  • I can still remember those Saturdays so long ago when my friends and I rode our trusty steeds ( our bikes) to the State theatre in Kalamazoo to be part of the Roy Roders Riders Club and see Roy do the right thing and battle the bad guys and do it with style.Llittle did we know then just how much we were learning from him about morals , values and ethics that would serve us later as men and fathers. Happy Birthday Roy. We miss you.

  • Those of us who remember Roy, and Gene, and Hoppy, are the lucky ones. Who will the kids of today look up to as heroes? My memories of these old stars, introduced to me by my own dad, who was as big a fan as I was, will always be a great part of my childhood. We owe these fine men and women a debt of gratitude, and I, for one, will always love these folks. I'm sure glad I have the Encore Western channel to bring back those great memories.

  • It came in the mail one day when I was a little boy;. I'm 68 years old now and I can remember every word the post card said. It began..Howdy partner; Thanks for writing. Here is a wallet size picture of Trigger and me Many happy trails; Roy Rogers and Trigger. Happy trails to you Roy and Trigger.

  • John Wayne was just a part-time cowboy. Roy never battled the Nazis, just the bad guys on horseback.

  • @McGrottomaster The closest he came to battling the Axis, was in 'KING OF THE COWBOYS', Where Roy Rogers and The Sons Of The Pioneers thwart a bunch of saboteurs, and still get back in time for the rodeo..

Other than that, Roy just stayed Roy.. With Gene Autry in the Army Air Corps, Roy Rogers had the top cowboy spot..

  • What a great song to describe Roy Rogers as "The King of the Cowboys". Love the arrangement with the steel guitar. A class act in every way. Good job Dusty!

  • Roy Roger Will Be Missed By Me....He Was A True American Hero...!!!.

  • I miss Roy, Dale, Buttermilk, Trigger, Bullet, Nelly Belle & Pat Brady.

It's a shame I am going to outlive them all.

  • Congratulations, Dusty. You had the greatest dad ever! I'd say. "God bless you," but He clearly already has!

  • When the Western movies was a favorite gender of the moviegoers thera are two kinds of Westerns movies: the "A" made by the big studios and the "B" produced by the Poverty Row as were named Republic Pictures and others alike. Roy Rogers was then "The King of the Cowboys". John Wayne was for 25 years in a row among the Top Ten Movie Stars. - Darci

  • Just so you really know is that John Wayne is truly the Duke and is even a far much better actor than Roy Rogers and Gene Autry as I think John Wayne is truly the real Duke and is #1 and top of the line and is even far much better and a lot more popular than Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, do you really agree and understand? Say that "The Duke" is even the greatest cowboy of them all and John Wayne was really popular of the rodeo and is much better than Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, do you really agree?

  • @COWBOYMACLEOD Dusty has a great voice. I will admit I was surprised he has such a nice voice and I've heard him yodel just like his dad did. As far as the best cowboy ever - I always put John Wayne in a category of his own. He didn't sing and he didn't go around mainly chasing crooks and roping cattle like Roy and Gene did. I have always loved John. However, he wore so many hats that I personally don't say he's the greatest cowboy of them all - he's the Duke of course. - Paula

  • @COWBOYMACLEOD Mac, these dark days are no time for us old timers to be divided. Hoppy, Gene and Roy were men entirely different from The Duke, but our generation looked up to them all. In 2011, we need what they all gave us more than we ever have. The Duke made us want to be STRONG. Hoppy, Gene and Roy made us want to be GOOD. Neither means much without the other.

  • @theshadow1932 Mac, these fewk days are a little real defenite me for us old timers to be divided. The Duke, but in our eyes, there'll forever, ever, ever and ever again be another John Wayne. There'll forever, ever and ever again be another John Wayne, like there's gonna also forever and ever again be another John Denver, as in 2011 (as there'll again be another 1999 and the 1999 rodeo season), we need to bring the past back to life as the Duke made us want to be STRONG there'll be another Duke

  • @theshadow1932 You almost made me cry, with that statement.. Like so many kids, I wanted to be like ALL of them. Tim Holt; Wild Bill Elliott; Allan 'Rocky' Lane; Rex Allen; Charles 'Durango Kid' Starrett; Duncan 'Cisco Kid' Renaldo.. They were all someone to look up to.. I love that statement. I'm gonna steal it, and, post it on FACEBOOK for all to see! John Wayne made us want to be strong; Hoppy, Gene, and Roy-and, all the rest, made us want to be good.. Many of us tried to live up to it..

  • @zipper179 Take it with my full blessings, Mi Amigo. Dusty must be one special dude to have rated a dad like The King. I didn't get to meet him, while he was here. My greatest dream is that someday, he'll be generous enough to shake my less than worthy hand.

  • @theshadow1932 We old time baby boomers had it good, I think.. In this day and age, it is difficult to believe that looked up to characters who referred to women as 'maam', and didn't have to cuss to get his point across..

Can you imagine, a hero, with a clean shirt, and looks as if he bathes..?

  • @zipper179 I don't have to imagine, compadre. It's the way I live. The delightful thing is that even the most cynical "new woman", down deep in her little girls' heart, responds to the archetype. She may smirk, but the laugh is affected and never reaches her sad, misty eyes. She may deny it, but she wants to fall into the brawny arms of the very hero that we guys still wish to be. Let's keep trying. Imagine what a whizz-bang of a world this'll be if we ever meet in the middle!

  • @COWBOYMACLEOD Your comments are so on the mark..! But, we also have to realize that after the success of 'STAGECOACH', the Duke's days as a B-movie cowboy was about to be history.. He had shown he could act, with ace director, John Ford, at the helm.. Gene Autry, for example, never claimed to be a great actor; he, like many of that genre, had found his niche and stayed there.. Not even with the shortage of leading men, during WWII, could tempt our cowboy heroes to leave that genre..

  • William MacLeod is truly the King of the Ropers (The man from Utah, The Desert Trail) :)
