  • You need strong legs for bench press because if your bench press form is the correct one, you are using your legs as well as arms-shoulders-chest to drive the bar up. I think of the bench press as the marriage of my torso to 2 triangles, the triangle being one of the strongest weight-supporting geometric shapes.

  • The 1st triangle is my upper body, with each hand a vertex and the point where my shoulder blades meet the bench as the remaining, base vertex. That along with my torso is where most of my power comes from.

  • The 2nd important bench-press triangle is my lower body in position sitting on the bench, with each foot a vertex and the point slightly below my navel (some call it the "chi" point) where I concentrate my power breathing at as the remaining vertex.

  • The first triangle obviously needs to be done right or I lose the bar or do a sloppy lift. The second triangle is just as important, though, because it's where my body derives almost all of its stability from. For instance, that lower triangle has to be wide enough that I can correct sideways bar sway with my arms through the power of my oblique torso muscles (lats et al) and shoulders. Without a stable platform I could have the world's strongest lats but I'll still lose control of the bar.

  • Also, I use my legs to power the bar up. For some reason, and don't ask me to explain it, when I push hard near the end of the eccentric negative motion and keep my legs generating force to the top of the positive motion, I can lift more weight. I don't know why it works, it just does, but only when my form is correct. If my lower triangle is too wide, though, my legs are spread too far apart and the transfer of force ends up dissipating in my lower back, which could injure my back.

(unless one use steroid he already has these level so high it wont change shit). And a strong upper body with tiny legs looks retarded.

The video isn't the greatest quality so its hard to see the back arch that ALL power lifters create by driving their feet into the ground when benching. Proper stance can easily add 4" or more to the level of your gut. And as a matter of fact, I do lift, hence my knowledge of proper power lifting stance that you clearly don't understand and are therefore not qualified to comment on this video.
