Sean Penn should take part in a revenge movie where he, as an undercover cop, went vigilante against the Irish Mafia, after an incident where his girlfriend who is also an undercover cop, was killed in the line of duty after their cover was blown.
reminds me abit of donny brasco, but give me this anyday i saw it for the first time before and was totally shocked at how good this movie was, brilliant film
the whole movie was really good until the final shootout in the bar that was complete bullshit i also think it would be better if he wasnt a cop, had no significance in the movie at all
@jimmycollins1234 I somewhat agree with the ending being awkward and unrealistic but everyone loves a good shootout. As for the cop thing, the movie would not be as multi-layered as it is seeing as how the major conflict behind Sean Penn's character is that his job is to put the people he grew up with (some of his best friends) in jail. I do agree it could have worked without the cop storyline but it just adds a little bit more to the movie.
I Finally got my copy of State of Grace on DVD. Got if from a blockbuster that was closing. YES!!! Finally.
Great acting performances by Sean Penn, Gary Oldman & Ed Harris did a good enough acting job not to kill it. Good acting by the supporting cast too. Great plot.
@Cobretti20001 the trailer is barley a minute and a half and they have that horrible U2 song playing with dialogue during the first 40 seconds. I don't think the voice over did a good job in telling you what the movie is about.
If your interested in the world of irish American criminals and the New York gangsters, The Westies. And the above subject matter, you should check out a short scene I wrote and performed on my page called A Westside Sentiment. If you like the above, you might like this too. And don’t forget to subscribe.
@Aidpagemoocher Its very loosely based. Oldman's Jackie Flannery was the most realistic fictional portrayal of a NYC West Side thug in the 80s. The two Westies characters in Sleepers did well too, but nothing like this unknown masterpiece ^^.
This film was awesome. Gary Oldman showed definitely the greatest and most impressive acting. Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Robin Wright were great too. Orion made brilliant but sooooooo underrated films
Oldman's greatest performance. He admits its his favorite role. He hung out at the bars with locals in Hell's Kitchen to prepare for this role - to get the accent, look, swagger, walk and talk of the NYC Irish Mob which is why it was done with such perfection. And if you notice hes legitimately drunk throughout the film.
This trailer is as exciting & revealing as the movie itself, which---although in many ways this rip-off of the real life Westies gang---was quite good, superbly acted, edge-of-your-seat, dramatic & compelling! I loved it, especially the rather slow motion, yet wild, shoot out at the very end, interspersed with these slow motion, yet vivid, clips from the Saint Patty's Day rolling down 5th Ave.!!!
Finally, ed harris creates a masteful performance; he's very convincing (without giving much away) as a morally corrupt boss and you just want him done with as you learn more about the character.
i just watched this..cannot recommend it more..its brilliant..the storyline is nothing particularly innovative, but the acting was marvelous. Based on his performance, i dont know how gary oldman isnt a badguy lunatic himself and the duo with sean penn is great to watch; the good thing is that penn isnt sucked into oldman's mad performance, there doesnt seem to be any out-doing of each other and penn is solid as hell.
It is interesting how when this movie came out, the actors, with the exception of Sean Penn, were still relatively unknown. Today, it is an all-star cast! They are all brilliant in this movie!
its a mixture of U2 songs, Exit, Red Hill mining town..off the Joshua Tree. The director of state of grace directed U2 rattle and Hum the movie. Hence the irish and music...
Sick movie right here.
