David does this song so damn well live I dont even listen to the studio version these days because it doesnt sound right to me, and this version is as good if not better then Pulse, it's brilliant
I agree a bit with what some people say about some of Roger's recent songs, they are borefests. Fairytales...
* He milked 'DSOTM', performing it in a tribute band way, and hardly sings during the performances of it. PF toured it in 72-75, doing it in 2008 under the name Roger Waters doesn't do it at all.
* He tours with no new material, just a greatest a hits set & 'DSOTM'.
* He started to play a few stadiums, at least here in Norway and Denmark, doing what he 20 years ago said he despised.
Well, I like 'On An Island', it's an album that is not for everyone that is for sure. I know of lots of people that love Roger's 80's work, but when it comes to 'Amused To Death' and the songs he has been releasing the last few years, they don't like it at all. People see it different. I don't want you to get the wrong impression. Roger is a brilliant conceptualist, writer, lyricist and performer on stage. He is however not so good on bass, creating music and his vocals isn't the best...IMO.
I personally don't see the need of celebrating an album that really needs all 4 of them to work the best Live on the arena. Pink Floyd performed it sometimes in 1994 and it was really good, but not the same without Roger. He was invited to Earls Court though, but declined the offer through his manager.
I would say that Roger's shows HAD a uniqe character. Everything from the 'Pros & Cons', to the 'KAOS' and 'In The Flesh' tours. Brilliant stuff, original and a lot of atmosphere.
I don't want you get get the wrong impression here, I love nearly all of Waters solo work, and his work in Pink Floyd is priceless. The years he dominated the band 1977-1983, sees the releases of 3 of my favourite Pink Floyd albums (Animals, The Wall & The Final Cut). I also love his solo albums, though a lot of the stuff on 'Radio KAOS' is flawed. I do love the Pink Floyd minus Roger releases from David, Nick and Rick as well. I'm a Pink Floyd fan that was very dissapointed by RWs recent tour.
I to saw the 2002 tour but felt the DSOMtour was better and certaily had more atmosphere. As it was celebrating Dark Side it felt right that alot of PF songs were played. There were so many highlights from the opening (even the preshow was excellent) In the Flesh, Perfect Sense &Sheep and we haven't even got to DSOM. The encore Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home - nothing inthe DGshow comes near to achieving that fever pitch reached. Rogers shows have a totally unique character
I personally thought the 2006/07 shows lacked the atmosphere though. The 2002 show was brilliant, Roger played probably half of his 'Amused To Death' album, which was a pleaser for me. I'm sorry, but his recent tour (the DSOTM portion) sounded like the Aussie Pink Floyd at times, like a cover band, as Roger hardly did any singing, and would just walk around on stage playing bass, with little interaction with the audience. Totally opposite from 2002.
Did you even attend any of David & Rick's shows in 2006? Just curious, no offence or anything. What I like about David is that he changes his setlist each night, a lot of improvisation, extended solos, jamming. Roger's tour is relying on click tracks, and there is little or no room for setlist change and improvisation, which is sad. In 1999-2002 he changes his setlist a few times, also in 1987. David & Rick played songs that Pink Floyd have never played Live before. And then there is 'Echoes'..

I saw DG at Mcter and like you I like both. I don't like OAIsland however and hardly ever listen to it.Hence, having watched Gdansk which yet again features OAnIsland(as did Remember thatNiight)I won't be buying it. Talk about milking it. Rogers shows are not just about virtuoso guitar, but the theartre, the show, the message, the cynical politics. Its something that made PF and perhaps some of the other eurpopean&US audiences dont get.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Clearly if the shows use backdrop films as Roger does then a click track is necessary. PF always produced great shows and when you watch Roger its clear were that creative comes from.
I saw RW at Mcter and Liverpool. He certainly interacted with audience and the fans felt an affinity with him that was far more real than DG. Rogers audience was far more animated & involved than at a DG show. Roger even said that they had performed the show 165 times and the Liverpool crowd was probably number 1
Roger said the crowd in Vestlandshallen, Norway, where I saw him were the best on the tour so far. I don't buy it, it's a commercial trick for the masses. Releasing a Live album of the material off an artist's new album isn't to "milk it" at all, and a long with the PF classics it's a real treat. Both 'On An Island', 'Remember That Night' and 'Live in Gdansk' has been commercially successful, but as I said, it's not for everyone. David makes room for improvisation, which is like old days in PF.

I respect your views, but am bit confused by some of your comments- I think most people feel DG is milking it = Gdansk & Remember that night are very simailar & from the same tour, but you accused Roger of "cashing in"?
I can't see the preoccupation with improvisation ? It smacks of the DG aren't we clever brigade. On an Island is dros, dull tedious and relies totally on extended guitar solos
@Glume001 Yes if you read the Roger Waters interview in from 92 (forget the mag) he goes on about U2 sucking because they play big arenas and charge too much. The wall is playing in Vancouver and I would have to fork out 500 bucks per to get a good seat. Otherwise wait for the 30 DVD.
The 2006/2007/2008 concerts were mainly a cash in tour in my eyes, no new material (Leaving Beirut was 3 years old at the time he went on tour, and doing one "newer" solo song along with one from 'Amused To Death' doesn't do it for me. The 2007 ticket was given to me by a friend, so I attended. I'm sorry, but Waters lost a lot of respect from me by doing what he did and go down the Pink Floyd 87 way, to cash in on greatest hits concerts, like his 2006/07 concerts were. Hardly any solo songs...
You don't believe me, then fine. Isaw him at the Norwegian Wood festival in '06, and in Vestlandshalle, Bergen in '07. I love Roger Waters, but his songs over the last few years have been extremly dissapointing. No new album, just mediocre songs. If you don't believe he lip synched, then check out 'Have A Cigar' from Rock In Rio 2006. Also recomended is 'The Gunners Dream' from the same concert. I have my ticket stubs and memories as proof, I don't care if you don't believe me.
Actually I love both albums nearly equally. Roger and David doing what they do best, and it shows. Of course their best work was together. 'Echoes', 'Comfortably Numb', 'Wish You Were Here', 'Breathe', 'Time', 'Shine On', 'Dogs'...the list goes on.
I love most of Waters work, 'Pros & Cons Of Hitch Hiking' and 'Amused To Death' are brilliant albums. I must add that I saw Roger for the first time in 2002, and it was one of the best concerts ever. I bothered to attend the 2006 concert because I at the time was a big fan of Roger, after seeing him mime to backing tracks on stage, and to see the Rock In Rio videos, where he blew it bigtime, I lost a lot of respect for the man. In 2002, he did everything Live.
Roger sang it on the album beautifully, but Live he sucked really and has been since the 70's. I collect PF bootlegs and I have a lot of shows from 1974 and onwards, including him performing it solo, and it does'n sound good at all in my opinion.
David manages to put the emotions that Roger did on the studio version, on the live arena.
Saying this is Roger's song, says a lot about the lack of Floyd knowledge, but I've always thought of Roger fans as a bunch of arrogant assholes anyway. :)
As much as I admire DG, Roger sings it way better and gives a much more powerful and genuine performance. If a wanted a Cosby Stills & Nash style song I'd buy one of their CDS but I don't. It was and always will be Roger's song
Rogers recent tour was so much better than Gdansk and true to the Pink Floyd spirit
"It's Roger's song", listen to your bullshit. Most of the music is David and Rick's, Roger wrote the lyrics. It's a group effort, not Roger's song. Evne Roger himself has said that David and Rick is a BIG part of that song. I saw 2 shows with Roger in 2006 and 2007, and he was relying on backing tracks and was lip synching parts of this song. So Roger hardly "sang" it at all really. You can say what you want, but the facts are against you on this one. RWs tour was far from true to the PF spirit.
I don't believe you went to Rogers shows based on your comments. This performance is bland in comparison. People keep perpetuating this lyp synch rumour. I saw him and I don't think he did lypsynch
I was there, it was wonderful moment in my life. And I'll never forget this version "Shine On...". I love the way David sings "shine on you crazy diamond"... Brilliant!
Roger can't sing like David and he'll never perform this song as perfect as David. Gilmour is better singer and musican than Waters, but, of course, Roger writes great lyrics and he created wonderful songs, but David always do this better.
this is the best version of this song. I love Pulse, but this sounds so much more stripped down and raw with emotion
