This was the last song my Son Billy Jervis heard before dying in a car crash 03/04/07 one Sunday morning on his way to play piano at his church. Billy received a full ride at the University of Cincy Conserv. of Music but he never knew he got accepted. Brad was one of his favorites... see billyjervis magic on youtube
The way Mehldau pulls music out of the piano is absolutely incredible, making me believe that the piano is not a percussive instrument. The man is a genius.
@ilwmb Interesting comment. I actually don't think its a mistake, either...in the sense that it wasn't played unintentionally. It may not have 'worked' but I don't think it was a mistake. He makes plenty of mistakes, though...live and on record. It's just that they often work. "If you don't make mistakes, you're not trying hard enough" (usually attributed to Miles Davis.)
@fantabenz: exactly. Nick lives. Mehldau resurrects. Amazing piece. Beyond music. Only Brad is able to do this. Many try, but all fail. Is the end beautiful, or what!
How does my post imply that the dissonance is a bad thing in the SLIGHTEST bit? Dissonance is dissonance; it cannot be pleasing in a physical sense. That is its very definition! But my post, which you and all of the other mouth-breathers could not read accurately, defends his choice of dissonance because of the sheer beauty that comes from its resolution. But of course, you and the others have to give my comment a negative rating because of your lack of reading comprehension.
FUUUUUUUUCK I hate beeing sick! :(

@bernie1111 i think its played as a passing note. it's intended articulation.. like Nick Drake's glissando while singing.

Nick has risen. St. Nick meets God Mehldau.
This is beautiful music. It's more than music.
Thanks Brad. I only wish it was available on a CD.
Along with My Favorite Things, live in France,
God bless.

Am I wrong or he makes a mistake at 1:15?
One of his best covers!
fantabenz 2 years ago
At 1.15 ..... I think you're right.
GiovanniGuitar 2 years ago 2
It's just a dissonance. It's hard to tell whether he intended it or not, but listen to his cover of Martha My Dear.
The dissonances are clearly intentional in that song, but because they are uncomfortable to listen to, can we call them mistakes?
iamlameduck 2 years ago
What is dissonances to one is pure harmony and sense to the other.
