Hi @martyzsongs ! I have a question... So, when i try to improvise a solo, there is nothing coming out of my head... No inspiration at all... What can i do? I try to think on something that makes me happy, or sad, or angry... But it just dont works... I love your guitar lessons! And i hope you will tell me some tips to get some inspiration.
Dude, I love your videos. You are so down to earth and You make mistakes!! That makes you seem more "human" and easier to relate to. Also you explain everything so its easy to under stand.
I have been playing for 20 years and was in a rut, and your videos helped me get over that hill. You have a great personality and a great vibe about you. Where you are not the most technical, blazing fast player in the world, I find your videos very enjoyable.
I am trying to branch out of playing simple minor pentatonic stuff and want to learn more about soloing and what not. If you are in Am and also using the CMaj as the relative major to Am, where does the G fit in that you shifted to?
@sneakerzzz414 Well I've been playing for a year now and when I first got the guitar I wouldn't want to play it but as I started hearing what cool stuff I can play, maybe 10-9 months ago I started practicing 3 hours every day,and it payed off cause now I can play this stuff from this video.I just reccommend for you to practice all that you know every day and you'll be good.Oh,and maybe try learning the easier pentatonic scales like the e minor or a minor pentatonic scales and power chords
@sneakerzzz414 I have both, though the first one I got was an acoustic but a few months ago I got an electric one, what about you?
I have to say electric is easier to play, but it's always better to start off with the harder type(acoustic) since the sound is a lot cleaner and when you start playing electric after acoustic it'll be a lot easier and you won't have much problems since you'll try to create a sound that's good as possible since you needed that in acoustic.
@sneakerzzz414 i learned from tabs book long before the internet.now you tube has LOADS of lessons i wish id had when i was learning, check out justin sandercoe too, great site and all free.a teacher is always the quickest way to learn but thatas expensive, internets the best next option.good luck, stick at it and always look at what youve achieved, not what you cant yet play
@sneakerzzz414 Yeah that's the thing I forgot to mention,I learned it all on my own,in the beginning I didn't know how to read tabs, but when I learned that I started playing these easy Nirvana songs with power chords and it made the skin on my fingers harden a lot and then I started watching videos, and still when I want to learn a song I always go to ultimate guitar and search for the tab of the song.I also use the Guitar pro program which is great cause you can hear what the tab sounds like.
@sneakerzzz414 well since now I'm 18 I started at 16,I was almost 17 so I count it like I started at 17 not 16,but the older you get it's harder to learn things since when you're young you kinda learn things fast and as you grow older it's harder to learn new things.
@vikonja121 i disagree, actually, if your minds sets at that idea you'll really have difficulties to learn as you get older, but if you rest your mind assured that you WILL be capable to learn just as you want, it will be possible, believe me, theres no sort of excuse except that you are lazier than you were back in the old days
@sneakerzzz414 1 year ago i bought an acoustic (Martin DCX bla bla) and approximately 2 months i just surfed around youtube and did some basic excercises which i learned from Justin Sandercoe's website. (His website is more systematic than others)
Then i met Marty here and there, everywhere on youtube :)
After i learned Pentatonic Minor position 1, marty's videos started to make sense and liked his kind of humour, his groovy/funky style (and his hat) :)
@sneakerzzz414 For about half an hour daily excercise (Some days four hours) i can jam with my buddies in most of the keys using pentatonic major, minor and with the ideas i got from Mary/Justin/Andrew Asson (His theory side is great)
I'm 34 years old. when i was a teenager i played drums (didnt take any lesson, got a drum set at home) but i always wanted to be able to play some blues licks on the guitar. I didnt focus on playing songs, i cant play any now :) Improvising is more satisfying.
@sneakerzzz414 well it's not really about you know picking up the guitar practise for 2 hours, leave the guitar and not play it anymore. What I would do I would play it more times in the day when I'd have free time and was bored for about half an hour, once for 20 minutes, the other time 50 minutes and when you would combine it it would turn out about like 3 hours, even though I wasn't realising it.
@sneakerzzz414 And i suggest that you buy an electric also. I bought one about 3 months ago (9 months after i bought acoustic).
I recommend Fender Strat Mexican 70's classic. It's sound is cool for especially blues/funk.
Acoustic and electric ones are basically two different instruments. According to my experience, i suggest that you should have both. (But do finger excercises on acoustic for more strength)
@vikonja121 lol. . . i do that, too!! i play like several times a day for just 10 minutes or so. btw, sorry for late reply. . . school is just killing me!! =)
@x7Reborn yep, i want this so bad. lol. . . i already have calluses and they're pretty useful coz it doesnt hurt when i play guitar. i wont give up and i will continue to push through so i can get to where i want to be. ^_^ Thanks a lot for the advice dude. . . its the best one that i've received. =) by the way, im a girl ^_^
@dannnn94 because! well actually if you really want to learn fast then go with the lesson but youtube is always a cheaper alternative... for me i havent got enough time for a lesson because of my sched... darn..
Another great lesson, Marty. Thanks so much for sharing as much as you do. Y'know, notwithstanding your talent for playing, it was your teaching style that motivated me to buy your Blues DVD set. Good stuff.

hey guys. . .im 14 and i really want to play guitar sooo bad i wanna be good at it. problem is that my parents dnt support me. I dnt take lessons but im trying to learn through chord charts and youtube vids. i kinda find it hard to do it on my own without any interaction with the person teaching me. ive only been doing it for a year but im still not good at it.now i feel like i wanna give it all up. any advice?
Try starting off with some easier tunes (i'm sure you can find a lot on marty's channel) to improve your hand navigation on the fretboard , and no matter what anybody says , you can get good ;).
P.S - try find walk this way on this guy's channel , i was really surprised at how easy it was to play this great song
Well I might not be the best person to be giving advice seeing as how I've only been playing about a year myself but, you're not making any rookie mistakes like not tuning you're guitar correctly, or holding the guitar in a left handed position when you're right handed? I don't mean to insult you're intelligence or anything just sometime beginners make those mistakes. Also maybe you're playing stuff that's just in all honestly way far out of you're skill level. If the problem
@HitokiriBattosai76 that's the exact mistake that i've been doing. i try to take on songs that are not on my skill level. i just realized that now.. . lol. .. thanks for the advice dude. although i dont make stupid mistakes like what you mentioned...hehe..i can still play some songs. maybe i just try so hard to be good at it that i forget to start from the easy ones. ... thank u sooo much. . . =)
I know it's a little late for a response, but anyway It's no problem at all. A good place to start off is power chords, there pretty simple and you can make a lot of different sounds with them. @sneakerzzz414 It was hard for me to at first, but you're fingers should get used to it eventually. Soon you'll be able to slide some of those power chord positions all up and down the fret board.
