  • Well done vid. Excellent.

    Most forms of racing, be it 4 wheel, or 2 are over-regulated. There are places for open class racing which rewards ingenuity and engineering ideas. Over-regulation is what makes NASCAR so dreadful.

    Also, I'm not certain people lining the race lanes which have no barriers are as much victims as they are Darwinian experiments.

    I would love to see something like Gruppe B return with beastly 1000Hp engines and with modern transmission and engine management technology.

  • my dad watched once those cars in portugal, in the year i was born 1985, when i talked with him about group b rally cars, he said that those where real rally cars, today cars are nothing compared to group b...

  • and he's so right. group b cars were and still are the real rally cars

  • I agree, Group B were the real rally cars. However todays WRC cars are nearly as fast because the technology today is so much more advanced, meaning that even though they have less horsepower, they can still get a lot of speed out of less horsepower. Mind you, todays drivers have semi-automatic gear boxes, so they can keep their hands on the wheel. The group B drivers had to proper manual gear boxes, so they had to take their hands of the wheel at high speeds, sometimes while taking corners!

  • The sequential gearboxes have a stick/leaver, they're not allowed to have paddleboxes in rallying now if i'm right

  • yes they are allowed, but it would be stupid because now we all know that the machine is now faster then the human mind, in fact sequential gearboxes are faster than mnanual gearboxes, so it's easier for te pilote to drive, andit's faster, so i think teams that would not use that technology would be rapidly be ou of the game.. !

    Personally, I think with todays technology, and safety, that Group B cars would be easy enough, if you were to put 660BHP in a WRC car with about 700ft/lb of torque, it would cause the same sensation as the Group B cars did back then. I know atm, money is tight but when the recession ends I think it's a good idea. Like, Henri Toivonen drove a much faster car than Latvala, and their big crashes were about the same, only Latvala's car was much safer than Henri's.

  • I witnessed the derrangement that went through everyone that year here in Portugal. I remember Markku saying, about the Lancia, that it was a "car that had no straights, ounce you're out of a corner you're into the next one". I cried when I heard Henri had died. Never again will there be such power on an common road.

    specially rally

    and if i speak about rally. everybody thinks about the group b. i'm just 15 years old. i've never saw them drive. but i've seen a lot of movies about those rally class. it was just fantastic. they were the monsters of the 80's. there were no other cars who were better than them. it was just magnifisant. i dream every day that group b joins back into rally. but i think that thats never gonna happen.

    the voices tht start bout 3mins in say tht the lancia driven by HENRI TOIVONEN had crashed and exploded, the drivers were still in the car and to stop all other cars, also a different voice says for all martini lancia's are to return to service

    the car went of the road going to fast into a turn, understeered and hit the trees, then it jst exploded, the only thing left was a crumpled chasis

  • There's no defining reason for his accident, though it's more or less proved that understeer was obsolete.

  • Yes! there is lots of ppl who likes to see group B back! Croud control needs atenttion, and what i like to see is the old sideways driving style. Its not the fastest way around corners but needs more skill and much more entertaimin for the croud. Driver needs to make the car, not computers and all that shit.

  • I have heard that when group B rally cars were competing against formula one car in F1-track, that those, f1 and group b cars, were quite equal. bad english. I know...

  • On the same length a group b car was only 4 seconds slower. Mind you the group b car was on gravel and the F1 on a normal track.

    I would love a drive a group b car, though I would probably kill myself within 20 seconds

  • It's about when Henri "Henkka" Toivonen crashed his Lancia Turbo delta & burned to death in it. No one knows exactly what happened, but it ended group B. The car was nothing more then mangled and burned steel. It was as devastating a moment to group B fans as was the dead of Senna to F1 fans.

  • I worked in motorsport at the time I wasn't there but a friend was servicing for another team in the service area before the accident and the car was leaking avgas into the rear and Toivonen was so affected by the fumes he got into Markku Alen's car during the service believing it was his car ,the stage after that service was when the car exploded before leaving the road ,Lancia cheat(avgas),they should never of been allowed to leave the service area with fuel leaking into the car.

  • Oh yeah sorry. It's the radio contact between Tiziano Siviero (codriver of Biasion) on the spot where Henri crashed and the Lancia camp in Ajaccio. Siviero calling for a fire department cause Henri's car exploded. Fiorio asked if they where out of the car, but he couldn't tell. At the end they say, "Whole Lancia team, return to Ajaccio".

  • Listen mate, you're counting peanuts. In the turbo era fuel tank size and boost was restricted and mid race refuelling banned so it became a fuel economy championship. By the last season of turbo engines they ran only 2.5 Bar boost (down from 4 Bar) and 150 litre fuel tanks = about 850hp. They now run 900hp! Restrictions were phased in over 4 years, they didn't just kill the category on less than 12 months notice like with Group B.

  • Josti another great vid! i love them all...certainly a sad note on the loss of the great henri toivonen, it is impressive, as quoted before, that HT said that driving these cars was impossible.

    for any of the rally fans out there, do you know what were henri toivonen's racing numbers? besides the cursed number 4 with which he died?

  • Well, at that time, they raced with different numbers every Rally. Besides 4, his most famous are probably his winning numbers like 7 at the Monte Carlo, 6 at RAC '85 and 16 at RAC 1980. But If you want a list of all his starting numbers, I can pm it to you.

  • BTW my theory on why Gr B was banned so suddenly had more to do with Bernie Eccelstone and F1 being made to look pedestrian and loosing manufactures than how dangerous Gp B was. Drivers diw in F1 and the entire formula doesn't get banned! GrA almost killed rallying, and I'm sure that was the FIAs idea at the time.

  • Yes, FIA looked too much at F1 (Still does) and as a panic reaction, it banned Group B. Group A had a slow start yes, but it picked up in the early 90's.

  • Don't you think the FIA should put a limit of 300 Bhp on F1 cars also? Rally is restricted to the same power level as F3. In fact, it seems every formula OTHER than F1 has to run an air restrictor.

    The reason rally is limited to 300bhp is because they run in a surrounding that has none of the safety standards that are in F1.

  • It was pretty obvious at the time (1986) that F1 felt threatened! (Maybe ur 2 young 2 remember) They set up an FIA World Touring Car championship that was cancelled after just 1 year. Bernie's Brabham F1team built an Alfa Romeo (look up 164 procar on YouTube) V10 proto type demo car as a suggestion for a circuit racing 'silhouette' formula to rival Group B. (Bernie owned the global TV rights to F1). The FIA, who control both series, killed GpB and replaced with the equivalent to today's Gp N.

  • If you can tell me that what was done to slow F1 cars after Aytron Senna died (ah NOT MUCH) and what happened to Rallying after Henri Toivonen died are equal (what equated to busting Grand Prix cars down to F3 cars) I'd say you don't know what you're talking about Mate.

  • What an utter bullshit tsport100. Group B was banned and cars slowed down AND same happened to F1. The F1 cars were too fast and they were killing drivers left and right, FIA slowed down F1, just as with WRC.

  • You call 900hp F1 cars 'slowed down' do you? what a joke. They actually race with more HP now than in the Turbo era where-as Rally has half what the HP they had in Gp B. Other than engine capacity and a 19,000 Rpm limit, F1 is unlimited. They try to limit engine power by making the teams use them for 2 races... LOL what a joke.

  • They don't race with more horsepower now. Turbos were banned from F1 in 1989 as the cars became too fast for the tracks. The '80s are called the Turbo era in F1 and cars had up to 1400 bhp in qualifying trim. Now in V8 the have about 800bhp I think. Few years ago they were up to 950 bhp, but further rule changes have brought the horsepower figures down again.
