Freedom occurs in nature. That brute freedom allows me to pick up a gun and suppress your right to live. Liberty is not "what I want to do" because again, I probably would not pick up a gun and shoot you if I did not want to do it (with that action as a demonstration of free-range). Liberty is what exists within a social structure that observes rights. The right of the people to make the laws to govern themselves is an act of polity.

And indeed, both conservatives and liberals( not called so then yet) have carried "classical liberal" values from that point on; however, part of the old conservative creed continued, and that is what led to the split of the party; the group of democrats who kept their promise to let slavery die down as agreed (i do not remember the date, but if i am not mistaken, new blacks, either born or emigrated could not be enslaved?) left and formed the republican party

The issue is not who were conservatives or not, for it is a slippery slope, where both creeds shared values form the classical liberalism; the problem was that most in the democratic party did not renegaded to their old, mostly social, conservatism. meaning that a few, white and rich male, made the rules to their convenience; the first issue was slavery, followed by segregation, women's right, gay rights,religion, freedom of choice being some of the issues

so, any entity that discriminates or denies people their rights, is conservative on that specific topic; for it may practice values from other ideologies, similar or divergent, regarding political, economical, even social issues; it is very likely that many of those liberating slaves were conservatives in matters of women's rights, religion, abortion and gays, making them conservatives as well but not on the issue of slavery.

i know very liberal people who do not want gays to adopt, hence they carry that conservative value

If God exists, he obviously is not a cruel dictator. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to write your idiotic posts. Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Stalin, all the murderous dictators had one thing in common, they took over the church and established themselves as the supreme authority. Our founders knew how dangerous that was, so they established the pre set belief that rights come from above human authority to take away. Liberals want to abolish that belief, for the obvious reasons.
