  • OMG. Where do these academic BS types come from, I ask you?

This woman's intellectualizing is a travesty.

  • loneliness... supposedly the man sitting with his back towards you is Edward hopper himself. Also the diner has no visible doors or windows. It just exherts such a powerful feel.

  • I see this scene as an urban oasis. I never thought of interpreting it in any other way. It reminds me of being in a big city all alone and not knowing anyone, and going into a coffee shop to feel so not all alone before going home for the night. I've had this experience, and this painting brings it back to me.

  • i see loneliness and sadness. the loneliness of the guy on his own mulling things over in his mind. the loneliness of the guy having to work during the night to pay his way. the couple look ambiguous but do not look happy. perhaps an illicit rendezvous. a snapshot of society. beautiful and moving. can't say i was thinking of an al capone shoot out!

  • Polish translation by me part3:

Czy to jest może scena z filmu gangesterkiego i w każdej minucie może wpaść tam jakiś ganster i wszystkich obrabować? Czy rodzaj miejskiej oazy, miejsca bezpiecznego, w którym można się zaszyć w środku nocy w nieprzyjaznym mieście. Ja tego nie wiem, sami zdecydujcie.

  • Polish translation by me part1:

To jest prawdopodobnie jedno z najsławniejszych obrazów Hoppera.

wydaje się zbieżny...wynika to sporo z jego..?attribiuties niż z faktów, takich, że

o to jesteśmy w całonocnej jadłodalni, które to miejsce nie było tak daleko od domy Hoppera w wiosce ?Gredge?.

Jest to prawdopodobnie późna godzina nocna. Jest tu dwóch facetów, jednemu z nich towarzyszy kobieta o rudych w

    łosach i czerwonej sukience.

  • I think she is totally welcome to her own opinion, even though they really not, she is quoting other critics, and peoples opinions.

And seeing as Hopper never gave any explanations of his paintings, its up to the individual the read the image how you want.

i read the painting by quite a few facts of the time, the painting was painted not so soon after the japanese hit Pearl Harbour.

hopper was influence heavily by the cinema at the time, so it could act as a snapshot into a film noir scene

  • it's about LONELINESS, lady. the vast north American LONELINESS. they don't teach that at MFA BS levels...

  • Edward Hopper's inspiration for Nighthawks was Ernest Hemingway's short story "The Killers" and the story "A Well-Lighted Place."

  • what does she knows about being at the street at that time of the night...what does everybody knows, only hopper...

  • Yes.

  • ganster scene? urban oasis? I think she's not only misssing the point of this painting, she's missing the point of Hopper's entire career. In fact, I think one of the purposes of this particular painting is to emphasize that there is no oasis. Loneliness cannot be cured...even in a crowd, even in the midst of the oasis.

  • But how do you know it's about loneliness? Couldn't it also be about solitude and the desire to get away for a little while.

  • Or, the guy in the corner could simply be alone, just drinking his coffee while he observes the conversation between the guy behind the fountain and the other patrons. That's what I see when I see this painting.
