I love the idea of socialism ^_^ but if it is Monetary Based Socialism, IT WILL FAIL! Money places a limit on EVERYTHING. The words "socialism" and "capitalism" should be retired; they just get in the way of intelligent discussion. All countries nowadays have mixed economies, and the proper balance between the private and public sectors is up for debate. Here's an interesting fact: Americans spend 23% more IN TAXES to support the public part of their health-care system than Canadians do, and then have to buy private insurance on top of that. That's the price of ideology. (Oh, and Canadians live longer too).
@gspaulsson Its not really "socialism" governing the eurozone. its neo-liberalism and corporatism. They actually had social democracy well before the Euro was ever established. Its just that when countries like Germany get the short end of the stick from EU economic policies, it disrupts everything, and policy makers slash programs like public schooling or social security or public healthcare. Social programs aren't so much the cause as over spending itself, in whatever manifestation it may be.
@JNathanK2011 yes, Europe has moved to the right since Thatcher, but they are still mixed economies. The German like to whine, but they were the big winners in the Eurozone and the Greeks were the big losers. The Euro is valued per the average Eurozone economy, making it cheap for the Germans and expensive for the Greeks. It's a subsidy for German exports and a tax on Greek imports and tourism. No wonder the Greeks are mad at having to take the hit.

When a an American liberal uses the term "socialism", they usually mean social democracy. When an American conservative uses the term, they usually mean Maoism or Marxist-Leninism. Both sides speak a different language, and it causes a lot of confusion and in fighting.
They love social democracy, which Lenin actually hated and termed yellow socialism, meaning a balless compromise that got in the way of his vison. Lenin's style of socialism was a state monopoly of all property. Social democracy allows a propertied class to keep their assets, but they use taxation to pay for services that everyone has access to. Socialism is about eliminating the rich. Social democracy is about keeping the gap between the rich and the poor from getting to 3rd world conditions.

@Dealit707 I think they mean countries like Switzerland, Germany, Norway, etc. They're fairly industrious, have high standards of living, and have socially democratic systems in which tax money is used to pay for social safety netting. They're often called socialist, but they really aren't, because socialism's objective is the elimination of class. Social democracy, on the other hand, preserves the capital class but subsidizes the poor to prevent them from falling into dire poverty.

The United States has subsidized European defense budgets since the end of the Second World War and especially since the end of the Cold War. The words "socialism" and "capitalism" should be retired; they just get in the way of intelligent discussion. All countries nowadays have mixed economies, and the proper balance between the private and public sectors is up for debate. Here's an interesting fact: Americans spend 23% more IN TAXES to support the public part of their health-care system than Canadians do, and then have to buy private insurance on top of that. That's the price of ideology. (Oh, and Canadians live longer too).

Its just that when countries like Germany get the short end of the stick from EU economic policies, it disrupts everything, and policy makers slash programs like public schooling or social security or public healthcare. Social programs aren't so much the cause as over spending itself, in whatever manifestation it may be.

The German like to whine, but they were the big winners in the Eurozone and the Greeks were the big losers. The Euro is valued per the average Eurozone economy, making it cheap for the Germans and expensive for the Greeks. It's a subsidy for German exports and a tax on Greek imports and tourism. No wonder the Greeks are mad at having to take the hit.

When a an American liberal uses the term "socialism", they usually mean social democracy. When an American conservative uses the term, they usually mean Maoism or Marxist-Leninism. Both sides speak a different language, and it causes a lot of confusion and in fighting.

Lenin's style of socialism was a state monopoly of all property. Social democracy allows a propertied class to keep their assets, but they use taxation to pay for services that everyone has access to. Socialism is about eliminating the rich. Social democracy is about keeping the gap between the rich and the poor from getting to 3rd world conditions.

@Dealit707 I think they mean countries like Switzerland, Germany, Norway, etc. They're fairly industrious, have high standards of living, and have socially democratic systems in which tax money is used to pay for social safety netting. They're often called socialist, but they really aren't, because socialism's objective is the elimination of class. Social democracy, on the other hand, preserves the capital class but subsidizes the poor to prevent them from falling into dire poverty.

I believe that certain social programs are needed, like welfare, but it is only suppose to be temporary to help someone out. Totally correct. The US has an excellent socialist program for war vets. It works because the conservatives are afraid to attack it. The rest of your programs are constantly under attack, being messed with and underfunded. Thats why they're shit. And the underfunding part is due in LARGE part by your massive expenditure on the military. Did you know military expenditure increased worldwide by 20% last year and >19% of that was the US. You already have 10x bigger military than anyone else!

Great Post...So many people deny the fact that not only does Socialism exist in America...but the US economy relies on Communist and Socialist Nations to be profitable itself. European's pay for all their programs with their tax money. Lets find out how much more they would be willing to spend if the US government left & told them to pay for their own defense, causing their already unbelievably high tax rates to shoot up. This is an unfair comparison.

The United States has subsidized European defense budgets since the end of the Second World War and especially since the end of the Cold War. The Europeans wanted the U.S. to do the dirty work in Libya because they have let their equipment become old & outdated. Not to mention U.S. bases on the continent.

The US spends more then all of Europe combined on military and quite a bit more then even China. Hell the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have costed us over 1 trillion, with plenty of people profiting too.
I think there needs to be a better balance.

The U.S. needs to cut defense spending and other federal agencies like the DEA. Hell ending the foolish drug war would save us billions. If US subsidization of a foreign nations defense ended how much more would they spend? Tell me how anyone could know that? They are already going through austerirty IE they don't have extra money taxes would have to rise to make up the cost.
