no no not at all. you are correct about his career he will keep racing longer than most other horses that are good like summer bird and musket man, but it doesnt mean the glue factory. he is loved wat too much. maybe chip wolley will make him his stable pony like funny cide was for barclay tag. as far as complete reitrement maybe the kentucky horse park in lexington
Even though I'm not a MTB fan, I wish him a long, happy and productive life! I just don't want to see him "put down" because he's a gelding, and he's too old or broke down to race any more. He made his owners a good living after all, and he deserves a good retirement.
@gotch09 Hopefully it won't be that way. They could use him maybe as a lead pony, exercise horse with the horses racing, maybe retirement on a farm until he gets old?
@21Sarabi Even thought I'm not a "Bo-rail" fan at all, and I wasn't that big of a fan of Mind that Bird, I wish him all the best and a very happy and long retirement.

The word you are looking for is VARIANT. You need the lessons. The TRACK has to be running a certain way for any of this to work. That's why you don't just play a race at track here or there. Track variant is a simple numbers figure! It in a nutshell,it takes into accoun tall the races run on a particular day at a particular track, with the same track conditions and distance!!! i want Mr Woolly to know that his attitude is apreciated i like the part where he says
"no matter the weather he's gotta run." the sport needs more people like him and jess jackson and less ones like john sherrif and mike laverone. i if you think your horse is the best prove it. beat the best. if not just shut up. i have grown to like MTB he definatly belongs.
Gelding that horse = Worse decision ever! Can you imagine what the return on investment would be if he was able to sire? Oh well, hard to foresee those sort of things.
I read that the horse was unmanageable as a yearling. If Mine That Bird had not been gelded, it's likely that he would not have turned out to be the race horse that he is.
so if he ran his final 1/4 23.1/5 he must be better then barbaro, fupeg, smarty and manarchos, funny cide and street sence. they ran the derby under 2.02 or 2.01 manarchos ran his in 1.59 4/5. so this are very slow horse according to BE109. if you need lesson in horse racing i don't charge. FYI secretariat ran by his 159 2/5 that means he would have beaten MTB by 10 or more.
Monarchos won the K-Derby primarily due to the fact the pace was 44 4/5 for the 1/2(fastest in Derby history by the way),they went 6 furlongs in a scary 1:09 2/5(you can win a lot of graded sprints with that time),and Monarchos was WAY BACK off that and he came on to win. His Florida Derby was pretty much the same. Those were his only big wins, and if the pace was normal he didn't get there! Thats called a lack of tactical speed! Didn't say he couldn't run, said he just didn't have that burst,CONT
CONT- Needed to pick up horses who have something left in the tank, and have the speed to go on with it. MTB's Derby had a normal pace,6 furlongs in 1:12 is not blistering. Yet MTB closed with a fury to win going away. Smarty's Derby was run in 2;04 or 2:05 in the same kind of conditions. SS ran the same exact way as MTB,from way back and a wicked rail shot. Aside from Monarchos(who was a closer who did need a very fast pace to set him up)those other horses had tactical speed. CONT-
Cont- I find it amusing when someone interjects Secretariat into the conversation. Lets get something straight,Secretariat was THE EXCEPTION TO EVERY RULE,therefore bringing his exploits up is not relevant. As for lessons in horseracing, well I believe it is you who needs them and oh by the way I do charge a fee. Finally mvm921,I never said he was better than FuPeg,Barbaro, etc., all I was pointing out was MTB is one helluva racehorse. He deserves to make no apologies to anyone.
Secretariat was a freak of nature, beyond Micheal Jordan, physically abnormal. Since you offer lessons you must know what I mean. What do slow fractions do for a horse that likes to come from off the pace? Is it easier for a horse to run away with slow fracs? You said you give free lessons.
Actually Chance(you seem to dislike me,and I know you not at all, strange) there are 2 types of closers! #1 you have the type that has to have a very quick pace up front to set the race up for him. Meaning if the pace isn't fast enough he will fall short! The other type #2(aside from a freak like Sec), is like MTB,a horse who prefers to be way back,BUT has the turn of foot to run down horses even after a pace that is honest or a bit slow! A fast pace would make things even easier him type! SIMPLE
us racing should use a euro tip . they don't let gelding run in some classics. it was the sloppy track. lets see on saturday. he is going to be way much closer to the pace this time mike is not going to let them get away from him. and that may cause him the race i think he could win belmont at a longer distance thats his best chance.
I'll give one free lesson mvm921,you made a comment that it was the sloppy track in the Derby, not the talent of the horse. You said Smith would have him much closer to the pace, and that will cost him the race. Well, it was common knowledge that MTB does his best running from the back half of the field. The reason is when he is that far back he will relax and get off the bridle. If he is closer, like 5th or 6th,he has shown a tendency to put himself in the race down the backside, way too early,CONT
CONT- That is something Woolley was saying before the Derby. So it is not surprising at all that Smith had him where was in the Preakness. You place your horse where he will have the best chance. Like I said before,he ran his final 1/4 in the Derby in 23 1/5,you said it was the slop, well in the Preakness(dry track by the way and a different surface than Churchill) he made the same big move, and according to Haskins,he estimates he ran his final 3/16 in a sick 18 3/5! RA ran hers in 19 1/5,CONT_
CONT- 19 1/5 is considered excellent for 3/16 of a mile. So MTB is the real mcCoy. One thing you got right,is the Belmont S. makes him even more dangerous. End of lesson.
"Cheap" horses do not run their final 1/4 in a blazing 23 1/5 seconds. What that means is this gelding has world class talent. Many so-called "cheap" horses can have a hard time doing that split in the first 1/2 mile of a race. He did this in a 1 1/4 mile race, and after already running a mile. And if you notice,he didn't look very tired when Borel was being interviewed. He might not win the Preakness, but MTB is most definitely NOT a "cheap" horse.
So9,you see that turn of foot at Churchill?? You would think a triple crown within reach. Now it is all about Rachel Alexander!! A Filly?? Yea, she won by 20, and she will be 4-5 sat. Still does not mean she will win.
I'm predicting that MTB will run more like his earlier efforts in the Preakness. Unless he's made from something other than horse flesh and bone he will be feeling the affects of that tremendous output of energy that he expended in the Derby. Watch for a bounce.
You could very well be right fruglescot, sometimes horses do bounce with an effort like that. His final 1/4 was 23 1/5 seconds! That is Secretariat-like! His trainer knew he ran better farther off the pace. He had never been that far back and he ran a huge one. Sure the mud may have played a part. I hope he puts up another good run win or lose.
man talk about a cinderella story! Trainer seems down to earth and not full of theirselfs like d wayne lucas n baffert. The best choice he made was to mount borel cause no other jockey wouldve pulled that off they way he did
Mine That Bird was bred in Kentucky,he ran in Canada at 2,at 3 he ran in my home state of New Mexico( he is NM owned and NM trained). Wow he is hauled in a horse trailer all the way from NM to Churchill and goes out an just absolutely shocks the racing world. Hey this is what great about this game. GO MINE THAT BIRD!!!!!
its really good to see a horse from our neck of the woods win a big race like he did. i was amazed when i saw him win! mine that bird may not win the triple crown but he won the kentucky derby with a TRUE underdog story!
red2138 it was really nice to see. Some seem to think out here we just run worn out nags and nothing else. Here is a horse who did not win in NM,and then he turns around and wins the Derby!
boy o boy he sure didnt know what was in store for the weekend did he? i told my family three weeks ago there are two birdstone horses in the derby, i didnt think they would be a threat but wasnt i wrong?! grindstone, birdstone, and now mine that bird. maybe people will listen next time, theres a reason he was named champion two year old. doesnt matter what countrym invasor proved that. hopefully he has two more winner circles in him!
come on guys let the owner talk its his time to be in a spotlight...fluke or no fluke the horse and jockey deserves a wonderful compliments be sports besides its a king of sport
He may be a gelding, but the dam and sire of this horse just got a whole lot more valuable...probably owned by some damn redneck. Go rednecks! Kick the buts of those elitist bigots!
and it's shits like you that give horse racing a bad name. The sport isn't just about breeding. It's about champions, about athletics, it's about excitement. Funny Cide was a gelding from New York and had a fantastic career.
According to your comment, mvm921, this horse will have more value than you ever will.
no value- one hit wonder?? He was sold as a yearling for 9,500 and then was privately resold for 400,000 following his graded stakes and 4th straight win as a 2 year old at Woodbine. Canada's champion 2-year-old male of last year. You sound very educated about racing.. -Love, your favorite redneck-
End Horse Slaughter. El Paso, Texas is the largest exporter in the world of horses going to slaughter. For each horse that wins the Kentucky Derby there are hundreds of thousands if not millions of horses (many race horses) that go to slaughter in Juarez. Mexico Some of these horses sold for kill are young thouroughbred race horses. This win could increase breeding, which is the root of the problem. Please help, there is a flip side to this story.
guitarbutt. Not that I want to continue to conversate with you, but YOU should be locked up somewhere and never be allowed to GO NEAR the internet. Take your meds today???
The track condition, Extreme fast pace, and Near perfect trip have to be factured in MTB's Deby victory when assesing his perfomance..
I'm not Ready too Dismiss the Derby result as a Fluke, but i've been involed in the game too long to give a horse too much credit for a performance where nearly all circumstances were in their favor...
His 9,500 pricetag makes for a nice story, and I will be rooting for him in the preakness, but I will be surpised too see him win.
so the trainer called this.. he said he's a come from behind horse...he's taken the lead before but faltered...the right jockey _ Calvin _ was able to know when to begin the come from behind..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
just amazing....the man has one training win this year.....1!!!! The horse ran like crap twice already this year.....only way he qualified was from winning a Canadian grade 3 last year, 2 owners ago....got his a** kicked in Bredders Cup Juve. finishing last....what else is there to say....yes, I agree, fluke....
Nah its not a fluke. 3 year olds go through a difficult maturation process and this guy is coming into his own...this horse will turn out to be quite good....he isnt technically even 3 years old yet....
I think a horse should no be able to run in any classic if in its life it does not win a GRADE 1 race or even a GRADE2 to enter the derby, and not money earned.
shitty jockys had a lot to do with the other races. So what part was the fluke? The part where he ran a faster time in the mud then other winners did when the track was dry? Or that he had a real jocky? Or?
This was a nothing short of an 'in the zone' Borel ride who said of slipping thru that small hole on the rail past the leaders - "Well, he's just a little horse." Was this a fluke? The horse has the pedigree - all those birds - Birdstone, etc, and he certainly had the jockey..
Mind That Bird had Calvin Borel, plus pedigree of not only Birdstone, but Smart Strike (sire of Curlin) on dam side. Too bad MTB is gelded - can't earn stud fees!
I love it.......you have these big name trainers with their suits/ties/egos strolling into Churchill Downs and here comes Woolley on crutches from a motorcycle wreck nonetheless and his horse runs away from everyone
I didn't really care that much for MTB, I just didn't think he was all that great, but the problem I have is this: this horse is a gelding.

He might not win the Preakness, but MTB is most definitely NOT a "cheap" horse.

cheap horse wont win again bet on that
mvm921 2 years ago
with what knowledge you say that?
you gonna see MTB be THE triple crowned and you will be eating your herst out.... you r just an AH
paunocudatuamae 2 years ago
aren't steroids illegal in KY now? It would be stupid to use them anyways if you were to win then get checked, then disqualified.
ashado19 2 years ago
you sound just like your mom.
arytonjames 2 years ago
So9,you see that turn of foot at Churchill?? You would think a triple crown within reach. Now it is all about Rachel Alexander!! A Filly?? Yea, she won by 20, and she will be 4-5 sat. Still does not mean she will win.
timclassic 2 years ago
NO TRIPLE CROWN WINNER IN 2009
I'm predicting that MTB will run more like his earlier efforts in the Preakness. Unless he's made from something other than horse flesh and bone he will be feeling the affects of that tremendous output of energy that he expended in the Derby. Watch for a bounce.
Just one man's opinion

BE109 2 years ago
its really good to see a horse from our neck of the woods win a big race like he did. i was amazed when i saw him win! mine that bird may not win the triple crown but he won the kentucky derby with a TRUE underdog story!

red2138 it was really nice to see. Some seem to think out here we just run worn out nags and nothing else. Here is a horse who did not win in NM,and then he turns around and wins the Derby!

i couldnt agree more.

He may be a gelding, but the dam and sire of this horse just got a whole lot more valuable...probably owned by some damn redneck. Go rednecks! Kick the buts of those elitist bigots!
egghead1961 2 years ago
HA! No kidding,... this redneck because of it's fn gelding which HAD no value instantly now owns that track!! Gotta love that Poetic Justice.

come on man this horse is a one hit wonder. he is a fucken gelding he has no value. got damn rednecks.
mvm921 2 years ago
and it's shits like you that give horse racing a bad name. The sport isn't just about breeding. It's about champions, about athletics, it's about excitement. Funny Cide was a gelding from New York and had a fantastic career.
According to your comment, mvm921, this horse will have more value than you ever will.
ArtemisHoney 2 years ago
no value- one hit wonder??

His 9,500 pricetag makes for a nice story, and I will be rooting for him in the preakness, but I will be surpised too see him win.
onotheking 2 years ago
so the trainer called this.. he said he's a come from behind horse...he's taken the lead before but faltered...the right jockey _ Calvin _ was able to know when to begin the come from behind..

just amazing....the man has one training win this year.....1!!!! The horse ran like crap twice already this year.....only way he qualified was from winning a Canadian grade 3 last year, 2 owners ago....got his a** kicked in Bredders Cup Juve. finishing last....what else is there to say....yes, I agree, fluke....
Rockfish222 2 years ago
Everyone's dealt a good hand eventually.
JunkyardGlory 2 years ago
Nah its not a fluke. 3 year olds go through a difficult maturation process and this guy is coming into his own...this horse will turn out to be quite good....he isnt technically even 3 years old yet....
mrr1980 2 years ago
I think a horse should no be able to run in any classic if in its life it does not win a GRADE 1 race or even a GRADE2 to enter the derby, and not money earned.
identaman 2 years ago
Mine That Bird was Canada's Two Year Old Horse of the Year, BECAUSE as a two year old he was spectacular at Woodbine.
He is well known in Canada. Typically, anything happening in Canada is completely off the radar screen in the USA.
His Kentucky Derby win is not the fluke. The fluke was his losing races with the new owners.
melc1949 2 years ago 4
shitty jockys had a lot to do with the other races. So what part was the fluke? The part where he ran a faster time in the mud then other winners did when the track was dry? Or that he had a real jocky? Or?
polidic 2 years ago
This was a nothing short of an 'in the zone' Borel ride who said of slipping thru that small hole on the rail past the leaders - "Well, he's just a little horse." Was this a fluke? The horse has the pedigree - all those birds - Birdstone, etc, and he certainly had the jockey..
merrywriter1 2 years ago 6
Mind That Bird had Calvin Borel, plus pedigree of not only Birdstone, but Smart Strike (sire of Curlin) on dam side. Too bad MTB is gelded - can't earn stud fees!
IJnet 2 years ago 2
I completly agree!
