  • That's pretty amazing. As an animator, I'd cum in my pants if I could make a character with hair that good. Hair is incredibly difficult, even in animation. I just have a GTS 450. I hope it isn't already time to upgrade...

  • Are there any apps out there that will allow me to make nappy (Black) hair? Hm?

  • is it serious? we're gonna have realistic hair in games for once?

  • this has been around forever, the hair simulation that is shown here can be done in maya or 3d studio max, those programs have been able to do this for a decade but this video is explaining that we will see this in realtime with the next generation of gamesystems because they will use dx11, but in maya or max you can render the frames 1 at a time

  • I see things like this get demoed, but almost never used. Same story every time; A few games come out with new hardware in mind, showcasing features, something very conspicuously rather than subtly (HEY, LOOKIE AT MY NEW TRICKS), but in the end these features are ignored in favor of some shoddy engine any given company is fixated on using.

I've seen this happening since the old VooDoo days, and in all these years it's never changed. Makes me just a little mad.... and yeah, hair's floaty.

  • I love it when my hair clips my face too!

  • bad shampoo day

  • I wonder if this can do curly hair as well.

  • too floaty

  • I whip my hair back and forth!!

  • Looks beautiful! I hate how so many games now, the creators get lazy and just give everyone short hair = no need to animate

Or the hair isn't animated at all...

  • Her hair's bouncing but it's not behaving. Get that poor girl some Prell shampoo.

  • The question is not if you can simulate the hare. The question is if you can simulate it in a full blown scene with millions of polygons to render, full shaded textures with parallax mapping, normal mapping and so on, and have 20-30 characters on screen. The simulation now looks on slow-mo and that's not even a true hardcore test of the hardware.

  • @stolmasa *hair (don't know what I was thinking :D )

  • how was that hair even made which program??!

  • She looks scary

  • I dont care about the physics I dont want the hair to go through the shoulders or clothes

  • @TacticProductionz but that makes to much common sense it cant be done. This is how it seems 3d software developers think. they can have problems in there software for many versions and never do anything about it.

  • It's quite expensive to get a laptop with this graphics card though.

  • Nivida are the winning!

  • How kool! I've always wanted to see realistic looking hair on some game characters

  • @Irra09 have you not seen the latest final fantasy games thay seem to be doing a good job

  • @ichigo1606 yea but u can see the big diference from the cinematic and the actual game. in the game the hair looks like is divided in sections

  • Now how much does it cost?

  • oh yeah that's sooooooo realistic... for physics... because i've never seen any girl with such smooth hair... HOW IN THE WORLD ARE THEY REALISTIC???

  • The clumping algorythm is amazing!!!

  • Is this realtime Nvidia preview?

  • This hair:

    'FCK U GRAVITY'

  • Comment removed

  • YAY, now she can bang her head to the metal \m/

  • AWESOME!!

  • looks like monty oum is out looking for stuff for his next epic film

  • MONTY OUM LIKED IT !!!!!!

  • i want to see it headbang xD

  • THIS VIDEO DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH TITS ON IT

  • *thinks of Sephiroth, Seymore, and all other FF crazy hair styles*

    Oh lord...

  • Does the hair of Japanese women flow like that in the wind?

Cause I'm gonna have to collect one if they do...

  • @Asemco Collect what? Their hair, or a woman?

  • FUCK IT NVIDIA SO FUCKING AWESOME

  • And then there's the rest of the universe.

  • monty oum add this video is his playlist

  • it would be sickning to see hair like jade or kitana moving like that as they fight i go in do ya'll go in?

  • @lylatfox4 you dont know that yet. besides theres a rumor that says xbox720 will be 5 times more powerful than xbox360. if that rumor was true then i would expect realistic hair like this.

  • dem follices

  • Amazing detail! The simulation manages to capture almost every instance of realism in the interaction between INDIVIDUAL strands, making it nearly PERFECT! This...is TRUE innovation!....and then it goes through her nose. -_-

  • It'd be interesting for the day when they are able to achieve such a realism for the graphics that we wouldn't be able to tell the difference from the real thing, but then I like the surreal and uncanny feeling that graphics offer. Just knowing it is close to perfection is enough for me. After all, I think things would get very complicated if we weren't able to tell the real from the graphically generated.

  • I can already imagine what the next Final Fantasy hairstyle would be :D

  • Wheet-woo!

  • k thats great for 1 character. now make it practical for multiple npcs

  • its amazing, but its nothing like real hair..

  • thing is.... how many polygons are in this? and then how many polygons are in a videogame? -.-

  • @aznsorawarrior how much?

  • @nianicole824 well depending on the method on which they did the hair it would be between 5000(spline hair, then proxies) - 12500 polygons(hair/fur modifer) for the hair, about 600(baked poly)-6000(full model + turbosmooth) for the person so low to high estimate would be 5600 - 18500 polys, an average videogame (rage/borderlands/mw3) would run from 750,000 polygons - 1.5m polys per second.

if we start to talk like crysis 2, anywhere from 1m to around 2.5m (highest setting) per second

  • @aznsorawarrior thats not including physics engine, since the engine is pure mathematics and calculates per polygon and variable force and in a typical game it would be between 1000-10,000 particle per second would be around 2.3 m calcs per sec.

    after that lighting, animation, etc.

the calculations per min for the gtx 580 is around ~30 million calculations per second. meaning that if including everything you have barely enough for around 10 characters on the screen w/ max settings.

  • @aznsorawarrior :O Woah...Would it fit better with an animated movie?

  • @nianicole824 it would. but the difference is that movies can't use things like this software. its more for gaming. Because gaming is dynamic, with movies its simply static with a set animation. when it comes to gaming/movies. gaming has a set number of calcs it can do. with movies, there isn't a extreme high bound. you can have over 5 million actions going on and still render it out. question is how long do you want to wait.

the higher the number in a movie, the slower it renders out.

  • @nianicole824 so for example, the 10 minute intro to a video game? that 10 min intro took 120+ hours to model/animate/create and about 3+ days to render out.

with this technology, they can make better games but until gpus are uber strong/fast, we won't notice it in a lot of games. quantity v quality. for quantity, it makes it more fast pace, quality looks really pretty. depends on the game designer. most games tend to go quality and static environments. meaning less stuff to process.

  • also that just makes me scared for multiple detailed characters on screen lol

  • it moves realistically to a degree, it could just be showcasing but it looks like the hair is just a constant state of slow motion or like maggosh said, like its underwater

  • They just added L'oreal

  • Give 'em all buzzcuts. Problem solved! :D

  • It looks very nice, but...it's stuck in the Uncanny Valley for me. It looks like it's underwater.

  • I whip my hur.

  • Hm... Interesting, this is a certain program only for game development?

  • Thumbs up if you're looking at alot of hot girls videos in the suggestion bar

  • My intel hd graphics runs at 3fps

  • Is this a shampoo commercial? :D

  • Is good, but natural hair would never flow/move like this, it would have to be lighter than a feather

  • I'd like to see it with hair to hair collisions on.

  • @IndignantSkeptic haha, that would be so unimaginably complex to render in real time...

  • looks like underwater xD

  • While games are about gameplay there is no need to not advance their graphics to the point where hair like this is possible in games, as well as machines that can run them.

  • Awesome! But a game is about the game itself and not just about how a character looks! I mean a character can look so alive and yet the game to be pure boring crap! Visuals do not make a game great and that is what nVidia fails to understand!

  • @dangrievousreturns Of course Nvidia is gonna promote graphics, they make GPUs!! I do understand what you mean, but graphic tech also needs to advance.

  • Now let's see it running with multiple characters in changing lighting conditions with realtime shadows in outdoor scenes on consumer hardware coming out this year.

  • ...WOW...but too wavy

  • Aweeeesome hair, looks realistic, i've hoped that you put a link to download that hair

  • this is beautiful but there's nothing natural here

hair don't move like this, they seem to light like they have no weight at all

  • it's like inside water...

  • and thats how they make all those shampoo adverts...

  • @maV4a1 Of course, you really think a woman will actually waste their money on animations? You can also tell because on Dove you see a bit of grey in the hair, if you look real close!

  • it looks very realistic for underwater hair physics.

  • I want that for Sims!!!

  • Looks like a wig.

    Try again.

  • realistic hair?

    i'd say final fantasy-ish hair

  • Now if only we had the "realistic" part.

There seems to be a lack of gravity and friction here.

  • her hair went through her nose :x

  • well ppl with low end gaming cpu's are now fucked...... the video memory (Vram) it will take to emulate that realism...im not complaining my pc runs new games good but do this with every character, lets say a beatem up platformer wich has on average 3-10 char. on screen during fights, then include the enviorment, full body movements etc.. i dnt think it will be used so heavly yet in pc gaming consel maybe but lol this future must be far off.. but its cool to see.

  • Alice Madness Returns is pretty great exemple of realistic Hair simulation in a video game !

  • Alice Madness Return! :D

  • It's a lot nicer than that injection-molded, action figure hair so many games are plagued with.

  • yeaha but imagine if all characters in lets say wow would have hair this much detailed, the servers would explode out of laggz.

  • @Zharkan16 You know that thats its user side and not server side?

  • It'd be more realistic if it went faster. :)

Otherwise it sort of looks like the hair is under water.

  • So that's how they do those shampoo commercials.

  • Реализм в играх никому не нужен, кончай пиздеть, пиндосское уёбище. Алсо наличие этой нуйни на прилавках не означает наличие её в домах игрунов в игры.

  • Alice madness return, best video game character hair style ever created yet.

    (sry for bad english)

  • And yet we still claim that Crysis had "amazing graphics". I guess everything is relative.. :O

  • Because you're worth it!

  • name of software use ?

  • What did you use to make this ? Is it some Nvidia thing ?

  • HAHAHA

  • It looks superb, can't deny that. However, it's not realistic. It kind of looks like super flowy anime hair physics applied to individual strands. Real hair whips about like crazy. It's also nowhere near that smooth and fluid in its movements.

Not dissing the aesthetics, though. Looks pretty damn sweet. In fact, I'd prefer this to realism. I get to experience the pitfalls of unbound long hair flowing in the wind nearly every day of my life. This is much easier.

  • wow thats good

  • it sucks...

  • PS4 & XBOX720 better have realistic looking & moving hair like this or i will be mad

  • @vertigoboy75i

um they wont, and even if they did it would probably be for like the main character and thats it, unless they want the consoles to explode

  • It would look realistic if it didn't look like it was underwater

  • this is interesting.

  • Why does the hair fall back into the same original shape, and not into a new form like real hair would?

  • Sims 4 must have that :P

  • this demo is almost 2 years old, where are the games that uses this?

  • @tipsy3T All the developers that used the 400 series GPU's burnt their studios down.

  • I like pretending shes bobbing her head around like a sassy black woman. It really adds to the experience.

  • Admittedly this is amazing compared to hair on game characters now, they just need to improve the simulation. It seems to slow and loose.

  • C'est tout simplement impressionnant ! Quoi que je ne puisse croire que les cheveux fassent des vagues à chaque mouvement.

  • I want to call BS. That is real hair. lol

  • that's very... unrealistic.

  • headbang next time you make a video of this :)

  • looks sexy! sweet

  • It looks great i think and nice movement of hair , but its like they forgot the hairs own weight on itself.. thats why real hair doesnt flow that much..

  • I was hoping the hair itself would look more realistic. It looks like a bunch of strands that aren't human hair.

  • In the future my gaming friends....In the future....

  • looks more like its underwater or in slow mo.

  • take this hair for a game with 3 main characters and 100 npcs and your pc will burn :D

  • @5555DaftPunk5555 easy solution: one GPU per rendered game asset ;)

  • Tho i might not be tat realistic,I still want to have tat hair .

  • but that wasn't real time !!!

  • Exorcist?

  • The motion of the hair can be best used on an underwater sequence or scenario.. Therefore it won't look exaggerated.. Just an opinion from a novice.. :P

  • They always exaggerate the motion, ie. giving the hair too much volume / bounce / flow.

  • THe hair is way way to bouncy and weird looking.

  • this should me the music video for ``i whip my hair!``

  • ohkay... i was considering upgrating my gpu to gtx570... so simulated hair needs 300+ euro hw.... man....

  • @mingiasi at this point in time, sure.. but it'll get a lot easier to do in the near future

  • It's a shame that game developers don't have that kind of passion any more.

  • It looks good but real hair is a bit less flow-y.

  • @angelsxdontxkillx don't complain, this is a huge step in technology.

  • @angelsxdontxkillx I think the problem is with the gravity... too slow

  • @angelsxdontxkillx You're right, maybe it would be better with less weight on the extremities, so that with the wind it gets more messy

  • @angelsxdontxkillx It's a tech demo. Leave it to the designers and such to tweak the settings and get it looking right for an actual character.

  • @angelsxdontxkillx unless its in water

  • i sence a future game creator!

  • And how much exactly will it tear down the performance of a game when a few dozen are walking around like that, each being simulated..

  • When they invent hair that gets tangled with itself, then it'll be "realistic." ;P

  • Clipping on her nose, right at the fadeout haha.

  • im too sexy for my hair...too sexy for my hair it hurts

  • I want to do this in maya.

  • It's amazing how our generation is going to go from playing NES to photo-realistic gaming, the technology revolution is probably the coolest time to be alive in all of human history.

  • is this a software in the video or just a demo of hair

  • @NeroDeamon you may find similar tech demos at nvidia website.

    But for Nvidia GPUs only.

  • @murtisoft so its not a software where u can make hair for ur models right??

  • @NeroDeamon no its not. Just a tech demo only focusing on hair.

  • Can't wait till future games have shit like this!!!

  • It'll be realistic when it simulates the half-hour spent teasing all the tangles out of a wind-blown mane.

  • Great, now let's see some headbanging. :D

  • you would need all the power of the 480 just to render the hair....so we still need years to build this into video games.

  • @1Guug Kind of, but don't think it's gonna take too long

  • Amazing, outright awesomeness

  • GOLDEN SONIC AT 0:52

  • It moves too slow. something as simple as that gives it away.

  • what software is used can some plzzzz tell me i willl be very thankful

  • Final Fantasy!!

  • Lol... I enjoy watching her hair... but :3 yeah kewl :D

  • Damn Nature u scary

  • looks like she is in space XD

  • look like underwater

  • 'realistic' ah, no I have hair of a similar length and it reacts nothing like that, unless I was in a hurricane zone or something.

  • @qwedsa87 of course it doesn't react like that. You aren't a computer program being put through tests.

  • the hair reminds me of Axl Rose's hair from the welcome to the jungle music video at the begining!
