@painlessissuicide Yep but over the years, different versions of the ending have been made - there's some endings where only one of the lovers die, there's endings where the spell is not broken and Siegfried and Odette are parted forever when Odette returns to the lake as a swan and then there are the happy endings. But yes, in the original, they both die when they jump into the lake, but it's not all sad cos they are united forever in the afterlife.
@painlessissuicide Well you know... that's fairy tales for you and Swan Lake is a fairy tale; its original ending is both sad and happy because the only way for Siegfried and Odette is if they die and they do die, but happiness does come out of it because they are united for eternity in Heaven. You know, a little bit like The Little Mermaid; it's both sad and happy because she loses her prince and she dies, but she will get her human soul and enter Heaven one day.
i prefer the tragic ending to be honest, but this was beautifully danced. But i really feel making this a happy ending is like making romeo and juliet a happy ending! thanks for posting this however, their technique was beautiful
@mimatastic The original ending from 1877 was supposed to be a happy one.. Then, after Tchaikovsky's death, his brother decided to change the ending into a tragic one- that was in 1895 and ever since ''Swan Lake'' has been a tragic story..
@margaritanoir Oh really? that's interesting! The finale sounds so tragic despite that though doesn't it, although I suppose I am bound to think that because I am utterly in love with the sad ending :) I think it's far more beautiful as a sad ending, his brother was right. Maybe Tchaikovsky was too close to the project :p
aren't Odette and Sigried supposed to kill themselves?

@mimatastic I heard that for political reasons they had to make the ending happy but they've changed it back now :)
