This seems to be the only time when Ernie doesn't create a disturbance at the movies. Bert does though and even Ernie gets a bit annoyed with his buddy.
I think it was this one, but these skits used to frighten me when I was little. I don't know why. They're awesome, and Maria does a great Charlie Chaplin impersonation.
Oh my gosh, I've waited forever to see this scene again! I remembered the lady crying over the smashed cake the most, as a kid it made me want to cry too. Thanks so much for posting!!
OMG FINALLY! This is the Bert and Ernie movie skit I was looking for! "I liked the fly, what did you like Ernie?" "I liked the part where I spilled my popcorn all over you" *Ernie Laugh* Gotta love it. Long live the 1980s!
This was the first time I looked closely and saw who was playing the couple. It really makes sense. But what I remember the most is the cake getting ruined. I wouldn't have had that bad of a reaction though.
That might be true. Or maybe she was sad because the picnic was ruined, or she was sad because she felt sorry that Maria/Charlie Chaplin got his/her hand messed up from the cake and the fly never got caught that was sitting on the cake.
Before the movie started, with Ernie spilling his popcorn on Bert reminds of when Oscar The Grouch and Telly go to the movie theater where the skits are called Sneak Peek Previews, and everytime Telly sits down in his chair, his chair would break and he would always spill his popcorn.
I think the reason why Linda got sad was because after Maria/Charlie Chaplin hit his/her hand very hard into the cake, the picnic was ruined. Maybe this is the reason why Linda got sad.

It's "The Picnic," giantpanda371, which was also the name of a Mickey Mouse cartoon in 1930.

"I think this was the only time that they went to the movies during the 80s."
There was another one involving a womans hat and Ernie trying to view the movie by avoiding the hat.

That one was from the '70s.

The girl in curls and ribbons must be playing Mabel Normand, who used to be Charlie Chaplin's love interest in his oldest films!

When she smacked the cake, she was just spreading it around so everyone (and every bug) could have some.

Despite the faint audio, this skit was an absolute classic, especially since I only saw it once. Yet another reason to love Ernie and Bert.
