I have this camera and its GREAT! If you want to record for longer time periods you would have to buy an SD card with much larger memory. An 8 gig card can record up to 30 min at 1080/24fps.
There is no clear or definite way of extending the 550D's maximum recording time, but honestly, what on earth would any of you be shooting that needs a single shot longer than 12min for anyway!?
@justsad991 yes u just buy a bigger sd card but it must be class 10otherwise it cant wright the data as fast and needs to stop recording the simble of class 10 is a 10 in a circle. ive got a 128gb sd 10class and i never had problem with time limitation
(((12 min of HD,,,,THIS IS INVALID))), The error is with your SD card. I have a PNY 16GB SDHC (HD) card and have recorded over 20 min in HD with no pauses or issues.I Suggest you look into buying a top of the line SDHC card. I will admit that when I used a 4gb HD card (sandisk), it would only allow me to record for 2 min.
I really want to buy this camera for the quality, it's awesome. The only thing is, I heard that there is a 12 minute time limit on the full HD recording. Is this true?
@saschavs I never tried to record video that long, but limitation is 4Gb per file so when you use 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps settings, you will reach 4Gb in 12 minutes. You can record longer video then 12 minutes only with lower video quality...
@lifeguardf123 What if you record like lots of clips but together they will all be say 30 minutes for example, will that work? and then you cut them together if you're making a movie for example. Instead of just recording one long one. Hope you understood what i mean, i suck at cameras and stuff ;p
@saschavs yes its true,i have a sandisk 8gb class 10 memory card an it only recorded for 12mins,but i reckon it was because it filled my memory card, maybe if you have a bigger memory it will record longer,i was shooting in full HD btw :)
@saschavs Its not the camera that does that tho, its the SD cards. the file type can only work for files smaller the 4GB so just stop and start the video when it gets close to 4GB
I'm also going to buy this combination not only for photos, but for making short films. You know, you don't need a film scene longer than 12 minutes. You record scenes and then edit them. No matter if the recorded material will bi as separated files. Am i rgiht?
i am going to buy canon 550d in few days any sugestion u will give to me?

hey, I've got a request.
could you do a 720p60 of something like this but then slowed down to 24fps? (60%)
would probably look pretty cool

@saschavs another reason is, that Canon will sell his camcorders to the people. thats the main reason for the Limit

@saschavs heard this problem before many times, solution is a larger GB SD card, helps a lot with mine :D
