I ask this because it's easy for me to run an RGB and wired (headphone style) audio connection into my TV.
When I connect by HDMI, the picture is different - too bright - so I went back to the RGB connection.
HDMI cables DO transmit sound - but maybe your PC isn't supporting this function (my nVidia driver gives no option to set audio - and unfortunately my PC has an electrical digital output whilst the TV has optical!
Hey great vid...I have a 2005 compaq presario has VGA port in the back m just got a hd tv it also has VGA port in the back but when I connect them and turn on my pc it won't show up on my tv do I need to get something else? Please respond thanks
PLEASE RESPOND SOON: I'm just going to use my laptop, would i be able to use a VGA to HDMI cable? Because i just tried using a VGA to DVI cable then a DVI to HDMI but the VGA to DVI (that i got) won't read DVI Digital (and it's expensive). I can get a VGA to HDMI much cheaper and i was wondering, Would that work and would it give me a good quality? P.S. I'm only going into a 32' 720p tv so i couldn't get to crazy with quality even if i wanted to.
@cali4life72 If your computer only has a VGA port then see if your TV has one also and if it does then just use a VGA cable. If not, then you'll need a VGA to DVI or HDMI converter box, they're a little bit of money. You can't just use a VGA to DVI/HDMI cable, there needs to be a converter box to go from an analog (VGA) signal to a digital one. The better option is just using a DVI or HDMI port if your computer has one.
hdmi does transmit sound you just have to go to control panel/ hardware and sound/ sound, there you should see your tv's name and your Speakers click your tv's name and you should see option Set Default down below click that and there you go. But there is a problem you can only have one working at the time (speakers or TV). You can not have them working at the same time. I have a hdmi port on my graphics card, i don't know if that has something to do with it, but it works for me.
i have a 42 inch tv in my room and i want a computer but dont have enough room to fit one in so can i buy a toweer and link it to my tv (my tv hasnt got hd ) please help
to use the stereo for all stuff on the tv like cable and pc without swiching up cords is to use the tiny audio cord for the pc pluged intot the small audio cord on the back of the tv and to plug the stero into the audio out pplugs on the back of the tv and just select hidmi 2 or wateer is the hdmi port and for cable u go to the other input and the stereo is automaticly connected to the cable. (this is my setup)
@MrBrotato im not tech savy, could you please help me? i dont have a DVI port on my pc to connect a DVI to HDMI converter. what should i get and do to connect my pc to my hdtv?
@MrBrotato LOL we got the same TV 1 question i want to buy a desktop without a monitor will it instantly connect to the tv with hdmi? will the options menue show up on the tv when the hdmi is connected to it. Im i ok if i buy a dell without a monitor and just use it with my tv?
@RetroEcHo789 If you have an HDMI port on your TV and a DVI or HDMI port on your computer, the process is as simple as connecting a cable and setting the TV to the HDMI input channel.
You dont want to hook your PC up to an old TV. it will look trashy. The most you could probably do is S-video and putting your desktop resolution at 480 to match your TV.
@N112693 No. HDMI is a digital signal and VGA is analog. The two types of signals cannot be converted within a wire, a converter box is required (and sold online at places like Amazon).
You sound like the guy who can answer my question. I have my Samsung NF210 netbook hardwired into my LG 32inch HDTV and what a pain the butt!!! I have 2 separate cables runnin' between my LazyBoy where I usually have my netbook in my lap and my HDTV on the tv stand. I'm wonderin' if and how I could have a wireless connection? Any info would be appreciated.
@CowboyPenner Connecting your computer to TV wirelessly requires some special kind of hardware. If you search Amazon for something like "computer to tv wireless" you should find some options.
hey is their anyway way to connect your your HDMI cable from anywhere lets say a ps3/xbox or dvd player into your computer and view it on your computer?? i think i need some program but do you know of any?
@alphabroly28 In order to do this you need a capture card for the computer and whatever accompanying software comes with that. I have no experience with this stuff though.
@MrBrotato ok thanks buddy i do have a capture card an easycap but he quality sucks so i wanted to use hdmi but i forgot the laptops hdmi is only output not input.
Dont know if im doing anything wrong, but when i connect my laptop with HDMI cable to my hd tv it works perfect, but it doesnt work with the desktop no singnal at all just black screen.
PCmyTV.co.uk lets you know which cable you actually need to connect PC to TV. You don't necessarily need a HDMI cable, so use this site to search by Make and Model to find out, or connect wirelessly.
Hi I have bought the dvi to hdmi converter and hdmi cable from amazon and it works fine when I turn off my tv and turn it back on it I see nothing just a black screen I have to turn the computer off then back on again to be able to see a picture. This also happens when I change channels to hdmi 2 to play ps3 but when I got back to one no picture could you help me out please thanks
Hi. i'm trying to connect my laptop to my HDTV with a hdmi cable.the image show up fine but there is not audio. i try to use a separate cable for the audio, the one with the black(white?) and red at one end and the normal headphone thing at the other end but still no sound. i tried to connect the sound to my home theater instead of the tv but still no sound what should i do?please help!!
hi ,i have intel celeron without graphic card i wanna attach it with my full sony HDTV 1080....if i use VGA to HDMI converter then it will give me a full hd screen ? or low quality picture ? replay fast as u an plz ...........
one thing more can i able to play blue ray and hd movies(e.g 1080p) with vga to hdmi converter ? (on my full hdtv)
good video MrBrotato however my pc to hdtv vga connection stop working recently and i have no reason why,am getting no signal on the tv screen plz help. I tried my sister's laptop and the result is the same and it work before.
@UltimateSage101 If neither computer is working and you're connecting it the way you did before then the problem is apparently with the TV. Do you have it on the right channel or input setting?
DVI to HDMI cables work great as well - they can be found for $4 on Amazon. I do have a question - not sure if anyone knows if it's possible - now that I got a HDTV I'm considering a BluRay player. My network has a DLNA setup where you can stream stuff wirelessly from the PC to the TV and it works flawlessly. Is it possible to somehow install a $60 BluRay drive on my PC and then stream that via DLNA so I do not have to buy a seperate BluRay player for the TV when I move it to another room?
@f00dl3 The problem with Bluray is it's not like a normal DVD you can play with any media player software. You're forced to use crappy software that is very expensive in order to actually play the discs. PowerDVD is the only software I know of that can play a Bluray disc on the computer, the cheapest version is $40, and it's complete trash. I'll never buy a Bluray disc because they've made it so difficult to access. On the other hand, it may be cheaper than a Bluray player.
Nice video, but I just use a converter I got from SewellDirect, I prefer just plug and play. I got the SW-31000 USB to HDMI converter, but they have many kinds if anyone else is interested. Worked for me.
I have a question I connected my pc to my tv using the HDMI cable ... The screen just shows my desktop pic on my tv screen without the pc icons on my tv screen.. How can i get access to the icons or programs i want to watch from my pc onto my tv screen as well?
I found another great solution that you don't even need to have a PC connection. It's called Avermedia Game Capture HD that everyone is starting to talking about it and be searched on google or youtube. It's plug and play and best of all, you don't need to connect to the PC. Concept is simple as operating a VCR and compact. All you need is the Avermedia box, USB hard drive and all footage are recorded at site without a pc. Some reviews says it’s in Amazon and Newegg already.
I have a new pc that does HD and i got a 20 inch tv thats HD, but problem is since it is a kinda cheeper one it doesnt have a hdmi port, i need like a vga to composite. My tv has a vga port but i dont believe it is in HD
hey my computer doesnt have a DVI port only a VGA, but my monitor has both can i connect my tv that way or does your tower need to have the DVI also. i want to use my tv as a second monitor, obviously i dont want to see the same image on the monitor and tv wouldnt make sense for me since i have my computer and tv next to each other. ?help
i'm trying to connect my desktop to my tv ... my tv doesn't have a hdmi port so i use vga. it works fine when i connect a laptop to the tv but it doesn't work when i connect my desktop. can you help ?? thx
I have a hdmi lead with dvi converter to connect pc to tv, a vga/vga plugged in to pc/monitor, my tv is saying check connection Plz help what should i do?
see here's my problem, im using a graphics not video card, but we all know graphics card is sorta like a 2 in 1 with that. Anyway Im not sure if its my dongle that cant support the bandwidth of the picture or the card itself. i know the card can go up to 2568X1900 or something like that. My problem though is my tv says "Not supported video source"
@DeMBuLlEt1 You just drag the window from one screen to the other. When you right-click your desktop to change display properties you can setup their orientation so you drag windows to what ever side of the screen you want and they pop over to the next monitor.
hi my has a audio coming from my HDMI video card will be a connect to TV there is a cable musing in your PC that the computer store didn't put in it gos from SPDIF inside your PC that go to the connector on your video card
I have two monitor ports on the back of my pc... I also have tow monitors... I also have a hdmi port on the back but when I hook up the hdmi cable to the tv I get nothing... when I hook up my laptop it work right away... the properties on the pc don't work with the tv... have any idea what I can do to make this work?
You can go 50+ feet with a good dvi cable however HDMI Is the preferred way by most as it also carries sound with the right video card. Damn you earthcam for leading me here.
@jensssen HDMI does support sound. The question is if your video card transmits it or not. Googling your video card model or updating drivers may help you answer that.
DVI does _not_ transmit sound, but HDMI does. So u will need HDMI port on ur comp for audio and sound transmition in the same cable. If you only have DVI port on ur comp, as in this clip (and as i do, and he says it in the clip as well) you will aslo need audio cables(1 jack that splits to two males, jack in comp and males in tv, or more jacks to males for 5.1 etc, depending on soundcard on comp and ofc your soundsystem)
@MrBrotato well actuall HDMI does support sound but when you have the DVI to HDMI you need to use the Red and White AV cables! I've also noticed the same thing if you were to use the DVI to HDMI on an older style HDTV, you need to use the red and white wires for audio! Now I also want to say, I have an awesome video card on which has HDMI and DVI ports. I am using the DVI port but when I used just the HDMI port with no converter the sound was coming out!
i just bought a new computer..i have a hp pavilion slimline nd it only have one out put and is only to the monitor! it doesnt have 2 like your harddrive! what should i do.?
@djskandal01 Not much you can do besides try and get another video card, but it's unlikely that is an option due to the size or your case and the power supply probably not being able to support another video card.
ok so i have a dynex 32 inch lcd tv and gateway computer and it has a jaton 3d force 6200xe image card becuase the graphics were poor but it has dvi to rgb converter i have tried the s cable and the rgb blue converter cable but nothing works
and on the instructions it says ( tv-out - mini- Din 9 pin ( tv 0 out) converter cable for composite rca or s video out connecton ) so some help woould be nice
@themrchrist1 Not sure what you mean. Obviously if you're using the TV to display stuff from your computer they both have to be on at the same time.... If you just want to watch TV, just change the input channel to your cable box or whatever you want to watch, you can still have your computer on though.
@themrchrist1 depends on your graphics card. some graphics cards can duplicate the display (so you see the same thing on both screens), and others can do extended screen, which is when the graphics card treats the two screens as one big screen, so you can drag stuff from one screen to the other.
The adapter and HDMI cables (along with a whole bunch of other cables) are great from Monoprice
MP HDMI cables have ferrite beads, I got a cheap one from Walmart to go with my Blu-Ray player and it cost more than MP would have AND it has no ferrites.
The only downside to MP is the shipping charge for a single item is crazy but if you order a bunch at the same tine it is OK.
I got (all 6') 2 TOSlink, 2 VGA,, 2 RG59 component w/ audio, 2 HDMI and 2 HDMI-DVI adapters for like $25
dude just a suggestion... to get more views do stuff like how to get rid of cable or how to minimize costs on your appliances or entertainment devices
@MrBrotato so where can i buy the cord for the rca, and the 2 plugin adapter for the computer, if i plug that from my computer, to my tv, will i get sound? i am also using a hdmi cable for picture
@x1dahui1x Everything I used is explained in my blog post and there are also links to the products on Amazon. If your TV has RCA IN ports, then it should work. If your video card supports it, you might just get sound through the HDMI cable though.
Nice video! Hey ...on another note - if I wanna upload a video to youtube, do I have to have an editing program? Like do I have do buy some software? I was told I did have to. Then I was told that if I have the most current windows that I can get some sort of software available for free from my new computer. My laptop is only 5 months old. Thanks so much for all your help = )
@hotrick12 My mom gave me the rug. She is very old so she has a lot of cool styles like this in her house. I'm thinking about setting up an eBay account to sell more of her vintage house decor. Perhaps you'd be interested in musty rugs or dusty lamps yourself?
does the hdmi converter work with the monitor because my tv is my monitor i have no other monitor and does it help im going to sound stupid but the back button in a browser is cut off a little bit, does this converter fix that?
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!My monitor is not working,so i took mu comp to tv.first,i plugged in the vga cable i hve got into tv.then,i switched on the ups.i had connected it to the box and had plugged in all other parts like the ups cable, vga cable.then i switched on the tv and switched to vga mode.and i switched on the pc.but it doesnt show at all!
@MacRezzi Yes. However, in some cases it does transfer sound with newer drivers or if your computer has an HDMI port.. If it does you still have the option to use either your computer speakers or TV speakers though.
i have a 36'' Plasma TV with a Hdmi Cable Outlet and my computer is a Custom thermal take Compter , and i have a 200 pound Graphics card and i was wondering can i use my computer with my tele... :D
@kevinzelada Yes I am. I guess you don't need a converter to go from digital to analog, but you do need one to go from analog to digital. I'm not exactly an expert in this area, but that is how I understand it to work. I know that trying to go from VGA to HDMI does not work without a converter because the analog to digital problem.
@MrBrotato i have a 36'' Plasma TV with a Hdmi Cable Outlet and my computer is a Custom thermal take Compter , and i have a 200 pound Graphics card and i was wondering can i use my computer with my tele... :D
@proud2bebelgian Look into USB Tv Tuners. I had the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-850 adapter. You need a fairly fast PC though and you have to use the correct tuner for your region but if your in the good old U.S. of A and a fairly new laptop then give the HVR-850 a go, its about 60 USD and you can use it with Windows Media Center. The alternative is using a desktop as a media server with a TV tuner, per-recording your show and then viewing it over your wireless network, assuming you have one.
@MrRyumaru The audio should work just fine using an HDMI cable. Try right-clicking on the volume icon in the system tray (next to the clock) and going to "Playback devices" and see if you can see HDMI or some option like that listed in there. It may be disabled, or you may need to install/update the drivers for your video card.
@MrBrotato When I look, it has an icon for my TV, and when i test the speakers using cinfigure, it works great. But I can't apply the settings. As soon as I close it, it goes right back to my laptop.
I have a laptop with a built in HDMI port, and have it connected to my HD tv. I have the video working perfect, but the audio isn't working. Any suggestions?
connect to a HMDI splitter attach to a HDTV 720P but the HDTV prompt "invalid fomat",the program won't go away wnenever I switch to HDTV as the primary monitor for movie streaming from computer; I try different resolution but the program persists.
Why do you think HDMI is better than RGB?
I ask this because it's easy for me to run an RGB and wired (headphone style) audio connection into my TV.
When I connect by HDMI, the picture is different - too bright - so I went back to the RGB connection.
HDMI cables DO transmit sound - but maybe your PC isn't supporting this function (my nVidia driver gives no option to set audio - and unfortunately my PC has an electrical digital output whilst the TV has optical!

Concept is simple as operating a VCR and compact. All you need is the Avermedia box, USB hard drive and all footage are recorded at site without a pc. Some reviews says it’s in Amazon and Newegg already.

see here's my problem, im using a graphics not video card, but we all know graphics card is sorta like a 2 in 1 with that. Anyway Im not sure if its my dongle that cant support the bandwidth of the picture or the card itself. i know the card can go up to 2568X1900 or something like that. My problem though is my tv says "Not supported video source"

how do you swap them around so you play what evers on your tv to your monitor
DeMBuLlEt1 3 months ago
@DeMBuLlEt1 You just drag the window from one screen to the other. When you right-click your desktop to change display properties you can setup their orientation so you drag windows to what ever side of the screen you want and they pop over to the next monitor.

couldn't you just use gender converters (the female-to-female VGA adapters) to make a vga cable long enough?
ContrabassDrio2325 3 months ago
@ContrabassDrio2325 I suppose you could do that, I haven't tried it.
MrBrotato 3 months ago
@ContrabassDrio2325
You can go 50+ feet with a good dvi cable however HDMI Is the preferred way by most as it also carries sound with the right video card. Damn you earthcam for leading me here.
toh192 2 months ago
so hdmi does support directly sound from your pc to tv?
jensssen 3 months ago
@jensssen HDMI does support sound. The question is if your video card transmits it or not. Googling your video card model or updating drivers may help you answer that.
MrBrotato 3 months ago
DVI does _not_ transmit sound, but HDMI does. So u will need HDMI port on ur comp for audio and sound transmition in the same cable. If you only have DVI port on ur comp, as in this clip (and as i do, and he says it in the clip as well) you will aslo need audio cables(1 jack that splits to two males, jack in comp and males in tv, or more jacks to males for 5.1 etc, depending on soundcard on comp and ofc your soundsystem)
LordApep 3 months ago
@MrBrotato well actuall HDMI does support sound but when you have the DVI to HDMI you need to use the Red and White AV cables! I've also noticed the same thing if you were to use the DVI to HDMI on an older style HDTV, you need to use the red and white wires for audio! Now I also want to say, I have an awesome video card on which has HDMI and DVI ports. I am using the DVI port but when I used just the HDMI port with no converter the sound was coming out!

djskandal01 3 months ago
@djskandal01 Not much you can do besides try and get another video card, but it's unlikely that is an option due to the size or your case and the power supply probably not being able to support another video card.

@ToyFlamez The DVI to HDMI adapter I'm using is no larger than the end of a normal cable, it shouldn't be a problem.
MrBrotato 4 months ago
Can U use both TV and Computer at the same time?!or u have to turn one off!
themrchrist1 4 months ago
@themrchrist1 Not sure what you mean. Obviously if you're using the TV to display stuff from your computer they both have to be on at the same time.... If you just want to watch TV, just change the input channel to your cable box or whatever you want to watch, you can still have your computer on though.
MrBrotato 4 months ago
@themrchrist1 depends on your graphics card. some graphics cards can duplicate the display (so you see the same thing on both screens), and others can do extended screen, which is when the graphics card treats the two screens as one big screen, so you can drag stuff from one screen to the other.
it all depends on what graphics card you have.

'
x1dahui1x 4 months ago
@x1dahui1x Everything I used is explained in my blog post and there are also links to the products on Amazon. If your TV has RCA IN ports, then it should work. If your video card supports it, you might just get sound through the HDMI cable though.

So Now you should get Full 1080P, with Sound.

are u using a dvi to vga adapter to connect your computer monitor? dont u need a converter to do that?
kevinzelada 4 months ago
@kevinzelada Yes I am. I guess you don't need a converter to go from digital to analog, but you do need one to go from analog to digital. I'm not exactly an expert in this area, but that is how I understand it to work. I know that trying to go from VGA to HDMI does not work without a converter because the analog to digital problem.

@proud2bebelgian Nope. Not unless your computer has a TV tuner card, which your laptop would almost certainly not.
MrBrotato 4 months ago
@MrBrotato Well thanks for the effort! :D
proud2bebelgian 4 months ago
@proud2bebelgian Look into USB Tv Tuners. I had the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-850 adapter. You need a fairly fast PC though and you have to use the correct tuner for your region but if your in the good old U.S. of A and a fairly new laptop then give the HVR-850 a go, its about 60 USD and you can use it with Windows Media Center. The alternative is using a desktop as a media server with a TV tuner, per-recording your show and then viewing it over your wireless network, assuming you have one.

My laptop has a built in HDMI port, does that make any difference in the audio not being used?
MrRyumaru 5 months ago
@MrRyumaru The audio should work just fine using an HDMI cable. Try right-clicking on the volume icon in the system tray (next to the clock) and going to "Playback devices" and see if you can see HDMI or some option like that listed in there. It may be disabled, or you may need to install/update the drivers for your video card.
