  • Aria - Alto

    Können Tränen meiner Wangen

    Nichts erlangen,

O, so nehmt mein Herz hinein!

Aber laßt es bei den Fluten,

    Wenn die Wunden milde bluten,

    Auch die Opferschale sein!

  • Darwin, anyone?

  • It's rather simplistic to believe that an atheist is incapable or in some way unqualified to appreciate the music of Bach, or a sculpture by Michelangelo, or a Gothic cathedral. Some of the greatest and most spiritual music has been written by atheists (Brahms' German Requiem) and some of the worst by believers. It is a question of aesthetic and human values which are expressed in the art form, not of belief.

  • I wonder why you atheisits don't leave us alone with our sacred music! Go listen to your metal rock and other demonic types of music and leave us to enjoy our music and our faith in peace! This music is a shrine of faith, and no one can really understand it without believing in its cause and meaning.

  • DE nummering klopt echt niet, helemaal niet.

  • I so wanna sing opera now! or sing choral what have you. these matthaeus are so addicting... i want to see this live so over whelming!

  • The last choral was used by Bach many tiems during the passion , but the composer was hans leo hassler, a german music of the renaissance period.

  • 1:06 Können Tränen meiner Wangen: she sings it so fast! Way too fast to my taste.

Listen to Andreas Scholl or Anne Sofie von Otter. Much better :-)

  • @bbstenornl yep, I also think too fast, but she didn't set the tempo, doesn't mean the other singers do a better job just because a more organic tempo was established by their conductor I think.

  • I think the alto has been casted perfectly. She's amazing.

  • I should take a picture of my skin to show you how I got goosebumps during the Choral "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden"... amazing

  • The last choral is just so amazing. There arent words to describe it. Bach really brings across the suffering of Christ.

  • beautiful !! havent words to describe how much i like this composition. Take care and thanks for sharing*

    ~baroque is my life~

  • does that lute have to be that long???

  • it's a theorbo. It has some more bass strings.

  • #54--I almost cry every time. Thank you Jesus.

  • Thank you BACH, not Jesus.

  • that is absolutely not what I said, or meant

  • @GBADCD YOU SAID IT! Jesus was a fictional character that one can believe in - or not. Not so Bach. He was there - for real. Pure genius. Yet born out of this flesh.

    Mystery.

  • @NYCBG There is no denying that Jesus existed and was crucified... there are historical records. Whether or not He is the Saviour of all mankind is where religions differ.

  • @Machdelu Just WHICH "historical records" are you referring to (Gospels notwithstanding, of course)?

Believe me, I am not out here to quarrel but to LEARN. That is, I would really appreciate any scholarly reference that supports your original point. Many thanks!

  • @Machdelu

I would too like to know which historical records even MENTION jesus.

  • @GBADCD

Without Jesus would give no Bach!

  • @pebr70 You are mistaken. Without Johann Ambosius Bach, his father, and his mother, is not there J.S.Bach.

  • @GBADCD

As a matter of fact, thank you Hans Leo Hassler and Johann Crüger, not Bach.

  • @palicemful ??????? ------- As a matter of fact, thank you caveman, not Bach.

  • bach is definately the greatest, just listen...! thank you senhor bach, thank you!

  • Woorden schieten tekort

  • 51-one of the boldest modulations in Bach in the one-but-final measure.

  • That's what I thought too, when I heard this piece the first time.....a bit odd, comparing to the rest of Bach's recitatives.

  • Which moment, exactly (on the time counter)?

  • They must be referring to the unexpected harmony at about 0:57. The passage modulates (I think) from f# minor to g minor -- very striking in the context of Bach's style.

  • Yes! After a rest in the dominant c# of f#, the third e# being given to the voice part, comes a chord which can be taken to have the function of domimant of the dominant of f# with fundamental tone g# ommited and altered ninth c on the bass; after the voice touches a high e note, the d# is treated enharmonically as e-flat in the voice part, which then drops to d, the fifth of g-minor, the altered ninth in the bass resolving to the third b-flat of g. Note e#,e+8,d#=e-flat,d in the voice part.

  • Could you say it in normal language now too please? :O

  • 52- "Konnen Tranen meiner Wangen" VA DEMASIADO RÁPIDO para lo que dice, que tiene que ser delicado...

  • pienso que estoy de acuerdo con Usted . . .

  • Bach is pretty much the greatest composer ever.

  • certainly agreed, there.

  • If I were Jesus, I'd come down, pat J.S. on the back and tell him, I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!

  • Now you are pushing it...

  • ja, aber das ist sehr lustig . . .

  • Dignus est agnus.

  • "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" chorale is so beautiful! It starts at 7:53 for those who are seeking.

  • The mezzo's aria is a little bit fast, but beatuful

  • first view!!! interesting piece.
