This was the elusive Mach 3 super interceptor America NEEDED. With this aircraft the Soviets would never dare to threaten us with bombers ever again. The YF-12 was another that should have been built, but no, McNamoron was a fool.
Interesting is that the F-108 was to carry 4 20mm cannons and even bombs rather than being a pure interceptor thus was to be something like a multirole craft. However, it was rather underpowered and would not have reached high speed or good maneuverability.
The cancellation of F108 and B70 was a bad decision. ICBMs cannot be used even for deploying logistics to friendly soldiers due to their political sensitivity while the old B-52 will be used until 2030. It is very difficult to shoot down Mach 3 planes at high altitude, maybe only possible with S400 and later(our air force has S400 short range derivatives).or ABLs. Vietcongs would have had very hard time against both B70 and F108(with preprogrammed high alt/speed bombing)
@xxwzaebd The XB70 was cancelled because Air Force and CIA intelligence estimates showed that the aircraft would have been extremely vulnerable to the newest Soviet air defense systems, and therefore a waste of money. It was at that time that fast and high was replaced with fast and low. The XB70 couldn't do that trick.

The B-52 on the other hand was adaptable to using stand-off weapons (the XB-70 was not).
