It's beyond a nightmare when a someone dies, not only the tragic lost life - but for the people left behind. I have had one student die and one injured. Please slow way down at stop signs - Please stop at red lights (good time to practice 'track standing') CARS don't see us! I ride my bike every day, and I almost hit a bike rider with my car. He had no lights, no brakes - cut across the sidewalk, jumped the curb in front of me, I rammed on my brakes - then he swore at me and kicked my car ...

Thanks for that video: I grew up in the flats of western germany called Niederrhein, near Netherland! - Everybody goes by bike here from the age of 4 to 100 !! Several towns in the neighborhood have build separate bikelanes to make it more safe for cyclists...

Ich bin schon ewig nicht mehr Rad gefahren, auch wenn das bei uns eigentlich ungefährlich ist. 1. ist es hügelig, 2. sind alle wichtigen Einrichtungen zu weit weg, um sie bequem mit dem Fahrrad zu erreichen, und 3. ist es zur Zeit eh zu kalt. @ThePunisher1978 In Frankfurt gibt es scheinbar wirlich noch keine Ghost Bikes. In Deutschland scheinbar nur in Berlin, Koeln und Rosenheim.

In Manhattan gibt's auch so einige. Aber in einer so grossen Stadt mit so vielen Menschen, Autos, Fahrraedern fallen diese stillen Gespensterraeder gar nicht so einfach auf. Aber wenn man weiss, dass es da sieht, bemerkt man es jedes mal.

Lass mich wissen, ob Du in Berlin welche gefunden hast.

Wow! I have seen one of these and I had no idea why it was painted white. It was just removed last week on one of the corners of McGuiness Blvd.

@kazanjianm I'm especially happy to have been able to give you an explanation for the white bicycles. It's too bad that the bike on McGuiness was removed. Even worse is that there ever was a reason it had to be put up. I used to live East of McGuiness and had to cross it all the time on my way to the train station. Pretty intense street.

Hab jetzt etwas gestoebert und festgestellt, dass es in LA auch Ghost Bikes gibt - scheinbar aufgestellt von vier verschiedenen Gruppen. Also in der klassischen Auto-Stadt doch leider das gleiche Problem - auch wenn man viel weniger Fahrradfahrer zu sehen scheint.

As a professional driver all my life I have seen many motor vehicles show a complete disregard for the safety of bicyclist and pedestrians. I have also seen many bicyclist riding unaware of traffic around them.We need to share the road friends. A little courtesy from the motorist could safe them from a life time of regret. I think you are so right. It takes all sides to pay more attention. I've seen many bicyclists engage in pretty risky behavior or make a bad call when it came to their own safety. I'm really trying to be better at that. But having better bike lanes and strong awareness campaign for motorists would surely help in NYC.

@FrankBenlin Michael, that's terrible - both about all your accidents and about your friend. Hit and runs are so incredible. Supposedly there is some strange "flight trigger" that is switched during a moment of panic or stress.

The missing ghost bikes may have been removed by the authorities. I know places where the ghost bikes are considered to be a "hazard" and are hauled off by the street department or by the police. Too bad they aren't as efficient at removing the hazard that killed the cyclist.

Honestly these bikes still get me, too. Even when I'm editing a video - so being kind of focused on something else. It's heart-breaking. One of the women who died was related to someone I knew. It made it even more real. I really truly wish people were more careful and considerate.

Es ist immer wieder erstaunlich, auf was für Ideen die Leute kommen...Ich selber habe einige meiner Foto-und Film-Ausflüge auch mit dem Rad gemacht und es ist auch hierzulande nicht mehr ganz ungefährlich, vor allen Dingen in den Großstädten.

Chilling video Luci. A very good friend of mine was knocked off his bike at a junction and "left for dead" by the white van driver who sped off at great speed. It took months of rehabilitation to get back to normal having had several broken ribs, pelvis and arm. The police never did find the culprit. They encourage us to use the bike more often but do nothing to really protect the riders from such accidents. We have cycle lanes and junction markings but they are ignored by motorists!

What a horrible story! So sorry for your friend. I guess he was lucky to survive. Amazing how people can just speed off from a scene like that.

And you're so right about the double standard of how people are verbally encouraged to leave the car at home and ride but there are no effective campaigns to make riding safer. They're trying in NYC now.
