  • video response added!!!

  • check out my trance in the video response :)

  • thts pretty decent like

chek out my trance mix mc space bound

  • Thanks dave for all the tutorials!

  • I really love the way you move your mouse cursor : )

  • Thanks for all your tutorials Dave, have learned loads.

  • Mouse dance XD

  • Thats a catchy tune!

  • This sounds like 1992 Trance...it's 2011 WAKE UP!!!

  • @surfing4life ffs man can u create dnb? can u create dubstep? can u create house? can u create hip hop? i can so i appreciate what daves doing so what if it sounds like 1992 trance thats his take and his sound. He doesnt say im going to teach u how to make the trance sound of 2011 but trance is trance so he achieved what he set out to do. You just made yourself look propa stooooooooooooooooopid

  • @surfing4life paul was so right about that new trance, this is better d:

  • @surfing4life You must actually be retarded. Regardless of whether this tune was made in '92 or 2011, it'd still be a fucking excellent song. THUS, your point is moot.

  • @surfing4life You're an idiot...

  • @bethoishorse Moron (;

On a sidenote, this song is epic!

  • nice tutorial, pretty damn cheesy trance though1!

  • Um is there any way to watch the freqs of the instruments in Reason or you have to use your ears?

  • @Distorsted yes. buy another daw that can run vsts. download span frequency analyzer by voxengo(free). run reason rewired from within the daw. FL studio has a basic version that is mad cheap, i dont remember how much but less than $100. its a useless piece of shit on its own but running reason from within it extends what you can do, especially when it comes to analysis.

personally i always run reason from within FL or pro tools.

  • @bethoishorse also dave mentioned in his propellerhead ustream interview that he usually runs reason rewired in sonar.

the propellerhead guy hosting the webcast clearly didn't like him bringing up the competition, it was awkard and funny

  • @bethoishorse whoa u can respond to urself !! haha

    neato burrito

  • @bethoishorse so how u been?

  • You should do a Happy Hardcore Tutorial :D

  • @TehBlueStar i save dave the hassle do what he done here speed up tempo to 180 and maybe change a few synth sounds tutorial done ;)

  • Doesnt sound like mainstream trance, But i would prefer this over most trance anyday :D

  • @Supersonicboom7 really? this sounds like mainstream trance to me. Then again I am stuck in the late 90's....

  • I've only watched one of your trance tuts and learned alot of stuff! Thanks!

  • tiesto ! love it ahahah

  • soundcloud (dot) com /the-shag-tycoons/trance

Heres mine! Thank you so much for doing these tutorials!

Btw, was there a way to get the samples to stop repeating without turning down the length? Thank you.

  • I must say u are GREAT and making A SOUND, but sadly the actually writing of the riffs and chords weren't the best ever. but rly nice man! it turned on alot of lights in my head for actual sound construction which is rly hard to find on youtube :)

  • This song is simply epic <3

  • song is nice, but sorry to say, frequencies sound sucked out and song is very muddy.

  • @YoonIsaac because its on youtube

  • I just posted my reposnse. It's called "Transponder". Read the comments before listening or commenting. Thanks! ~Meta

  • This tutorial is amazing. Thank you for not only being thorough in your explanations but also being entertaining. It's hard to do both but you did it. Great job man!

  • @kyleahlstrom yeah, he's way better at this that hydlide24, who's just an arrogant twat, poor at explaining things and barely understandable through his thick accent

  • It's pretty cool. good stuff Dave

  • I dislike this genera of music (too gay clubbish for me) but it has great aspects to steal and put in my bag of tricks. Another Great Tutorial! Don't ever stop making them. My reason knowledge and overall song composition knowledge has grown exponentially since I started using your tutorials, and I've been doing this for years.

  • @bluntmasterflash

    Same here!

  • can reason give you a written score of your music on manuscript ?

  • @SpaceAgentMusic not sure about that one, but i know a program called logic 8 pro can

  • @SpaceAgentMusic No, but cubase can.

  • @SpaceAgentMusic Fl Studio can. :P

  • @SpaceAgentMusic if you plug it into protools 8 LE I know for a fact you can, but you have to import the midi information

  • I love the melody! It kinda reminds me of the song " Jesus is just alright with me"

  • Couldn’t agree more about polystylism either – I’ll certainly be trying out the possibilities of combining trance elements with by beloved progressive metal and checking out your other tutorials to aid my understanding of electronic genres.

  • Brilliant tutorials, really clear and concise but at the same time allowing scope for some individual deviations too. The main reason I watched the series was to get a grasp on the production elements of trance but along the way I learnt much more than I’d expected to and all of it with some amusingly bizarre linguistic moments of all too rarely encountered intellectual humour.

  • I hear some tight trance tracks where the kick is pumping hard and some where you can barley hear the kick .... i guess if the kick hits when you put it solo in cubase it will hit ? When I mix a synth on top of the kick I find myself trying to keep kick hitting loud like it hits in Solo mode - this cuases me to bring down the synth to lower lvs and never feels right ( Even eq or compression ) Tried it all ... Could I send you a sample ?

  • thumbs up if you had your mouse dancing with his mouse :D

  • @NunoFigueira31 so right :))

  • This song takes me back to innercity 1999 and the days of Tiesto and Ferry Corsten !!!

  • thumbs up if you like the dancing mouse pointer

  • super 90s

  • Oh wow this is awesome!

  • Thanks for the effort that you really take time and show us and share you're tricks etc :) Seriously thanks man, I'd love to make a tutorial with you 1 day or co-lab =) Cheer up since, what you are doing is really valuable and people pay alot of money to learn this lol, and we got it all up here for free. Amazing isn't it? :)

  • I didn't used to like trance.

    Now I like trance.

  • god damn.. maaaan this is SICK!!! POWER OF REASON , POWER OF BOY IN DA BAND ;DDD THUMBS UP!!!

  • sick tune

  • nice song but the recording is even better my quality sucks

    whats ur secret

  • sounds like a old track

  • "the more genres you attempt to make, the more techniques you will learn"

thats probably the greatest advice this great man has ever given you

  • @DeadHeroDubstep so fking true ! :)

  • @DeadHeroDubstep no the best one ive heard is "start speaking in french, using questionable religious imagery in your album covers and you will not find anyone who can resist dancing to your new dirty pumping electro bassline

  • @DeadHeroDubstep Totally agree. Every new genre i try out, my mixes seem to get much better.

  • I think I just might get Reason because of this tutorial. Even if I don't get Reason, I still learned a heck of a lot. Thank you for putting the time and effort into making it!

  • Hey man, Great track.

    what program do you use?

  • @0lemannen he uses reason 4

  • @DjNeskar thanks :)

  • you honestly have a gift, i'm really glad i found you on here

  • is there a place to download / buy this song?

  • great tutorial

    youtube.com/watch?v=lVLRG8dFiMk

  • also its really hard to make a song nowadays that sound completely original

  • why would anyone watch this in order to talk shit he is helping is out

  • Just as an update. Reason 5 arrived today and after loading the 7 day trance I'd made of this song the PC breezed it! Well done the 'Propellerheads' I can dance my mouse all over the screen and edit on the fly. This is such a good programme I've had them all including the updates from 1 through to 5.

  • Clear and concize. (lol) I've learned a lot including the fact that I need a new PC it gave up the ghost on the last arrangement. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge Dave.

  • thanks for all the tutorials, you don't know how much I learned :)

  • huhu happy mouse pointer :)

    Cheers great job

  • honestly, this is incredible. like Tiesto level.

Thankyou so much for posting these, youve allowed me to enjoy the feeling of creating my own music.

Good luck in everything you do!

  • that sounds so rubbish, how can you teach when you dont know what the hell your doing

  • 10x man

  • give me your brain dave

  • Great JOB!!!!!!!!! :-D

  • This and the liquid dnb track you did are the sickest songs on youtube

  • Haha i failed so bad at this song..

  • This set of tutorials is beautiful and very comprehensive, it explains in detail all phases of creating a trance song with hints that the result sounds "pro" ... Although I am far from being bilingual (I'm french) it will help me enormously to improve my Reason skills, thank you :)

  • Hey Man... i'm recently getting into mastering my tracks. Ive been reading Bob Katz Mastering book. Any other recommendations for me?

Perhaps I could add u on msn or something like this for some tips tricks etc? Ive been producing for years, but never really mastered until recently as taking things more seriously.

  • Thanks for the tutorials. I don't use Reason but you give some good advice on programming synths and arrangement. I also like your mixing technique.

  • Bloody hell... I've been listening to loads of your tutorials and then you said at 5.23 your band is You And What Army. I remember seeing you at the Kasbah in Coventry when I went there randomly for a night out and thought you were great and shook your hand. I somehow feel this is a small world moment...

  • longer intro maybe??? but awesome track still XD

  • do you attend any music universities or take classes or was this just all years of toying around with reason?

  • I raise my glass today to you sir boy in a band! If you havent been knighted already then maybe you should be. Ive never been able make my drums sound as crisp and well engineered before. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and allowing others to enhance thier creativity.

  • These literally have been the best youtube tutorials i have seen! Can you make a tutorial for pop/rnb songs like Usher or Justin Bieber? 10 Stars!

  • Lololllooollloooollllllll OWNAGE man you are sick :D

  • fine track. i would have the the sum of the synths made a little bit more quiet or compressed again in the sum, but that's a questin of everyone's own taste.

  • haha dancing mouse on the screen!!!

  • Dave, I would like some one to one tutorials, i've sent a couple of emails but I guess you're busy with the latest part with you're band performing those festivals, let me know if you still are doing them.

  • wtf??? this shit is trance? songs like a MIDI!!! JAJAJA

  • great tutorials!! its the help a beginner needs to get the feeling on what means to produce music and what parts/components is it made off. Tks

I guess my next issue is on how to produce nice midi stuff! As for the rest, I think its about to get vibes that feel like your stuff and get some personality to the tracks to get on the road

  • Lol, i love how your mouse dances with the song.

  • i think its a nice arrangment but a lot is left out theres no breaks or fills in the percussion and the main melody is only 2 bars you just kept repeating over and over i think an 8 or 16 bar melody would be more uplifting. other than that its a nice arrangment for someone just starting out.

  • very awesome! you've done one of my favorite genres proud.

Question about Reason though, does it require a really good sound card to view the songs in the quality and play them as you do? I guess my real question is can you record a high quality version without having it rendered live?

  • Ok made a responce :P

  • Wow, you're my hero man. This is frickin' fantastic. Thank you for sharing everything, Dave! When I make some money, I'll support your cause.

  • I just love how the mouse pointer goes crazy on the buildups XD

  • thank you dave.. amazing all you've done...

  • it would be nice if you explained how to make a typical trance piano

  • dude i like ur accent

  • nice tutorial for this song but i have to say the song is kind of a basic one , call me old fashioned but i prefer more melodic melodies not just a few bars melodies.

anyhow im not taking away your talents im sure someone could use your tutorials for there own trance song with there own synths and elements.

  • Awesome

  • Mastering aside, the track is actually pretty cool.

  • good tune :) but the hip hop tutorial was the best, you should make a grime tutorial OMG ! i would love to see that !!!

  • Dude, this is sick! Makes me feel like I have aids

  • hey there, i was just wondering if it's too late to post a video response to this video ? and also, my work looks a bit like yours lol (but not exactly hopefully), anyway i hope to hear from you, or anyone who has the info! thanks...

  • awesome

  • Hey BiaB, I've checked out your 7 day series and I've found them fairly helpful. Most of the tricks I already knew but its always small things that you learn from others that help you out even more. Thanks for sharing your techniques!

Check out my video response too if you have time! :)

Aka.Dream - Forgotten by You (Extended Mix)

attached there is an Demo-Track I made after watching your "Trance-Tutorial".

It's a bit off Trance :-)) just to show people what else they can do with this tutorial.

  • Cursor Dance!!! +1

learned al lot from this tutorial, big thx

  • Cursor Dance!!!

  • been using reason since #2 and still have not gotten to this level. ugh what to do for that type of inspiration?,.....

  • Sincerely, I am not big fan of Trance, but as a user of Reason watched all tuturiais and I really enjoyed the job done.

    Congratulations, greetings from Portugal

  • I was using Subtractor for pretty much everything until I went through your 7 day and realized just how powerful Thor is. Excellent tutorials dude, picked up a lot of tips from them!

  • man, you're doing great tutorials!! I use reason for hmm... about 4 years...since our band split up.

i first started with hip hop, then ambient/experimental and know progressive psy/ goa trance.

i would say i know reason very good, but its always an inspiration to view your clips.

..and you're such a thor-freak (yes its real great) ..what about a tutorial how to use all the ins and out on the back??? i used to run audiosamples through thor to use the filters but i failed...

  • Isn't it amazing how inventive people are, when it comes to the final song and all people can post back is an imatation of what they have learnt

  • Comment removed

  • Beginners and more advanced producers are welcome to post their productions as responses, whether they're just starting out by copying to get the hang of it or if they choose to be a bit more creative.

Perhaps you'd like to post your trance song as an example of a more inventive interpretation? :D

  • I think he's fine.... Easy to understand and clear with instructions. And with regard to the comment about people posting 'copied work' of course it's going to sound a bit copied, it's work from a tutorial, lol. Lighten up for gawds sake!

  • Jst bcos I posting critism doesn't mean I'm all hyped up, in fact I'm rather the opposite, anyone can say yeah cool it's good, why not make better use of these comment boxes??!? Sometimes it not clear, because he stutters when explaining things which leads to the wrong information being conveyed!

  • Wat?

  • @No1Melman These tutorials are amazing, quite frankly it seems as though you're on the rag and looking for things to criticize, as opposed to finding true faults. Maybe you should come back when your cunts not bleeding?

  • Love your tutorials! Sounds great! And love how you make the cursor dance to the music when you play it back!!! lol

  • that's mouse-banging :D

  • I didn't expect so much power in this song. You took it to the next level I gues

  • you, sir, are a complete legend. youre making my music technology A level so much easier!

  • im not to much into trance but this kicks ass! much respect!

  • haha i waited along time to see such a mouse dance that Brang tears to my eyes through the relation to those epic synths

  • hey there! i love your tutorials, they are really helpful..

i was just wondering, i use rewire in various programs, like cubase etc.. but in cubase i get a lot of latency, have you any idea how to improve that as it is effecting the overall song and the creation of the song?

    thanks x

  • I have had loads of trouble with latency, upgrading to a better computer and better soundcard helped somewhat, but it's still there.

On Sonar (what I rewire with), changing the buffering settings in audio options is the only thing that makes much of a difference, but sometimes that means the track won't be able to play at all!

If you play around with the cubase equivalent, you might be able to speed things up a bit though ^_^

  • aaah ok, yeah i shall try that.. thanks for the help!!

    :D

  • definitely you need to change audio buffer.

usually when you record you need it at least at 512, but you could possibly reduce it to 128.

In these cases, soundcards can really make the difference.

Anyway if you have everything recorded and just need to mix it, the buffer can stay at 1024 or even at bigger value to save some cpu.

latency is one of the main difference between a user soundcard and a pro one.

  • @sammuueellll get ASIO4ALL its an amazing ASIO audio driver which reduces latency to next ot nothing!!

  • @jon6123 - i have ASIO4ALL but it doesn't seem to recognise my audio interface? do you know why this might be?

  • Sweet! Thanks heaps for the tutorials!

  • Even though you make you own patches etc i just think all your songs after these tutorials sound so generic to their genre. Theyre like the most mainstream, cheesy form of each genre youve approached, just seem to have no individuality about them!

  • He doesn't make "generic" sounding music though, if you've ever listened to YAWA then you'd see that. With these tutorials he's giving you the basics so that you can take what you've learned and make better music.
