Samus is the only character (besides Marth) who I can play well now in Melee, after switching to Brawl +, simply cuz of her fighting style. Slower, heavily reliant on spacing and projectiles.
Darell seems like one of those REALLY smart players that just fall apart against super fast, technical players. Probably better off as a coach than an actual player.
Maybe that's just Samus players in general. All samus players seem really smart but you don't see them do well in tourney... :(
Samus' moveset is an entire mindgame. However, without her space she gets RAPED. Hence why aggressive Foxes like Lovage do so well. Samus is hard to get momentum with, but once she has it, there's no stopping her.
Darrell wasn't falling apart, it's just Lovage was picking at Samus' biggest weakness.
Samus actually can destroy people who try to pressure her. The matchup is basically like playing Ryu in SF4. If they approach from the air you can space your heavy kick (Nair) you can Hadouken camp (Missle) and if they give you too much shield pressure you can Shoryuken or Hurricane Kick out (Up-B, Down Smash). You do have to give yourself space, but when they get in all hope isn't lost. Samus is one of the only characters that's extremely zoning inclined in Melee.
I see what you're trying to say... yes d-smash and up-b are good options for defending against hyperaggressive opponents, they are pretty much her only options, and they are relatively slow and risky. Samus' grab sucks, so she can't shield grab effectively, if her up-b misses she gets punished with up-air, and trying to drop your shield and dsmash would be countered by a shine.
I'm not saying Samus can't handle pressure, just she's setup for spacing.

Samus players HAVE to be smart. She's a pretty unorthodox character, and has a lot of options. Takes a good head to know when to use what...

She's unorthodox in that she's bad.
