That's pretty amazing. As an animator, I'd cum in my pants if I could make a character with hair that good. Hair is incredibly difficult, even in animation. I just have a GTS 450. I hope it isn't already time to upgrade...
this has been around forever, the hair simulation that is shown here can be done in maya or 3d studio max, those programs have been able to do this for a decade but this video is explaining that we will see this in realtime with the next generation of gamesystems because they will use dx11, but in maya or max you can render the frames 1 at a time
I see things like this get demoed, but almost never used. Same story every time; A few games come out with new hardware in mind, showcasing features, something very conspicuously rather than subtly (HEY, LOOKIE AT MY NEW TRICKS), but in the end these features are ignored in favor of some shoddy engine any given company is fixated on using.
I've seen this happening since the old VooDoo days, and in all these years it's never changed. Makes me just a little mad.... and yeah, hair's floaty.
The question is not if you can simulate the hare. The question is if you can simulate it in a full blown scene with millions of polygons to render, full shaded textures with parallax mapping, normal mapping and so on, and have 20-30 characters on screen. The simulation now looks on slow-mo and that's not even a true hardcore test of the hardware.
@TacticProductionz but that makes to much common sense it cant be done. This is how it seems 3d software developers think. they can have problems in there software for many versions and never do anything about it.
@lylatfox4 you dont know that yet. besides theres a rumor that says xbox720 will be 5 times more powerful than xbox360. if that rumor was true then i would expect realistic hair like this.
Amazing detail! The simulation manages to capture almost every instance of realism in the interaction between INDIVIDUAL strands, making it nearly PERFECT! This...is TRUE innovation!....and then it goes through her nose. -_-
It'd be interesting for the day when they are able to achieve such a realism for the graphics that we wouldn't be able to tell the difference from the real thing, but then I like the surreal and uncanny feeling that graphics offer. Just knowing it is close to perfection is enough for me. After all, I think things would get very complicated if we weren't able to tell the real from the graphically generated.
@nianicole824 well depending on the method on which they did the hair it would be between 5000(spline hair, then proxies) - 12500 polygons(hair/fur modifer) for the hair, about 600(baked poly)-6000(full model + turbosmooth) for the person so low to high estimate would be 5600 - 18500 polys, an average videogame (rage/borderlands/mw3) would run from 750,000 polygons - 1.5m polys per second.
if we start to talk like crysis 2, anywhere from 1m to around 2.5m (highest setting) per second
@aznsorawarrior thats not including physics engine, since the engine is pure mathematics and calculates per polygon and variable force and in a typical game it would be between 1000-10,000 particle per second would be around 2.3 m calcs per sec.
after that lighting, animation, etc.
the calculations per min for the gtx 580 is around ~30 million calculations per second. meaning that if including everything you have barely enough for around 10 characters on the screen w/ max settings.
@nianicole824 it would. but the difference is that movies can't use things like this software. its more for gaming. Because gaming is dynamic, with movies its simply static with a set animation. when it comes to gaming/movies. gaming has a set number of calcs it can do. with movies, there isn't a extreme high bound. you can have over 5 million actions going on and still render it out. question is how long do you want to wait.
the higher the number in a movie, the slower it renders out.
@nianicole824 so for example, the 10 minute intro to a video game? that 10 min intro took 120+ hours to model/animate/create and about 3+ days to render out.
with this technology, they can make better games but until gpus are uber strong/fast, we won't notice it in a lot of games. quantity v quality. for quantity, it makes it more fast pace, quality looks really pretty. depends on the game designer. most games tend to go quality and static environments. meaning less stuff to process.
it moves realistically to a degree, it could just be showcasing but it looks like the hair is just a constant state of slow motion or like maggosh said, like its underwater
While games are about gameplay there is no need to not advance their graphics to the point where hair like this is possible in games, as well as machines that can run them.
Awesome! But a game is about the game itself and not just about how a character looks! I mean a character can look so alive and yet the game to be pure boring crap! Visuals do not make a game great and that is what nVidia fails to understand!
@dangrievousreturns Of course Nvidia is gonna promote graphics, they make GPUs!! I do understand what you mean, but graphic tech also needs to advance.
Now let's see it running with multiple characters in changing lighting conditions with realtime shadows in outdoor scenes on consumer hardware coming out this year.
@maV4a1 Of course, you really think a woman will actually waste their money on animations? You can also tell because on Dove you see a bit of grey in the hair, if you look real close!
well ppl with low end gaming cpu's are now fucked...... the video memory (Vram) it will take to emulate that realism...im not complaining my pc runs new games good but do this with every character, lets say a beatem up platformer wich has on average 3-10 char. on screen during fights, then include the enviorment, full body movements etc.. i dnt think it will be used so heavly yet in pc gaming consel maybe but lol this future must be far off.. but its cool to see.
Реализм в играх никому не нужен, кончай пиздеть, пиндосское уёбище. Алсо наличие этой нуйни на прилавках не означает наличие её в домах игрунов в игры.
It looks superb, can't deny that. However, it's not realistic. It kind of looks like super flowy anime hair physics applied to individual strands. Real hair whips about like crazy. It's also nowhere near that smooth and fluid in its movements.
Not dissing the aesthetics, though. Looks pretty damn sweet. In fact, I'd prefer this to realism. I get to experience the pitfalls of unbound long hair flowing in the wind nearly every day of my life. This is much easier.
It looks great i think and nice movement of hair , but its like they forgot the hairs own weight on itself.. thats why real hair doesnt flow that much..
The motion of the hair can be best used on an underwater sequence or scenario.. Therefore it won't look exaggerated.. Just an opinion from a novice.. :P
It's amazing how our generation is going to go from playing NES to photo-realistic gaming, the technology revolution is probably the coolest time to be alive in all of human history.

The weird effect you people see is not due the low gravity effect, but because of the lack of strands inter-collision.
If you pay attention you´ll see how the strands actually interpenetrate among eachother, and that makes the weird effect.
That´s not ingravity but immateriality.
