personally i always run reason from within FL or pro tools.
I must say u are GREAT and making A SOUND, but sadly the actually writing of the riffs and chords weren't the best ever. but rly nice man! it turned on alot of lights in my head for actual sound construction which is rly hard to find on youtube :)
This tutorial is amazing. Thank you for not only being thorough in your explanations but also being entertaining. It's hard to do both but you did it. Great job man!
@kyleahlstrom yeah, he's way better at this that hydlide24, who's just an arrogant twat, poor at explaining things and barely understandable through his thick accent
I dislike this genera of music (too gay clubbish for me) but it has great aspects to steal and put in my bag of tricks. Another Great Tutorial! Don't ever stop making them. My reason knowledge and overall song composition knowledge has grown exponentially since I started using your tutorials, and I've been doing this for years.
Couldn’t agree more about polystylism either – I’ll certainly be trying out the possibilities of combining trance elements with by beloved progressive metal and checking out your other tutorials to aid my understanding of electronic genres.
Brilliant tutorials, really clear and concise but at the same time allowing scope for some individual deviations too. The main reason I watched the series was to get a grasp on the production elements of trance but along the way I learnt much more than I’d expected to and all of it with some amusingly bizarre linguistic moments of all too rarely encountered intellectual humour.
I hear some tight trance tracks where the kick is pumping hard and some where you can barley hear the kick .... i guess if the kick hits when you put it solo in cubase it will hit ? When I mix a synth on top of the kick I find myself trying to keep kick hitting loud like it hits in Solo mode - this cuases me to bring down the synth to lower lvs and never feels right ( Even eq or compression ) Tried it all ... Could I send you a sample ?
Thanks for the effort that you really take time and show us and share you're tricks etc :) Seriously thanks man, I'd love to make a tutorial with you 1 day or co-lab =) Cheer up since, what you are doing is really valuable and people pay alot of money to learn this lol, and we got it all up here for free. Amazing isn't it? :)
@DeadHeroDubstep no the best one ive heard is "start speaking in french, using questionable religious imagery in your album covers and you will not find anyone who can resist dancing to your new dirty pumping electro bassline
I think I just might get Reason because of this tutorial. Even if I don't get Reason, I still learned a heck of a lot. Thank you for putting the time and effort into making it!
Just as an update. Reason 5 arrived today and after loading the 7 day trance I'd made of this song the PC breezed it! Well done the 'Propellerheads' I can dance my mouse all over the screen and edit on the fly. This is such a good programme I've had them all including the updates from 1 through to 5.
Clear and concize. (lol) I've learned a lot including the fact that I need a new PC it gave up the ghost on the last arrangement. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge Dave.
This set of tutorials is beautiful and very comprehensive, it explains in detail all phases of creating a trance song with hints that the result sounds "pro" ... Although I am far from being bilingual (I'm french) it will help me enormously to improve my Reason skills, thank you :)
Hey Man... i'm recently getting into mastering my tracks. Ive been reading Bob Katz Mastering book. Any other recommendations for me?
Perhaps I could add u on msn or something like this for some tips tricks etc? Ive been producing for years, but never really mastered until recently as taking things more seriously.
Bloody hell... I've been listening to loads of your tutorials and then you said at 5.23 your band is You And What Army. I remember seeing you at the Kasbah in Coventry when I went there randomly for a night out and thought you were great and shook your hand. I somehow feel this is a small world moment...
I raise my glass today to you sir boy in a band! If you havent been knighted already then maybe you should be. Ive never been able make my drums sound as crisp and well engineered before. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and allowing others to enhance thier creativity.
fine track. i would have the the sum of the synths made a little bit more quiet or compressed again in the sum, but that's a questin of everyone's own taste.
fine track. i would have the the sum of the synths made a little bit more quiet or compressed again in the sum, but that's a questin of everyone's own taste.
Dave, I would like some one to one tutorials, i've sent a couple of emails but I guess you're busy with the latest part with you're band performing those festivals, let me know if you still are doing them.
great tutorials!! its the help a beginner needs to get the feeling on what means to produce music and what parts/components is it made off. Tks
I guess my next issue is on how to produce nice midi stuff! As for the rest, I think its about to get vibes that feel like your stuff and get some personality to the tracks to get on the road
i think its a nice arrangment but a lot is left out theres no breaks or fills in the percussion and the main melody is only 2 bars you just kept repeating over and over i think an 8 or 16 bar melody would be more uplifting. other than that its a nice arrangment for someone just starting out.
very awesome! you've done one of my favorite genres proud.
Question about Reason though, does it require a really good sound card to view the songs in the quality and play them as you do? I guess my real question is can you record a high quality version without having it rendered live?
nice tutorial for this song but i have to say the song is kind of a basic one , call me old fashioned but i prefer more melodic melodies not just a few bars melodies.
anyhow im not taking away your talents im sure someone could use your tutorials for there own trance song with there own synths and elements.
hey there, i was just wondering if it's too late to post a video response to this video ? and also, my work looks a bit like yours lol (but not exactly hopefully), anyway i hope to hear from you, or anyone who has the info! thanks...
Hey BiaB, I've checked out your 7 day series and I've found them fairly helpful. Most of the tricks I already knew but its always small things that you learn from others that help you out even more. Thanks for sharing your techniques!
Check out my video response too if you have time! :)
First off all I want to say THANKS for your tutorials, even if someone is using Reason for a long time he can find new ideas by watching your tutorials.
attached there is an Demo-Track I made after watching your "Trance-Tutorial".
It's a bit off Trance :-)) just to show people what else they can do with this tutorial.
i would to say thank you so much dave for your how to videos. ive been watching them for days now, its like im just now learning how to really use reason 4. big ups to you bro, and im sure this is from all us reason users, thanks man so much
LOL. i spent about to long looking for a tutorial for using reason and what frequency etc means. You have given this to me. Thanks man. I hope ot become a composer so ha :P nice one man ;)> EpIctuce tune. 5 stars
posted mah video response, hope you can get around to giving it a listen dave, some much needed criticism and some tips would be greatly appreciated, from anyone really.
I was using Subtractor for pretty much everything until I went through your 7 day and realized just how powerful Thor is. Excellent tutorials dude, picked up a lot of tips from them!
man, you're doing great tutorials!! I use reason for hmm... about 4 years...since our band split up.
i first started with hip hop, then ambient/experimental and know progressive psy/ goa trance.
i would say i know reason very good, but its always an inspiration to view your clips.
..and you're such a thor-freak (yes its real great) ..what about a tutorial how to use all the ins and out on the back??? i used to run audiosamples through thor to use the filters but i failed...
Beginners and more advanced producers are welcome to post their productions as responses, whether they're just starting out by copying to get the hang of it or if they choose to be a bit more creative.
Perhaps you'd like to post your trance song as an example of a more inventive interpretation? :D
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Seeing as you are replying comments I'm going give you some "constructive critism" abt your tutorials! When conveying your instructions too the audience you over emphasis your words thus making it sound like your nervous! Maybe you are, I don't know, but what I do know is tht you should take a minute before speaking jst to carm down and collect yourself, trying not to over compensate, meanwhile I'll work on tht trance song!!
I think he's fine.... Easy to understand and clear with instructions. And with regard to the comment about people posting 'copied work' of course it's going to sound a bit copied, it's work from a tutorial, lol. Lighten up for gawds sake!
Jst bcos I posting critism doesn't mean I'm all hyped up, in fact I'm rather the opposite, anyone can say yeah cool it's good, why not make better use of these comment boxes??!? Sometimes it not clear, because he stutters when explaining things which leads to the wrong information being conveyed!
@No1Melman These tutorials are amazing, quite frankly it seems as though you're on the rag and looking for things to criticize, as opposed to finding true faults. Maybe you should come back when your cunts not bleeding?
hey there! i love your tutorials, they are really helpful..
i was just wondering, i use rewire in various programs, like cubase etc.. but in cubase i get a lot of latency, have you any idea how to improve that as it is effecting the overall song and the creation of the song?
I have had loads of trouble with latency, upgrading to a better computer and better soundcard helped somewhat, but it's still there.
On Sonar (what I rewire with), changing the buffering settings in audio options is the only thing that makes much of a difference, but sometimes that means the track won't be able to play at all!
If you play around with the cubase equivalent, you might be able to speed things up a bit though ^_^
Even though you make you own patches etc i just think all your songs after these tutorials sound so generic to their genre. Theyre like the most mainstream, cheesy form of each genre youve approached, just seem to have no individuality about them!
He doesn't make "generic" sounding music though, if you've ever listened to YAWA then you'd see that. With these tutorials he's giving you the basics so that you can take what you've learned and make better music.

Sincerely, I am not big fan of Trance, but as a user of Reason watched all tuturiais and I really enjoyed the job done.
Congratulations, greetings from Portugal

I was using Subtractor for pretty much everything until I went through your 7 day and realized just how powerful Thor is. Excellent tutorials dude, picked up a lot of tips from them!
bbraun01 2 years ago
man, you're doing great tutorials!!

Isn't it amazing how inventive people are, when it comes to the final song and all people can post back is an imatation of what they have learnt

In reply to the now removed comment, copying is what small children do, talented people invent and create some new ontop of the tutorial base
No1Melman 2 years ago
Beginners and more advanced producers are welcome to post their productions as responses, whether they're just starting out by copying to get the hang of it or if they choose to be a bit more creative.
Perhaps you'd like to post your trance song as an example of a more inventive interpretation? :D

No1Melman 2 years ago
I think he's fine.... Easy to understand and clear with instructions. And with regard to the comment about people posting 'copied work' of course it's going to sound a bit copied, it's work from a tutorial, lol. Lighten up for gawds sake!
RizlaWizard 2 years ago 20
Jst bcos I posting critism doesn't mean I'm all hyped up, in fact I'm rather the opposite, anyone can say yeah cool it's good, why not make better use of these comment boxes??!? Sometimes it not clear, because he stutters when explaining things which leads to the wrong information being conveyed!

@No1Melman These tutorials are amazing, quite frankly it seems as though you're on the rag and looking for things to criticize, as opposed to finding true faults. Maybe you should come back when your cunts not bleeding?

hey there! i love your tutorials, they are really helpful..
i was just wondering, i use rewire in various programs, like cubase etc.. but in cubase i get a lot of latency, have you any idea how to improve that as it is effecting the overall song and the creation of the song?
thanks x
sammuueellll 2 years ago
I have had loads of trouble with latency, upgrading to a better computer and better soundcard helped somewhat, but it's still there.
On Sonar (what I rewire with), changing the buffering settings in audio options is the only thing that makes much of a difference, but sometimes that means the track won't be able to play at all!
If you play around with the cubase equivalent, you might be able to speed things up a bit though ^_^
wwwboyinabandcom 2 years ago
aaah ok, yeah i shall try that.. thanks for the help!!
:D
sammuueellll 2 years ago
definitely you need to change audio buffer.
usually when you record you need it at least at 512, but you could possibly reduce it to 128.
In these cases, soundcards can really make the difference.
Anyway if you have everything recorded and just need to mix it, the buffer can stay at 1024 or even at bigger value to save some cpu.
latency is one of the main difference between a user soundcard and a pro one.
banzostrummer 2 years ago
@sammuueellll get ASIO4ALL its an amazing ASIO audio driver which reduces latency to next ot nothing!!
jon6123 1 year ago
@jon6123 - i have ASIO4ALL but it doesn't seem to recognise my audio interface? do you know why this might be?

Sweet! Thanks heaps for the tutorials!

Even though you make you own patches etc i just think all your songs after these tutorials sound so generic to their genre. Theyre like the most mainstream, cheesy form of each genre youve approached, just seem to have no individuality about them!
hazzhall88 2 years ago
He doesn't make "generic" sounding music though, if you've ever listened to YAWA then you'd see that. With these tutorials he's giving you the basics so that you can take what you've learned and make better music.
