Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Review

I'm in the middle of this game right now, still mixed. I think its trying to be a BIG PlayStation 2/3 title on a small handheld console which can be a bad thing. As well as that, Big Boss seems more or less diminshed from the badass hero we saw in MGS3. I don't know, hopefully it'll improve :D

Very professional review, can't believe it was your first! Just one question though, if you can play the whole game with soldiers who can walk past enemies freely, is there a real reason to even use Snake? I love what I've played so far but I feel that the recruits bring the gameplay down (maybe I'm missing something :P )

Quite simply, if you like the other MGS games then you will like this.. Its one of the best PSP games IMO, excellent quality graphics, sounds and the gameplay is just the way you would expect it - capturing people simply allows you to play as other characters if you want..

I don't know off hand, but doing a quick search in Google with the search being "How do you get a KGB or GRU soldier in Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops" brings up a few sites that give you a password you can enter for different soldiers.

Well, the game is rated M for Mature which is for ages 17 on up. Since I don't know your son, it would be tough for me to make a judgment on whether or not your son was mature enough to play this game.

Thanks for the comment! To answer some of your questions:

1.) No, there is no auto aim

2.) Yes and no. I think you can enjoy the game without being a fan, but a lot of the story might go over your head if you aren't into it.

3.) I never got a chance to play the online, but I know it has infrastructure. I can't remember if it has ad hoc, but I am pretty sure it does.

Actually, come to think of it, there might be an auto aim if you shoot from the third person view. When you switch to first person, there is no auto aim.

I recommend using the first person view anyway when firing.

Well...i'm tryin' to get my own psp and i want get portable ops with it. But i'm worried about the controls....do they suck or it's just a matter of gettin' along with it?

It takes a bit getting used to, but once you do get the hang on it, it feels like any other MGS game.

It just feels weird at first because of the way the D-Pad and the analog nub are set up, but I had no problem with it.

The sound in the video or in the game? Yeah I have to compress it down a bit so I could get it on to EG, but I think I did the best I could.

It wouldn't have been 100% if the controls weren't all that funky, but 95% is still a very good score. :)
