In Edmonton Canada we also have a 6station downtown underground subway but surface track and more stations away from downtown with the odd short tunnels.
elevator & patrick: you're BOTH right. pittsburgh's light rail runs in a subway downtown only and tunnels under mt. washington and mt. lebanon, and soon under the allegheny river. elsewhere, it runs on the surface and over bridges. don't confuse the place (subway) with the kind of equipment used. some subways have heavy rail trains, e.g., chicago, nyc, atlanta, san francisco. some run light rail vehicles, e.g. newark and p'burgh. still others run both kinds, e.g. philly, boston, l.a.
I've been on Frisco's subway and it's different from light rail. Los Angeles also has a heavy rail subway but also an underground light rail line through the downtown part of the city. Here's what I know is the difference between light and heavy rail. Light rail gets it's electrical power from overhead catinary wires and heavy rail from a third rail that is electrically charged.
no its a subway it goes all thw way to south hills north hills east hills and the airport which is west hills but there is a short distance between wood street and gateway station so yes it is not a light rail its a real subway
To elevatortimes
The subway is the tunnel or tube the train runs through, not the train its self.

@patricknedz
It's a "light rail" that goes into a subway. A "subway" is the tunnel. The real definition for a "subway" is "rapid transit".
