Read a little St. Paul. Read Matthew 23. Neither euphemism nor silence are signs of piety. And although I respond to the call to holiness differently than the Sisters, I live my vocation radically. There are different spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit. Peace.

I cannot believe this was not altered in any way or form to make the sisters look bad. In shock about how much they were able to speak.

I am like them. My soul screams out for silence, and I think I must go and find out for myself.
