amazing detailed review, thanx alot, im getting a macbook pro i5, and the apogee will be amazing for my production with the macbook, u helped me make my mind on the apogee duet, the bad thing is that it doesn't have a midi in, and i have an m-audio midi controler i just need to check if it can be used as a usb midi, thanx alot buddy, best review iv ever watched ;)
@TheNewHipHop1 - any mic - choose which suits the track/vocal - "Also, what else should be necessary other than the Duet/Mic/Laptop to record a great song?" - talent ;)
@charanga1 - some years back i'd have maybe agreed, but nowadays there's so much choice for usb master keyboards & cheap usb MIDI interfaces. Yes it may seem an extra expense if you've previously invested in a traditional socketted MIDI master keyboard/controller, but a cheap usb MIDI interface is only a small price extra to pay to buy into the DUET prestine sound.
@dancetech Agreed! I'm not knocking the product, just pointing out something that they probably overlooked in their design. What's your take on the presonus firewire mobile?
@dancetech I just noticed that they've announced a new Apogee Duet 2 USB! RE: MIDI What's the best choice of a USB midi adaptor to be worthy ;-) of working with the duet? M-Audio Uno, Behringer something? (I would not want MIDI induced timing issues to become a weak link in the studio)
Got mine today and love it ! - This controller is so good it doubles now as a MACKIE BIG KNOB without the extra money ! LOL - Volume control right at your finger tips has saved me an extra $300 getting this great Duet !! beautiful sound !! too !!
I have a new 27" imac i7 being deliverd any day now im looking to buy an interface and this seems great but Im going to need the midi keyboards to play the sounds from the logic pro and i dont see any midi inputs on the interface so how would that work, may be i have missed something here,
@nodnarb3187 hahahahahah shut up you stupid yank, that is how aluminium is pronounced in proper english (not your lazy version) well actually - al- ew-min-ee-am. Theres no fucking 'LOO' and you thick bastards miss out the last 'I' when you pronounce it. God you are a nation of imbeciles.
Great series of vids. We want to use the Duet live with two vocalist accessing Mainstages' vocal effects. Would this be possible, and do you think it's robust enough for gigging with.
Your voice is so soothing. I get shivers running down my spine just listening to your voice. No gay man here, but seriously when I'm tired, I just turn your videos on :)
Do you know of any source that has technical information about the dynamic range (A/D, D/A converters), signal-to-noise ratio, etc. of this apogee unit? I'm trying to decide between the duet and other units (like the motu ultralite) and am finding a relative dearth of technical information about these units.
actually, i am looking at these cables coming out of the break out... and i am thinking: i am going to use evidence cables 1/4" thick and what i get out of this nice grey "pijo" box is this shoe string??? sorry, saffire pro 24 all the way for almost the same price - but nevertheless... nicely done video - almost a sales pitch
I get some sort of delayed signal from my duet to my monitors.. Is there some sort of adjustment I need to do so that my guitar being played, to the out put of the monitors are in "real" time?
go to the audio hardware settings and check the samples for the core audio duet driver - it goes down to 32 samples, just change it to 32 or 64 or 128 samples and apply.
Yo, I got myself a duet and man is it great.... I am very pleased with it...I can stand by this review and only agree with everything he says. Nice review man. You should be Italian with your hand gestures :) hahaha
THANKS! Thank you so much for your review, it is really helpful and has convinced me to buy the product. Apogee should really hire you as their rep. 10/10 on your review!
thank you very much. you was very kind uploading this video. I 'm Apple dealer and a client ask for one. I had inmediatly a general (and not so) idea of the product.
so do i connect the duet with another interface? oh by way, can i connect the duet with an audio interface and vocal processor, all together at the same time when recording? but i really still dont get what a duet is for...can somebody tell me?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
man i was just asking...what's up with u bro...u think u know so much too? oh wait...your a negro right? lol...oh yea...forgot...LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL
Thank you for a very comprehensive overview of the Duet - very useful. The unit has been invaluable to me whilst on location with my macbook as well as at home. I simply don't understand what nimashamsdotcom is banging on about in his comments. The whole point of the unit is to be PORTABLE with pristine ADA convertors and minimal connectivity. If he wants all of the features he mentioned, why not simply buy the Ensemble or another fully featured Interface! It seems a totally pointless post.
not meaning to be harsh, it's just that the device is stereo, and therefore thats what it is, you know that if you buy one. If ou want more outs, then buy a devie with more outs. Also, if apogee offered more outs on that device then you'd pay alot more for more apogee quality converters. They make the ensemble for those wanting more outputs (and inputs) it is perfect for the typical homestudio musician who works in stereo. only peopel doing video need 5;1 or 7:1 really
to finish my reply, the duet is NOT for home users wanting to watch dvd's on their mac. It is a tool for studio musicians. Those who need surround mixing as i said have tons of options. How can you criticise as a GRIPE a stereo i/o device because it is only stereo out? thats completey idiotic.
You might as well criticise a bmw 3 series because you cant use it transport 8x4 sheets of flooring sheet. Also, name me one stereo i/o audio device with TWO headphone sockets? The duet is a stereo i/o device giving apogee quality at a low end price, & it does that superbly. Only a tiny minority of specialist users will invest in a suitable surround setup for mixing. For example, bolt on a Logictec surround speaker system to your mac digital out & instant surround. or go for a bigger setup.
If you wanna save money. They have The Apogee Duet Mini for $150...
it's nice but it doesn't have inputs or outputs, so you can't do nothing...but it's pretty to look at.....and it's made of chocolate. Nice gift for my girlfriend
I own the Duet and when you pair it up with Apples Logic you have the most solid and stable DAW combo out there. also the duet will allow you to record up to 24bit/96K. which is what most pro recording studios run at. Hope this helps.
Something I think people should know is that the Apogee Duet is one of only two firewire interfaces that apogee really has out right now with the other being the apogee ensemble which cost about $2000US . The apogee duet runs about $500 US. Well one of the other things I believe that everyone should know is that the duet also has built in 2 AD/DA convertors that apogee is know for. You don't need to take my advice for it check there web site.
I am sooo saving up for a new IMAC 20inch - with DUET.... I'm sick of PC and my MOTU ultralite.. It sounds like the DUET sounds better too... so that's the route I'm going to take, thanks for the great review my friend...
I'm from Britain too... born and raised, but now live in Canada.. :)
I do voice overs and i use monster caples with my mixer those mic cables look a wee bit small i am worried my condenser mic might not sound well with it what do you think?
i second that... i used windows for years.. running protools le and an mbox1 then 2. last year bought logic 8 and a mac book pro and havent even thought about using protools since, now im recording again i need hardware to run mics, this interface seems perfect, i only found out about it yesterday but im definately getting one... thanks for the help mate

word on the street is that the connectors actually suck (break over time) and you should pay an extra $100 for an acceptable break-out box.
