COOL!! Wish there was sound to this. I was at the evening show of this & also his last evening one in 1970. To say the packed Astrodome was LOUD on either occasion just doesn't do justice to what was going on. So glad I got to see him. Twice,
I believe this show actually occured in 1971 and was one of four shows. The first was very poorly attended, something like 17,000 or so and Presley was depressed at the turnout. However, it was an early afternoon concert and a large crowd really wasn't expected... the following three shows in the stadium were, for the most part, sold out. He played to well over 150,000 people which is pretty amazing
Somebody can correct me if they have more accurate information.
@notredamehesamighty This is 1970 and he played six shows that were all sold out to around 300,000 people is what I have read but that may be a Colonel 'snow job' on retrospect.
Elvis was "alone"in athe center of a huge arena. No fancy lights, videos, fireworks dancing crows, you name it.
Just Presley his voice and music. Who the hell goes in front o 50,000 persons alone in this days???? In my mind only the great "Boss" Bruce Springsten.
Elvis was is and will be forever the greatest Rocker ever!
@Galoport Only because they didn't have the technology to put on a huge show. Decent sound systems were non existent at this time and there were no big venues built to accomodate musicians. Believe it or not the only speakers they were using are the ones you see on the stage and there were 50,000 people there. You would have been lucky to hear Elvis' voice and music at this show.
@swobet I read on "Elvis unseen archives" that nobody really knows the reason of why Elvis never went out of the US., but many say that when Elvis' World Tour was planned, it never came to an agreement because the Colonel didn't have a passport and he didnt want Elvis to go on his own, but Colonel all really wanted and cared about was money so...
Colonel Parker once said the reason Elvis didn't ever go on a world tour is because he didn't like performing outside. He doesn't seem to mind here. The colonel was frull of BS
@swobet that's nonsense. Elvis began his career playing outdoor venues. He never toured overseas because Parker was an illegal alien.
I'm more surprised by all the empty space they left around the stage. They could have filled another 5000 people down on the floor. Shocked Parker didn't try to squeeze every dime out of the show he could.
@ elvisworldwide actually, the attendance record he set was 55 thousand, a record that stood until 93, when Selena did her first of three concerts. and that record was broke in 94 by Selena again, and again in 95 by, guess who?
@MuppetShowManiac The reason Selena was able to set a new record was that there Astrodome went through a renovation in an attempt to keep the Oilers in Houston. The scoreboard you briefly see in the background was removed and about 20,000 new seats were added. Also...the all time record was George Strait's performance that closed the Astrodome.
This is neat to see! My boyfriend, now husband and I were there for the 1970 performance; we were college kids back then. This looks a lot like that show, but so many of you are saying this was filmed in1974. I also remember a guy jumping off the rails into the arena to run up to the stage, only to be smothered by at least 20 security guards lining the arena. They cuffed and stuffed that dude so fast. The '70 show was awesome; it will always be a great memory.
I was at this show. I left before Elvis came out. I was only there to see the Jackson Five perform earlier. We didn't care about Elvis. I have to laugh at that. Seems silly now. I should have stayed.
Very cool to see. The simplicity of the whole event is downright humbling. The worlds finest entertainer in the world rolls out in a tiny Bronco then takes a stage fit for a bar act. A simpler time it was. We will never see another Elvis.
@mercedes560sel Even more humbling is that the show is part of a Rodeo, and what they are performing on is bullsh+t rolled flat like dirt. And most people are not immune to the smell. I was there.
@flashframe7777 oh my Lord . . that would never happen in this era of self absorbed talentless/soulless "artists" . . . that must have been quite a thrill for you to be there!
Elvis played The Houston Astrodome on the 27th and 28th of February 1970 and the 1st of March 1970, three days in a row with two shows on each day. Also two shows on the 3rd of March 1974 which is this video.
I was there as a kid. Hard to believe Elvis played the rodeo. Great footage. Too bad there was no sound even if it was poor quality this would have been great.
1970 : Research program launched committing $100,000 annually in support of research studies at various universities and colleges in Texas
1974 : The first World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. Elvis Presley sets attendance record of 43,944. On his second show, on the same day, he breaks his own record drawing 44,175, for a one-day record 88,119
they could not build a bigger stage because this was THE HOUSTON RODEO, and the stage was assembled in 10 minutes, the performer performed, then taken down in 10 minutes
Wow if you look at the 0.19 point and play it over several times you will see the truck took off before everyone was out of the vehicle. The man in the very back looked like Red West, he went flying out and landed on his ass. also you can see Dr Nick getting thrown off last. Nick was sitting next to Jo E. on the drivers side. The driver with the cowboy hat, just bolted out of there. Very strange.,
Are you sure this is 1974? Everything about this great footage just screams 1970 ! His hair-his suit-his energy-his mannerisms-even the suits the band are wearing.
It's '74... note Duke Bardwell on bass... he only played with Elvis in 1974. Also, the group Voice (male singers to Elvis' right) only toured with Elvis in '74 and '75.
@dalesguy yeah its deffinitely elvis. early 1974 was great for elvis. he didnt start losing control till around septmeber and october. after october he didnt perform again till march 1975
Wow great footage! I heard Elvis REALLY rocked and put on a fantastic show when he played the Astrodome. Those shows were the only shows without the orchestra, just Elvis and the TCB band. Thos shows should have beenn professionally filmed! I am really suprised there isn't more professional concert footage of Elvis. Especially his 1969 Vegas Comeback! I can't believe noone thought to film those first live shows he did.
@Fogslifted I agree entirely.I don't think the best of Elvis was actually caught on professional film.No Madison Square Garden,no Live on stage in Memphis,no '69 Vegas shows, nothing from 1971 etc etc.
What a treat! So - out of the 50 thousand in attendance, only 1 person had a Super 8? Impossible! Thanks BL77 posting and KEL for sharing - and to the person taking the footage in '74 - you rock!

I think Dr. Nick is the only person not to fall out of the truck. A few people were dusting themselves off for sure.
