Andy bought the car a couple of years ago. I was part owner of the car about 8 years ago and it's gone through a couple owners since. It's a great car and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I always wanted to drive it at Road America, where Swede's best finish in Trans-Am was there with a 2nd place. Have fun!
A clear lap is in the low 2:20s. The main problem is that the car has a 4.10 rear end and with the 4 speed, top speed is limited to 160 mph at redline. It was a ton of fun, anyway.
So maybe in the high teens with a better gear? I know these cars have to be destroked to like305 inches or something....what kinda HP do you get out of them?
Hey Gary, two questions: are there any more of these videos around besides this and Goodwood and Laguna, and do you guys actualy race in this series anymore or is it just exibition?
It's the original 4 speed gearbox, which was supposed to have the stock cast iron case, but this one is aluminum and they covered it in cast iron spray to pass the "magnet test". It has a 4.10 rear end and we topped out at 160 mph in 4th at 7200 rpm. Yes, that is an original GT40 that blew by me, driven by Lee Holman of Holman-Moody fame. Great stuff.
As a note, there is a genuine Trans am 68 mustang in australia that i once watched at a local track. Sadly it was lapped by a factory V8 Holden 4 door sedan(pontiac GTO in USA) in a match race, the progress in chassis and brakes?? Amazing. But also as a note, there have been a few "rare" cars bought in,back in '69 a canadian cum aussie raced a trans am mustang and competed against a guy who bought in at the time 2 COPO '69 427 camaro's.one 4 speed track,2nd auto drag.great stuff.
Very Cool Vid Gary. I love these cars. Got to work on a couple of them in the 90s. Never got to go to a race, though. Now THAT is Stock Car Racing!! Thanks for posting.
I was wondering about the tire issue Gary. Do you have to pretty much feather the throttle out of a turn to keep from spinning the tires or can you nail the gas right away?
No mashing the gas off the corner, as you can lay rubber fairly easily. The key is to be smooth and not get much wheel spin. It has more power than traction with those vintage bias ply race tires. Just like the old days! ;^)
Nope, that would be uncle Bruce! ;^) I was raised by the family since I was 4 yrs old. It's been a pleasure to drive the car at events as a way of keeping Swede's memory alive.
i hate to see this... she deserves at least 5 gears

either that is real loose or it should be faster. definately my dream car though

It was a little loose and we couldn't pass in the infield at that point. The Mustang had acceleration problems on right hand corners and held us up.

It's a 303.8 and is at 500 HP and redline is 8500 rpm. We kept it down to 7500 to increase engine life.

It can be a handful at times. Not bad with new tires and a full load of fuel. ;^)

Cool Video! What is your car running? A 340?
emoneybagz23 5 years ago
Actually, a destroked 340 down to 303.8, as you had to run a 5 liter in Trans-Am. Original redline at 8500 rpm, but we kept it down at 7200 rpm. :-)
