"Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free"
"The dutch speak 4 languages(even whilst stoned)." not really.. the majority does speak english aswell though and some a little bit of french and german.. im sure belgians and swiss are more polylinguistic
I'm from the U.S. I wish it was common to teach children two languages because now, the only chance I have of acquiring a second language at the age of 19 is Rosetta Stone. Ha. Most schools require us to take only two years of a foreign language before graduation but we're limited to Spanish and French. And even then, once you've hit your teenage years, two years of a foreign language isn't enough to become fluent. :(
@kanetaker2390 - Better yet, don't listen to that piece of shit Bollywood rip-off. They claimed they wrote it even though it was clearly stolen from Afro-celt.
Actually, the Brits are not arguing over languages. We have come to understand the richness of diversity. In some schools there are more than 30 home languages spoken by the students. The home languages of the British Isles, are beginning to be valued. Nobody is arguing against learning a different language.
@richardwilson1234 .The home language of the British Isles??? what an imperial and outdated figure of speach, Just where are the british isles???? I think you mean the Celtic countries.
a language once oppressed by the english....so beautiful.
I find it difficult to understand why the brits r arguing about what language to learn. I come from India & learnt 4 languages in school. The dutch speak 4 languages(even whilst stoned). It does one no harm to learn different languages. also makes sense to me if welsh was taught in wales.
I agree but it is not the dutch that seak four languages. They even have a hard time speaking english. If you want multilinguists you have a much better chance in finding them in Belgium or Switzerland. In Belgium we speak dutch, french and german. Most of us know english or spanish too. And we have access to dutch weed too ;-)
@cgmorvx1 well, you see - I lived in Yugoslavia and I was Yugoslav of course but Serb too. Main language was serbocroatian and now, we all have 6 languages and everything is almost same and - completely useless, lol. so, british problem is not a big deal, believe me. :))
@cgmorvx1 woah woah...you think the brits are bad....been to America lately...some of our parents go absolutely ape-shit when they find out their children are learning spanish..Like crazy, bat our of hell, redneck insane.
I first came across this song when I was working in the isle of Shetland. I stayed there for 2 months and lived in a town of 23. It was one of the most amazing times I've had in my life. This music belong in the halls of legends.
I agree with you LDNLeon, Welsh is very musical and Tolkien famously said it was a great inspiration for his creation of the 'Elvish' language which is renown for its beauty. Those who hear it as ugly usualy listen to it with a political notion, Schragemusik, are you of German decent btw ?
Welsh along with Gaelic (Scots and Irish), Cornish, Manx and Breton is one of the few original languages (and the strongest) that survives in Britain. It's age demands respect and many from the places where Celtic langauges are spoken say they feel trapped speaking English which is unnatural to them, therefore for those who feel this way it is important to give them the option of learning so that they can express themselves properly.
Diversity makes this world so wonderful and Britain and Ireland gains a lot of tourism due its its projection of celticism and therfore money must be invested in the most important aspect of any culture which is language.
nah we just call it Irish, and yep there's a difference between Gaeilge(Irish), Gàidhlig(Scots Gaelic), & Gaelg(Manx), but they all are forms of Ancient Irish lol
Like it or not, for reasons good or bad (and I actually think 'bad') Welsh has BECOME a foreign language to the vast majority. And most people (in the South) do NOT disagree with me. At long last people are beginning to question the money being pumped into keeping this dead language artificially alive. Its life is being extended only by political dictat which is, in turn, only being issued for fear of extremists.
The "vast" majority? It's spoken by 600,000 people in Wales. Also, what are you blabbering about "for reasons good or bad"? Elaborate?
Language is part of peoples cultural heritage, culture can be lost in translation, so can music, art, poetry and writing. You haven't put forth any argument other than "I don't like the sound of it". Explain to me why any language should be erased.
That figure is bunk. My daughter and her friends all claim to 'speak Welsh' because they know a word or two - a word or two that was forced onto them (at the expense of more useful lessons) in school. I don't think the language should be erased. It should simply NOT be foisted (at great expense) on those of us who want nothing to do with it.
(cont) Reasons good or bad: the English thought it good to rid us of the Welsh language; I disagree. But it was done. I see no point in trying to undo that action. For art and culture and for those who LIVE WITH the language, fine. As a useful communication tool, forget it. When a language needs a committee to dream up new words, then it might as well be dead.
The figures might be skewed, but when I visited North Wales the language was used at an every day level, in my opinion it should be taught as the first language. Maybe in the heavily anglicised areas it's not necessary - but learning two languages has it's own benefits; such as increased "intelligence", increased learnability and increased learnability of other languages.
It's also worth noting that the English obviously did not rid the Welsh of their language if it is spoken by a good many of
of the population and even by others outside of the region.
Regardless, the notion of purging a language of a people is a typified example of oppression and you as a Welshman (or someone living in Wales) protesting when you see it being spoken more, harder than the oppressors of old, is frankly depressing.
In the North and parts of the West, Welsh is used. Fine. In the South it is not used and not wanted. I am at least fifth generation Welsh but my language is English. For at least three generations, the language of my family has been English. For me, the Welsh language remains ugly and utterly unmusical. As a means of communication its time has passed. I agree with children learning a second language but this should be of use in the wider world - not just around Aberystwth.
I have been to Scotland a few times now, as I live in Australia. My G.Grandparents emigrated in 1866 on the Netherby, and were shipwrecked on King Island. I have been playing this sort of music myself ( Bodhr'an and Harmonica's )for 35 years. I have all there CD's and more.
You have done a great job with this video, and I have placed it in my favourites.
I have just completed my very first 2 video's on You Tube,.
So I have taken notes on what you have done with this one.
Black Head, the Burren -Co. Clare, Ireland on a crispy, frosty morning with good friends and a joint with this tune playing in the background - I can't think of anything better :)
ya, it stated Dununya, but both in Iranian and the Ariyan languages, Donya/Duniya/etc. mean world, strange that the African language had it and not the Celtic, maybe Dununya means something else in African
What a ROTTEN thing to say! In case you didn't know, the African-American and Celtic-American communities have a long history together. They have influenced each other a lot (think black tap dance). Early Irish immigrants felt like they could relate to American blacks.
Also, both forms of music are based on the Pentatonic scale (think "Amazing Grace") and use great harmonies.
I love this album, I dragged it around so much frm hs to car before I got an ipod I bought 3 copies of it! Were going to see their show at Disney but it was cancelled b/c of 9-11 bummer then got tickets for family to go so Dave Mathews Band & Afrocelt played with them so bummed again, one of these days we will catch up with them in person to feel that awesome rhythm & Soul. Beautiful truly ascendent trance music, rhythm is the roots I'm a whitegirl & not much moves me but Afrocelt always does.
Feels good that people are making music with languages that are almost lost !
On a personal note, feeling ashamed. Without due credit to the original, this beautiful track is blatantly copied for a Bollywood movie (Kambakht Ishq from the film 'Pyar Tune Kya Kiya') :(
I love afrocelt, they chill me out when im stressed. My dad got me into them years ago, ive all 3 albums, im sure they've more, i just havn't heard of them.
2nd albums my favourite. Africian/Irish music go well together :)

Been round the sun 45 times now, and this is one of my all-time favourite bands, although 'musical collective' might be a better term.
I just stumbled on this group and fell in love with the fresh sound they have produced. At 62 yrs of age I have heard all -kinds- of music over the years..from Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix and on up...but I really like the vibrancy in this music of cross cultures..a new evolution to sound.
The AfroCelt Sound System are a perfect example of the creative force that can come about when two cultures put aside difference and share the beauty of one another. There should be more cross-polination such as this.
I have just stumbled across your path, I'm amazed it has taken me this long! Amazingly I have many celtic and other types of ethnic music, somehow it wasn't time for me until now. Your music is so beautiful. You are now at the top with my favourites ie: Loreena Mckinnet,Enya,Yanni,Iz,Dead can dance, deep forest. etc... Thank you!
I don't know what song you are looking for. Here is the list of all the songs of the album "Release" Afro Celt Sound System - Volume 2 Release 01 - Release 02 - Lovers Of Light 03 - Eireann 04 - Urban Aire 05 - Big Cat 06 - Even In My Dreams 07 - Amber 08 - Hypnotica 09 - Riding The Waves 10 - I Think Of... 11 - Release It (Instrumental)

Peace.....

I have just stumbled across your path, I'm amazed it has taken me this long! Amazingly I have many celtic and other types of ethnic music, somehow it wasn't time for me until now. Your music is so beautiful. You are now at the top with my favourites ie: Loreena Mckinnet,Enya,Yanni,Iz,Dead can dance, deep forest. etc... Thank you!
