Well technical the NB was a joint American/German project. Its exterior and interior by Americans, its Golf platform or chassis by Germans. Amazing things happen when the two countries get together! :-)

They ruined the name when they came out with the New Beetle. It is nothing like the old Type 1. In fact, it's everything that the Type 1 was not. The New Beetle is front engined, the T1 was rear. The NB is FWD, the T1 was RWD. The NB has a lot of power options, the T1 had power nothing. The NB has climate control, the T1 had a heater box which gave you engine heat. The NB has a nice ride, the T1 has a very rough ride. The NB has a nice sound system, the T1 had an AM w/1 speaker. Should I go on?

I guess you just don't get it. Here in México (mostly in Mexico city where lots of taxis were T1) they needed a replacement for those Beetles cause that aircooled engine makes a lot of polution. Of course, when they say "New Beetle" is because they want to remark the fact that it´s replacing the old beetle and both have almost the same shape. And yes, you´re right there: the new beetle has much more technology than the old one.
