@DaPhillosophizer sorry about that, as I was saying,I dont know Chinese media & film well enough(especially film meant only for domestic audience) to pick a good example, but a good substitute would be GDR's portrayal of the West as a drug riddled, immoral society where mothers dont raise their kids, people are simply left to be homeless, and where women's rights are trampled on due to constant marketing of thin models. Because average GDR citizens are stuck in the East, it seems plausible .
@DaPhillosophizer My idea- both China & the West are using each other so that citizens in each think,in the West "oh,well at least I'm not in soul crushing, authoritarian China" or if they are Chinese "oh,well at least I'm not in decadent, chaotic West".
Take Z.Liang's Crime & Punishment-as a Western,it feels subversive-switch locations to US,it seems like an artsy episode of Cops. I dont haveggg
Little do you groupie's know that the U.S. is probably one of the greatest forces of censorship, we just happen to do it through corporate control instead of state. Where does this guy get the money to afford such a huge waste of cotton? hmm sounds like somebody with money is endorsing him. I wonder if he questioned American gov't while he was here? NO. This guy is not as much of a free thinker as you guys think, he has a political bias and is a tool of American propaganda. Propaganda wars......
@cgseggal Propaganda for whom? The Chinese people? Humanity? You have to stop assuming that because someone questions one government, they must support another. Ai Weiwei is a people's patriot. A patriot of the world.
Wrong. Propaganda is the Great Firewall- the rigid censorship imposed by the CCP to stop you seeing the facts about Chinese history over the last 62 years.
The reason brave individuals like Ai state their views outside China is because that is the only way they safely can do. Despite what you think, it does not mean they are anti-China. In fact, the exact opposite is true; They are very pro-China, just anti-CCP.
@cgseggal the dude is a sicko.. one of his pics.. he's nude covering his private.. WTF would anyone want to see this fatass naked.. yuck.. thank china for shutting this pervert down
well this man is 10 times more agressive when he speaks Chinese, he is so tender and friendly when speaking English. of course people do not understand what he made, I saw what he did in his video clip of Cai Ni Ma ('f**k your mother'), as a present to Chinese government. It is simply disgusting and mean. He was very arrogant coming back from abroad, showing no respect for any Chinese civil service people whatsoever, as if seeing them as inferiors.
@humenghu I can see why you would say that, but think about it this way too: if you went through everything he has in the effort to make political and social change in a government that refuses to make moves on improving things for their people (although I will say they have progressed some, but not enough), you would probably speak very aggressively in your native language too. His speech was soft spoken in English because I'm sure he didn't want to offend anyone, but wanted to show respect.
@KawaiiHunters Well, I do not know what he did exactly 'to make political and social change in a government '. If you know it, please name one. From what I saw in his work, he just shows contempt to the Chinese government in a pointless manner, this would well be offensive for those who feel proud of being a Chinese citizen and those who refuse to see politics in arts. What would you feel, if one artist of your nationality, ‘artistically’ says ''fk your mother' to your legitimate government.
@humenghu I see what your saying. He hasn't compelled any change, It's tough for anyone to cause change in China's gov't through rebellious art. What I think impresses people about him his willingness to attempt it. I believe he is challenging the citizens' way of thinking hoping there will be a rally for change. It's hard for me to answer your question b/c I'm Chinese-American and an artist myself (by profession & hobby) so the way I view things is from that perspective.
@humenghu In my eyes, an artist has the right to express any concept, emotion, or to challenge the people's view on their own gov't as long as they aren't actually being harmful. I have respect for all types of gov't whether I believe in it or not but I also respect the artistic right to say "fk your mother" through a piece. It makes people say, "why would he say that?" and brings attention to the artist's ideals.
@humenghu Sure, there are other ways to get attention through art, but at the same token, every artist has a different style. Some artists are more bold and others are more low-key, both can be very impactful if an audience allows it to be. I'm going to leave this thread for good now, I don't feel like putting anymore energy into a discussion that seems to be one-sided.
Art is not something you need to put some description on it. If something can really be called art, without a single word, ppl may still be able to appreciate it.
Well, I am sure, without his description/label/tag on his "master pieces" no one can understand what his is going to tell with them. Never mind that is about his politics stand or anything else. There are many ways to display politics views, obviously, the way he chosen can only be describe in one word "hypocritical".
I respect all forms of arts. He is only famous in the eyes of the wersterns only because his political views about China and not because his art work is good. It is known fact, that if you want to be famous and well supported, you just have to act taht you are against Chinese government, and then you wish to fame in the western world.
@wikct2 you seem to be suggesting that his work is bad because he has strong political views. it is the opposite: his work is amazing because it has political meaning and is not just empty formalism like so much other chinese art.
@jerk4990 NO that is not my point. My point is that the West only recognize the art work by Chinese artists who criticize the Chinese government. The western cares more about the criticizing of the Chinese government rather the the actual artistic abilities of the artists when deal with China. There are many similar examples of that. If you are Chinese artist who is not famous but defected to the west, then you can sure that he or she will be famous.
@wikct2 what are "the actual abilities of the artisits"? are they in the fineness of brush-strokes? the objectivity of representation? etc etc. you make a distinction between "actual abilities", i.e. formalism, and politics as if to say that the former is what art is and the latter is something else. the reason chinese art is some of the only good art in the whoel world today is because unlike the meaningless aesthetic bullshit that western "artists" haev been churning out every year...
@jerk4990 ... since warhol, chinese art reconnects with meaning through political critique which actually makes the art interesting. this critique is part of the art, not something tacked on to it at the end to compensate for poor formal quality. so perhaps you are right that only political artists are famous but that is because they are the good artists so different from western ones. hope you're not a fenqing...
@wikct2 Right, because everyone who criticizes the Chinese government is part of an evil Western conspiracy. Are you going to say he's a secret Jew, too?
Our tools of knowledge, power & blame do their work only in those hands in which they belong. China's power is lost, misused & misapplied. Every act of a government, every application of law is action using these implements, these tools. Tools made not by man, but by God. These tools of power, perception & blame will find their rightful owner, despite China's suppressive actions, like a moment finds its time, like cause finds effect. Wherever they may keep him he is loved, competent & free.
He's apparently just been arrested, and the cops have been harassing all of his friends and family, ransacking their homes and taking away their cell phones. The Chinese government's official stance towards human rights activists and the media over this seems to be "nya nya-nya-nya nya, you can't stop us!"

More Chinese need to want such fame.
