The truth of the matter is that this video was shot in 1995. Since then, Santa Monica Airport has installed a jet-blast wall.
But what is funny about this video? The airport was there first! That means this bitter couple moved to this house, knowing that they would be living at the end of a runway and in exchange, the price of the house would be heavily discounted.
15 years later, these are the same idiots fighting to close the airport. Go figure.
People need to stop complaining about aircraft noise at SMO. The airport dates back to the early 1920, in the 50's and 60's Santa Monica airport recorded an average of 975 operations per day and in the early 60's the first civilian jets started coming to Santa Monica. Most people living close to the runway moved there way after the airport expanded and became busier, for everyone else who's been living near SMO for 50+ years, well I am very sorry for the inconvenience!!!
This video shows that it is from 1995. The SMO rules have changed a lot in 15 years. I believe the the type plane shown taking off is no longer allowed to operate into or out of SMO because of higher noise restrictions that were put in place a while ago (Stage II ban, for those who are interested). Much has improved since then. Every so often a new operational rule comes out regarding this airport, and each operator complies with the new rule as they should. Like it or not the airport exists.
I agree with you on the dumbass who bought a house 300 feet from a damn airport runway, but I must say that the airport might not have initially been built for jets or to support jets and probably only smaller aircraft, so they might have had the house before these jets were allowed to come in?? If not, then yea, these people were straight dumbasses and got what was coming to them. Maybe if they were smart they moved by now since it was 1996. The jet traffic at Santa Monica got worse it seems.
Big jets did not used to use this airport, the houses were these LONG before the jets were there. Used to be for small planes only. So all those people who say "you knew there was an airport there" are missing the point.
No one choses to have giant private jets fly over their homes, idling on the runway spewing jet fumes. There is a huge difference between the small private aircraft that flew in and out of the airport when it was first constructed compared with the giant private jets that utilize the airport today.
Im a Pilot out of Santa Monica, and I think you guys should stop the BS... I only see one problem here, and They are doing there run ups at the rock area... thats a different issue you need to address... Lets compromise. Flight is a Wonderful Reason, I bought my house near LAX just because I love Airplanes... if you dont like it, then maybe you should have never moved there. End of Story!
Even worse is the totally corrupt City of Santa Monica and their 'airport commission' which has absolutely NO pilot representation. The city knows they will never close the airport because of the economic and social benefit to the community and yet they continue to string the group along because they are so affraid of losing votes. There is NO real leadership on the council.
The science they claim is false. The leader of the group Martin even claims that jet pollution gave his cat cancer. I would love to see the evidence he has on that. They have lost at every attempt to close the airport. The video is also deceiving in the fact that currently jet's like the one shown are no longer permitted at the airport (as are many larger jets), sound and jet blast walls have been installed, run ups are not done at the end of the runway, etc. etc...

The Santa Monica Airport has been there since the Golden Age of Aviation. YOU CHOSE to move into an area adjacent to the airport. You don't realize the revenue brought to your city as a result of this airport (Landing Fees, Fuel Taxes Etc.) Not to mention Jobs for the Community. Feel free to come to the Airport and pay for a ride in a Cessna and you'll enjoy having a small community Airport like this one in your neighborhood.
Did you folks knew there was an airport there with its jets when you moved in? I was raised in Sunset Park starting in 1960 and are there today. We fought the city when the jets first started arriving and when they were noisier and dirtier than they are now. Our fight was different than yours in that you, knowing jets used the airport, made the choice to buy or rent where you did.
An aircraft takeoff contaminates an area that is 12 miles long! Kids living within get a lifetime worth of hazardous and toxic pollution in their first 3 years!
EPA states that airports emit as much and varied pollution as "mini-cities"; but the are not regulated.
A study shows that Boston Logan airport's AIRCRAFT emit 2x as much Benzene, as 3 states worth of stationary polluters.
This is disgusting! Every mother should raise her voice in anger!
You bought the home knowing the airport was there, idiots.
