Because the nation is so young the, lack of any established opposition is worrisome because of the ability of the Party in power to abuse the system in the event of complete party control of all positions of significance. The Military just received a 40% universal pay raise, half of the supreme court justices were hand picked by Hugo Chavez, His brother is the Mayor of the largest city. His party controls the legislature. Every word from his lips is mandatory for the press to broadcast.

Fox News, the Tea Party, Green Peace, the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, the NRA, various religious organisations both Christian and minority, the KKK, the Communist Party of America, Weatherman Underground, The Black Panthers, State Governments, and thousands of privatively owned radio stations.

As for Hugo, his detractors are louder than ever, and their everywhere over there! I mean, they have Fox News over there, believe me, I checked! What more does it take to convince you that freedom of speech is alive and well in Venezuela?

@Aenkelle There are many definitions of Freedom of speech and I am sure that Venezuela has done nothing of the sort to restrict that right. What worry's me is freedom of the press. Every major rival of the current political party, not just Hugo, is fractured and divided by the fact that they cant agree on how to compete against him without cutting back spending. Their is no clear opposition though there is clear resistance. This is quite odd in a democracy especially in one as young as Venezuela

@lostend1 I agree, it's a bit of an anomaly. Same thing happens in Mexico with the left's opposition, it is fractured and divided. However, my worries are laid to rest when I see the enormous degree of Venezuelan participation in elections and national referendums. The will of the people is there, IMO.

I have no doubt Hugo will day garner enough opposition to unite his opponents, though (not because of lack of merit on his part, it's just the nature of democracy).

Chavez was resoundingly re-elected by the people of Venezuela. To a great extent, that speaks for itself. He would not be the first nor the last to misquote someone, and that does not make him a villain.

My opinion toward Chavez is strong because I can't trust someone who speaks to the world with such confidence as if he knew exactly how the world functions. When I refer to low I am talking about someone who takes advantage of his power to enrich his own family, which by all means is corruption.

@8fratello My opinion toward him shouldn't bother you, i hold no power or authority and don't wish to ever hold a governmental position. Eliminating public bidding for projects makes government more powerful and bureaucracy unbearable for business people. This is not a fair practice of authority, and no one show hold such a power in a democracy. Aside from feeling that Chavez misquotes important tinkers, there should be some respect when using words. I respect your opinion.

He was the leader of a failed attempted military coup back in the ninety's, wears military uniforms all the time, buys Russian weaponry with oil money, declares himself the great socialist revolutionary, threatens the United States in every speech he makes, and jails all his political opponents.

Basically he does appear allot like Qaddafi or Castro. But only in appearance.

Thank you for your comment. Chavez is not going to make everyone happy. However, it cannot be denied that under his leadership more people in Venezuela have come out of poverty. Those most unhappy with Chavez are the old Investor Class who enriched themselves making deals with foreign investors.
