Resonator type guitars do have a banjo like quality to them and particularly as he obviously has the guitar in an open tuning like some banjo tunings. The thing that gives the game away as not being a banjo is when we hear the lower strings

If I close my eyes, I'd swear it was a banjo playing. Certainly a different version from the David Bromberg does.
