It's rather simplistic to believe that an atheist is incapable or in some way unqualified to appreciate the music of Bach, or a sculpture by Michelangelo, or a Gothic cathedral. Some of the greatest and most spiritual music has been written by atheists (Brahms' German Requiem) and some of the worst by believers. It is a question of aesthetic and human values which are expressed in the art form, not of belief.
I wonder why you atheisits don't leave us alone with our sacred music! Go listen to your metal rock and other demonic types of music and leave us to enjoy our music and our faith in peace! This music is a shrine of faith, and no one can really understand it without believing in its cause and meaning.
@bbstenornl yep, I also think too fast, but she didn't set the tempo, doesn't mean the other singers do a better job just because a more organic tempo was established by their conductor I think.
@GBADCD YOU SAID IT! Jesus was a fictional character that one can believe in - or not. Not so Bach. He was there - for real. Pure genius. Yet born out of this flesh.
@NYCBG There is no denying that Jesus existed and was crucified... there are historical records. Whether or not He is the Saviour of all mankind is where religions differ.
@Machdelu Just WHICH "historical records" are you referring to (Gospels notwithstanding, of course)?
Believe me, I am not out here to quarrel but to LEARN. That is, I would really appreciate any scholarly reference that supports your original point. Many thanks!
This is true! Without his father and mother, is not there Bach. Nevertheless you are mistaken! Because without God Bach would be without parents. Similarly there could be without God you, me or our parents.
They must be referring to the unexpected harmony at about 0:57. The passage modulates (I think) from f# minor to g minor -- very striking in the context of Bach's style.
Yes! After a rest in the dominant c# of f#, the third e# being given to the voice part, comes a chord which can be taken to have the function of domimant of the dominant of f# with fundamental tone g# ommited and altered ninth c on the bass; after the voice touches a high e note, the d# is treated enharmonically as e-flat in the voice part, which then drops to d, the fifth of g-minor, the altered ninth in the bass resolving to the third b-flat of g. Note e#,e+8,d#=e-flat,d in the voice part.
Aria - Alto
Können Tränen meiner Wangen
Nichts erlangen,
O, so nehmt mein Herz hinein!
Aber laßt es bei den Fluten,
Wenn die Wunden milde bluten,
Auch die Opferschale sein!

1:06 Können Tränen meiner Wangen: she sings it so fast! Way too fast to my taste.
Listen to Andreas Scholl or Anne Sofie von Otter. Much better :-)

That's what I thought too, when I heard this piece the first time.....a bit odd, comparing to the rest of Bach's recitatives.
