Hey JD! I purchased a set of diff graphite pencils for learning how to draw better, and I find that they all give me the same look... Am I doing something wrong or are my pencils crappy? Help! :(
@vetricelvan No not at all. Each has their place. You can do some things with graphite that you can't do with charcoal - extremely smooth textures for instance.
Incredible eye opener! thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge and posting these videos. I can't wait to try these techniques,I've ruined many drawings trying to achive these values with graphite. I would like to see a demo of how you draw the taped picture.
JD. I bought your book a long time ago when I stumbled onto your work over at ArtPapa and it's still one of my favorites. In fact, I recommend it as a 'must have' to other artists who contact me for tips. Thank you for sharing, and I look forward to one day attending one of your workshops.
I have to say I really admire and love your works, so I think it is really great and helpful to see your videos, you can be understand quite well (English is not my native language and I have trouble understanding it).
I used to have much trouble with the reflections made by graphite pencils, it was always shining. Two years ago I found an 8B "pencil" which was MUCH darker than any other I have used... I always wondered why. I guess there is also mixed a bit carbon into it :D
can't wait for the blending video! Just picked up drawing again since literally high school. Really enjoying it, I can definitely draw well but really need some technique- I can make beautiful portraits- I'm really good with the eyes and noses but still looks smudgy and not truly finished. Thank you, thank you
Excellent video Bro.. I have been following you since I began drawing.. and can't wait to see more of your instructional videos! Thanks for doing this!
Great video and lovely work. Might need to pick up some of the pencils you mentioned. The shine of graphite can be distracting unless you blend it with a paper that has the proper tooth. That said, any suggestions for paper?
JD. Its great to see you on youtube, I have purchased your book and recently the Primo drawing set (both great) after drawing with graphite for many years its a different feeling using charcoal, very scratchy and lots of drag. What would be cool is if we could email you some of our work for you to critique, I would like to attend your workshop if you ever plan on doing one on the east coast "NewEngland" neighborhood. Thanks for taking the time to show us how its done.Vic
@1934rod Try that "Kimberly 9xx b" I mention in the video. It has carbon mixed in it and is very dark with no reflective shine.
I'd love to come to New England for a workshop. My schedule is set for 2012, but I may consider one in the fall of 2013. Do you want to help set it up?
I always like to try new pencils. I'll see if I can find them. The General's Kimberly graphite pencils I've been using have worked great. The company has been around for over 120 years and they are also the only pencils still made in the US. I know you are frome the UK but for me finding great companies and quality products produced here is important to me.
I'll see if I can round up some of those pencils to try though so thanks for sharing
Hi. Mr Hillberry as an experienced artist myself I have been using this technique for a number of years, and find the best graphite brand of pencils to mix with charcoal and carbon (pencil or powder) are the japanese brand mitsubishi Hi-uni 22 degrees ranging 10H - 10B The harder pencils are fantastic for creating silk glass and metal textures, I live in the UK and found these pencils on Ebay from a japanese seller. I own a copy of your book and highly recommend to others to buy. fantastic work
Hey JD love the videio and your workshops. Any idea as to when you will complete your full length ones for purchase? Again, I want to thank you for the one on one instructions you gave me in your workshops...they really help take my art to the next level.
I'm working on the free ones for now, just to make sure I get all the bugs out first. Just make sure you are signed up on my email list to be notified when the full length ones are ready. There will also be some special offers and tutorials that are only available to those on my list.
Awesome video JD! You did a great job describing the differences in the graphite and charcoal. I can look back to this video if I need a refresher course. : )
Hey JD I have a question, will you be making videos teaching the same techniques you teach on certain subjects at your workshops like on trompe l'oeil for example?
Yes. I'll be making videos explaining all my techniques. Some of the basic ones like this will be fee. Other, full length, ones that go into great detail explaining exactly how to draw certain subjects will be able to purchase for download. The more popular the free videos are, the more of them I will be able to do. If you like this free content, please "subscribe", "like" and "share" them.
Awesome! Thanks for your response. I'll be looking forward to seeing your other free videos and I'll definitely be purchasing the other videos you make. I hope they'll be available soon! Thanks again.
Very interesting, looking forward to future videos of your work and techniques. Thanks for sharing with us. I would purchase your videos if you sell them.
I'm working on it now. It will cover many of the blending techniques and tools I use to render a variety of textures. Make sure you are signed up on my channel see it.
I would suggest you try using smoother papers for smooth subjects and rougher papers for rougher subjects. If you are trying to get really smooth, soft textures, don't use a rough paper. It will fight you all the way...and win.
What fantastic drawings!! <3
