Cantonese is considered a farmers dialect if you are to speak to any Chinese or Tai person who speaks Mandarin. Mandarin is BY FAR the most widely spoken language in China, and is also the most widely spoken language in the world. It doesn't matter that most Chinese speakers you know that live in America speak Cantonese, that's an incredibly small test sample. The truth of the matter is that there are not just a few, but MANY more Mandarin speakers in, and out of China.

@Norman765r Mandarin is the most widely spoken Chinese language within China spanning from the South, Central, North, Northwest, and Northeast. Cantonese is mostly spoken in Southeast China and Hong Kong. Many Chinese immigrants I know speak Cantonese which means more Cantonese speakers go out of China. I rarely meet any Chinese ppl that speak Mandarin.
